Constantinou Bros Athena Royal Beach Hotel
Ranked #16 of 85 Hotels in Paphos
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 17, 2013

We booked this hotel because we wanted a couples-only holiday and the Athena Royal didn't disappoint.

The hotel is conveniently situated a nice 40min coastal stroll from Pafos harbour and surrounded by bars of varying quality (see our other reviews), and the bus stop is a 3min walk from the hotel door, which can take you to Kato Pafos (611) or the airport (612) for €1.50 or €2.50 after 11pm.

During our stay we took advantage of most of the facilities so will break down our stay.

ROOM
We had a standard side-view room. We specifically asked for a double but had a twin allocated on arrival which was swiftly rearranged for us. The bed was comfortable and plenty of pillows are available in the room. Rooms come with a fridge for you to use as you see fit, a good sized bathroom with two shower settings, and a tv with BBC News and G.o.l.d amongst others which suited us fine. Aircon gets the rooms lovely and cool or lower, and fast, and there is a key-operated safe. Toiletries are not automatically replaced as you use them, but more can easily be obtained from reception. There is a nespresso machine in the room but you only get two free pods for your whole stay (we very nearly bought cafepod capsules before we left but forgot - these would have worked fine as they don't use authentic nespresso pods either!)
The balcony view was as described and there was plenty of room out there for drying swimsuits etc.
Our room had a plug socket outside it which meant the cleaners hoovered especially enthusiastically at the sight of our 'do not disturb' sign.

RESTAURANTS
We stayed on a B&B basis and felt that the upgrade options available were poor value. You can get unlimited drinks for about €58 per couple per day but have to purchase at least 4 days in a week, and that would be a lot of booze even by our standards! The meal options were uninspiring and more expensive for a three-course than the best meze meals we had at nearby restaurants during our stay. However, breakfast options were plentiful - from fry-up to fresh fruit, with lots of traditional Cypriot items and full continental buffet. Buck's Fizz was a nice treat, made-to-order omelettes were just right, as were poached eggs. There were lots of lunch-style items and we always took a large empty handbag. Just sayin....
Happy hour is between 6 and 7pm and half price cocktails at this time are served with roasted nuts and canapés. We always escaped the evening entertainment, although my partner did win table tennis one day, earning a free half a pint from the poolside bar (subject to Suzanne on reception checking this with the 'animations' staff...)

ENTERTAINMENT
There is a mini-golf on site which was good fun and usually unused, a floating jetty into the sea which is precarious and certainly not for anyone with mobility or balance issues but bypassed the rocky beach to the sea, where plenty of fish could be spotted with a snorkel and mask.

We used the gym which looks out onto the main pools - so be prepared to be ogled in disbelief for exercising on holiday - and equipment is in good order. It did seem as though they interacted a little, so pausing the treadmill affected the cross trainer, and it can get a little too warm in there despite aircon, which we suspect needed to be adjusted down.

The 'cinema' screen is about 42inch and films are the sort you might catch on a flight. There is a book repository, handy for offloading heavy novels on checkout day, and the games in the games room, such as pool, all require payment. There is no free wifi at all, anywhere in the hotel, they are missing an opportunity to increase footfall in the bar (for example) this way as you only have to go over the road to find a bar with free wifi happy to let you sit there for hours with a diet coke.

POOLS AND BEACH
No worries about getting a pair of sunloungers as there are always plenty - unless you're very particular about location. There are cabanas for the use of premium-rate guests which were empty almost all of the time. To hire them would cost €40 a day, which we thought steep; if the cost was lower they'd definitely get more use. The pool is 'closed' from about 6pm in high summer, a shame as this is perfect time for snow whites to have a safe dip. The indoor pool is a nice alternative, although woe betide anyone who actually uses it to swim in, as this makes the floor wet which very obviously exasperated the mumbling cleaner chasing round the pool while we were in it. We assumed she was just commenting on our swim technique, all in Greek of course!

Staff range from lovely, such as Josh, to the downright mental - no names, you'll just know. They are all ready to help, which is almost a shame as the general feeling is that hotel policy is to be as tight as possible with guests without it slapping you round the face.

The hotel guests, in the main, seem to use the hotel for their very private break spent exclusively slumped on a sunlounger completing the sudoku. Be warned, conversation above muted levels will be frowned upon, laughter in the pool regarded as downright horseplay. We relaxed lots but also explored, and reception staff told us in awe that we were basically dirty stopouts.

We enjoyed our stay, and the hotel was lovely, but it could so easily blow you away, and at the moment it's just shy of the mark.

Thank goodness for wonderful staff.

Room Tip: Twin rooms are converted to doubles efficiently and easily on request.

I have read other peoples reviews and rather than reiterate what has already been said, I can only add that this is one of the best hotels we have ever been to. I thought having seen the bowls lawns that it would be full of elderly people, but not so. There is a mixutre of all ages. We went as a couple to this adult only hotel the last 2 weeks of July and we found it so calm and relaxing with no kids running round and shouting. Likewise the pool is very inviting with no children or lios. We stayed all inclusive and was very glad we did. The food in the hotel is so varied and of such high quality. No problem with sun beds as there are plenty to choose from any time of the day. The staff are all very friendly and helpful, so it was a shame there was only one from the Olive Tree who seemed a bit 'offish.' The rooms are very comfortable and the beds have an extra soft mattress covering, an iron and ironing board, coffee/tea making facilities replenished every day and the bathroom toiletries are showel gel/shampoo, body lotion, cotton wool buds and sewing kit. The rain shower was a bonus. Its all the little things that the hotel management have thought of as well that make this a lovely holiday. I can't find any fault with this hotel at all and am looking forward to returning as soon as we can.

Room Tip: Sea view worth the money as is all inclusive.

Me and my girflriend (both 21) stayed here from 31st July - 13 August on the HB basis . We were extremely excited when reading all the reviews about the average age being 60+ as we just wanted to chill for 2 weeks - and that we did...

On arrival at 1am after a dreadful delayed flight from Thomas Cook (never again) we were greeted by a lovely reception man (later in the holiday we found out that all the girls and boys on reception were brilliant) who gave us our keys, brochures on paphos, the hotel etc. - nice touch. When we got to our room we were delighted to see the complementary wine + fruit, a free safe box, very good air conditioning system and a nice view. We didn't have a sea view room and I wouldn't recommend paying extra as our mountain view room was absolutely fine!

Breakfast - The choice at breakfast was mostly the same every day except a few tweaks but we just could not find a way to complain as all the food was to a great standard and all the chefs were eager to help and make added extras for you right in front of you. This was in the Oasis restaurant situated on beach and pool level where you had choice of inside or outside - either was lovely.

Dinner - This was my favourite part of the whole holiday as the food throughout the whole 2 weeks was exceptional and did not disappoint once!! Right from the beginning - greeted and seated by Sonia to our drinks order/service throughout was also very efficient (all the waitresses were brilliant and extremely nice). A great choice of food with a few themed nights especially the Thursday BBQ nights outside was a nice blend and added even more happiness to our stay. I was slightly worried at having to wear pants for the evening meals but this was put to bed when entering the restaurant as it was really air conditioned and it's changed my mind completely as I much prefer to wear pants as it looks much smarter and fits in to the hotel.

Entertainment - We didn't stay in the hotel much but when we did, we realised that it was not for our age group (20's) but we still enjoyed it - as did the rest of the people staying at the hotel which was good to see!

Pool area + Beach - The two outside pools were a decent size and were always very clean. The best thing about it all though was the calmness, sometimes we could literally of heard a pin drop - it was amazing! No screaming children, no lilos, no water polo, no nothing - priceless!!! Adult Only is the way forward - without a doubt. Plenty of sunbeds to go around and all but one day we got the ones we wanted, which was fine as we had a pretty good second choice - right in front of the sea with unbelievable views!

Paphos - We ventured down to the harbour quite a few times to have a look around and unfortunately didn't look enough as it was our last night when we found the really nice bars at the very end of the harbour. We also found BAR street - which needs to be avoided like the plague!

Surrounding bars + restaurants - There were plenty down the street (2 minute walk) ranging from French - Gabor, Italian - Cavallini's + Luigi's, African - The Lodge and also your standard pub grub type places - Fiesta, Pegasus and Crocodile. We had rave reviews for the French + Italian places but didn't manage to get there as the hotel food was literally that good! We went to Fiesta (which is literally opposite the hotel) quite a few times and enjoyed it - plenty of football on, decent food and free WiFi.

Negatives - There weren't many but I think it's fair to note some.

1. The main one was the fact that WiFI wasn't free, I feel that this isn't good enough as the amount of money that everybody has already paid - free wifi should really be provided (in my opinion)

2. There was a man present at breakfast and dinner most days (I'm unsure if he was the manager or not) anyway, he didn't really make us feel very welcome and it just didn't seem that he was happy that a young couple was there. I could be wrong but this is the way we felt.

3. Lastly, there was a very rude woman who worked only at lunch time at the Olive Tree Restaurant. There was quite a few couples we had met that had complained about her but we didn't go for lunch until our last day and witnessed it with our own eyes, it wasn't good to say the least.

Overall, it was by far the best place we have ever stayed and would love to return sometime in the future!

B&B accommodation taken from 28th July to 7th August 2013.
The hotel isn't officially 5-star but there's nothing more we could have asked for in terms of location, comfort, facilities, service and food. We had a sea-view room - worth paying the little extra just to hear the constant sound of waves lapping on the beach, have a bird's eye view of the entertainment below us by the pool and enjoy watching others going about their various leisure activities. Room was very comfortable with effective air-conditioning (outside temperature was above 25 degrees even in the night), a safe, an espresso machine (as well as the usual drink-making facilities) and a fridge. Bath robes and slippers are provided as standard although much too hot to ever wear the robe ! Plenty of clothes storage space. Two kinds of shower in the bathroom and fresh flannels and shower/bath gel provided every day. The roomy balcony had its own light.
We couldn't imagine a better breakfast provision, which took up about a third of the whole breakfast room - large variety of bread, cereals and juices with a very good selection of gluten-free items. Wide choice of fresh fruits, some tinned fruit and 4 choices of yogurt. 3 hot food counters, 2 of which had a chef cooking items to order, including eggs, excellent pancakes and omelettes. Drinks machines serving all combinations of tea, coffee and chocolate. And for those who like cake for breakfast, even a selection of pastries and doughnuts ! Plus two of the most delightful girls whose sole job was to welcome you to breakfast, find you a table either outside or inside and wish you a good day when you had feasted. Staff constantly cleared used cutlery and crockery from your table.
Very comfortable, cool and quiet places everywhere to relax and eat or drink.
Some really lovely touches : a bottle of wine and fresh fruit in the room when we arrived; a porter puts your luggage by the door in Reception when you've announced your departure time and carries it to the coach; a happy hour each day between 6.00m and 7.00pm when a wonderful varety of cocktails and other drinks are half-price and there's a bowl of nuts and plate of canopes provided free; clean towels for the beach or the pools are provided in the room every day; at various times someone wanders amongst the abundant sun-loungers dispensing ice-cold flannels and cold fruits on-a-stick (all free); there are 2 courtesy rooms to book for those like us who needed to stay in the hotel for several hours after our check-out time and wanted a shower before finally departing.
All of this is supported by a complement of the most smiley, cheerful, good-humoured staff - everyone you meet - Reception staff, dining room staff, chefs, site staff, bar staff - seems keen to greet you, offer a smile and be courteous even if there is a language barrier on occasions.
Wonderful place !

Room Tip: Go for a sea-view room on one of the higher floors

I stayed at the Athena Royal for two weeks on a B&B basis. The comments about breakfast being rushed are unfounded and the choice of breakfasts were amazing every sort of breakfast was covered I could have eaten something different every day and not have tried everything that was available! The hotel staff were smiley, friendly and were really helpful.

The room (3307) had an amazing sea view, exactly what we asked for when we booked. The air conditioing was really efficient (a must during July/August). Plenty of sunbeds to go round, never had a problem finding a good spot (although there were a handful of people who would get up at a ridiculous hour in the morning to put their towels on the sunbeds, talking about 6-6.30 am!

Happy hour brilliant! Cocktails brilliant! The entertainment a bit hit and miss and low key but if not to yr taste you can always go into paphos. We met some lovely people at the hotel and had some lovley evenings.

If I could I would love to come back!

Thank you to all the staff at the Athena Royal for making my holiday so relaxing and enjoyable

Just back from a week all inclusive at Athena Royal. After reading all the reviews here we went for mountain view (overlooking car park), would recommend paying the extra for sea view, proably would have used the balcony more. The room was excellent but there was noise from the Karaoke bar opposite. We had twin beds but were asked if we wanted them into a double, this was done as soon as we asked.
All staff are brilliant, friendly and welcoming, absolutely nothing was too much trouble.
The food was excellent, as we were all inclusive we ate most meals at the hotel and were never disappointed. We had the A La Carte twice and the food and choice was excellent. The service is a little slow, but this allowed each course to be enjoyed and not rushed.
The entertainment was ok, usually a duo singing in the bar, or local dancers came for the BBQ. Its enough for you to enjoy while having a drink in the bar. If you wanted more, there are lots of bars nearby.
We never had to search for a sun lounger, there are more sun loungers than people which stops people keeping towel out all day and hogging the loungers.
We paid for wifi and it is poor, this I would like to see included and of better quality.
Already looking at returning here next year, this hotel is well run and spotless.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a sea view you will not be disappointed
