First time we have been to this hotel having been to a sister hotel several times before. Definitely worth the change, The decor and size of the rooms was similar to the other hotel. However the rest of the hotel was definitely superior. It is a smaller hotel and therefore quieter. the communal areas are excellent as is the area around the three pools - there was always plenty of sunbeds available at all times of day. Food excellent both in variety and quality. Best asset of the hotel is the staff - without exception they were friendly approachable and very helpful. Evening entertainment suited us as we do not want a roaring nightlife, it was easy listening background music most nights. Would thoroughly recommend hotel to anyone wanting a peaceful, relaxing, quality holiday.

My friend and I booked the Athena Royal based on previous recommendations on Tripadvisor. We were not to be disappointed. This resort was absolutely perfect for what we wanted, a chill out, no children, beach/pool holiday where we could forget about our stressful lives back home and top up on lots of Vitamin D.

The Hotel grounds and pools are quite vast, so there's no fear of being too close to other sun loungers, and there was never a problem getting a sunbed, although there were quite a few people who still put their towels on at mad o'clock in the morning ! why ??

The resort is spotlessly clean, the rooms have everything you need and sheets & towels were plentiful and replenished regularly. The basic twin rooms were adequate for us as we had a room each for single occupancy, may feel a little small if 2 shared (but we weren't there to stay in the room).

Food was lovely and you'd never be bored with the choices (even if there for 2 weeks), the tenderloin steak in the a la carte restaurant was superb. Breakfast choices were probably the most i've ever seen in any restaurant (that includes many of the 5* ones in Dubai). BTW if you've only booked B&B, it's well worth upgrading to the all inclusive package as it includes most branded spirits, and nice prosecco/sparking wines.

The staff in the resort are probably one of the best assets, many had wife's, husbands working there too, and it have a very friendly, welcoming feel.

The Spa was very nice, and not overly priced.

I'll certainly be returning to the Athena Royal in the future.

We had booked in January for a wedding that was taking place in the Athena Beach hotel in September. On arrival we were told that due to overbooking we were being moved to the Athena Royal Beach instead.

We were told we were being upgraded as compensation, so we didn't complain too much. On arrival however, we were told that no, we WEREN'T being upgraded. Apparently it was the hotel itself that was considered an upgrade - but as they are both rated 4 star I don't see how it can be considered an upgrade. We later found out that another guest in the same situation WAS given an upgrade, so there isn't exactly continuity in the customer service.

The front desk clerk, Maria, was rude and unhelpful. She was not sympathetic to our discomfort and didn't seem to care in the slightest. This attitude of hers continued throughout our stay. On the other hand, there were other front desk staff who were very nice, so it's not a problem with all the staff.

The hotel itself is very dated and decorated like it was still the seventies. There is a lot of wear and tear on the fixtures and fittings and there was an overall feeling of it being old and tired. It was clean, however. Also, it's a bit cheeky to call it the 'Athena Royal Beach' hotel - there's barely a beach at all, and what there is is so rocky you need to walk out on a floating jetty to get to the sea safely. There are no children allowed in the hotel - perhaps this contributed to the lack of atmosphere. The bars and public areas seemed deserted. Also, although me and my boyfriend are in our mid thirties we were definitely the youngest people there.

The food was quite good. Breakfasts were very varied, with hot items cooked fresh, and hot and cold buffet selections. We only ate there one night, but the dinner was nice too, a wide selection and four courses available. The service wasn't great - some of the waiters were quite rude and we had to wait a very long time for our drink orders. We did try to book into one of the a la carte restaurants but didn't manage it because the wonderful Maria told us we needed 24 hours notice (even though we saw the restaurant that night and it was half empty). Turns out this was a blessing in disguise once we looked at the menu - prawn cocktail as a starter and lemon pie for dessert for 43 Euros? It's not just the décor that is stuck in the seventies.

Overall, a little extra customer service could have made this a much nicer stay. As it was, the sterile atmosphere and unwelcoming attitude of some of the staff means we won't be going back. I'd try other hotels before booking at this one - there's certainly a lot of choice in this area.

Our first time at this hotel. It was really excellent, always clean, all the staff were always, pleasant, friendly, efficient and could not do enough. The food could not be faulted, we are veterans of hotel stays and this one of the best, there was something for everyone. There was not need to use the a'la carte as the buffet was excellent. The location is ideal and the pool and beach areas are kept in immaculate condition. The rooms were very good but not lavish. The gym was very good and well maintained, it could do with one or two more upright bikes and another cross trainer. The beach is not the best and access to the sea is difficult for weaker swimmers, however there is a pontoon into the deeper water. One downside is that WiFi is not free and it is expensive,7Euros for 2 hours, in bars down the road it's free!! The manager was very hands on and approachable. I hope the hotel chain can see the advantage of free WiFi. We will return.

Well, what can be written about a Hotel that was awarded Trip Advisor's Best Hotel 2013! This establishment has retained and maintained the high standards it continues to set itself. This adult only resort is simply superb. There is no need to get up at the crack of dawn to fight off the 'bed brigade' as it simply doesn't happen - a leisurely rise at 7 am place your towels out at 07:40 followed by a wonderful breakfast to start your hectic day!! Due to the Constantinou Bros ethos of concentrating on the 'family', drinks in the Hotel are very reasonable - happt hour 6-7pm. The shop within the hotel is also cheaper than the local supermarket for water and canned beer! Again, this in my opinion is down the to hotel's policy of putting families first. Already booked for next year - cannot wait.

Just returned from stay at Athena Royal for our honeymoon. It was a gorgeous hotel and on our arrival there were balloons on the door and a bottle of champagne waiting fur us! I did feel the room was basic for the money we paid (may have felt this more as we did not have sea view) but the rest jog the hotel makes up for it as it really is beautiful.

The food is amazing - especially in the a la carte restaurant. The staff can't do enough for you and it is them who make the hotel so special. The entertainment is not great however a few nights a week they hold entertainment out by the pool and this was always really good - the BBQ night in particular is brilliant with such an amazing atmosphere.

We are a young couple (aged 30/33) and we did feel the youngest there . It is mainly older couples who tend to use this hotel but this was not at all a problem and actually meant that it was all nice, decent people there.

Paphos as an area is pretty similar to any tourist spot abroad - mainly filled with restaurants and gift shops etc. the thing that makes paphos stand out though is the Cypriot people who seem genuinely lovely.

If you are thinking if booking the Athena Royal you won't be disappointed!!
