We have just returned after a 4 week stay during November
We have travelled all over the world but have never seen an hotel that was better run than this one. All the staff were so pleasant and obliging. The restaurant became very crowded at peak times and I would recommend that you take advantage of the free table d'hôte service in the quieter A la carte restaurant . If you like dancing, the resident instructors, Pete and Chris can accommodate all levels in the huge ballroom in the evenings and lessons during the mornings. They are both very personable and work very hard to please and help everyone. It is very cheap and easy to use to local buses which stop outside the hotels. I would also suggest book your excursions in the shops outside which are less than half the cost of main tour operators

Room Tip: An east facing room gets sun most of the day

After a rather bad experience in Gran Canaria at a RIU hotel we spent a long time researching this one and weren't dissappointed. We arrived on a sunday and found that we were the only guests arriving at this hotel on that day, on checkin at reception we found out that we had been upgraded to a sea view room (I think because it was my Birthday whilst I was out there). The room was nice and clean, a reasonable size and we were welcomed to it by a fruit basket and small bottle of wine, which was replaced along with a happy birthday poster on my birthday (they did the same for other guests too). We were HB so had breakfasts and evening meals included, the food was generally good although a lot of the meat was quite dry but there we plenty of sauces to add some rehydration to them, we heard one guy complaining to the manager about the dryness of the meat so weren't the only ones to notice. I was a little dissapointed that there was no water included in the package, the hotel charge 1.70 for a small bottle. My girlfriend is a veggie so found it a little limited on some evenings but she managed to find something.

Plenty of sunloungers available, beach starts as grass, changes to sand (ish) and then rocks, there is a jetty provided to get you into the sea.

The bar on an evening is somewhat lacking in atmosphere, but generally ok (though as usual expensive outside of happy hour which is 1800-1900), entertainment is provided but the layout of the bar doesn't really suit and makes it difficult for the entertainers to engage with the audience. We were the youngest there (in our 30s) but found other guests friendly. We went next door a couple of times to the Athena Beach hotel which is much bigger and has a bit more atmosphere, but it was nice to be able to choose to take or leave that. The main passtime of most guests seemed to be bowling, though there was also a large dance group there too but we didn't see much of them.

Not sure if I would go back, but would recommend it to someone who hasn't been there already.

This is the 5th time staying at the Athena Royal Beach.
Last year we stayed during the half-board special offer period and found, like some other reviewers, that although the standard of the hotel was excellent, the quality of the clientelle was somewhat dubiuos. The "fags and tats" brigade as my husband referred to them were quite in evidence; loud, smelly, rude to staff and other guests. This time we went later in the year and found none of these problems.
We were upgraded to a mini-suite on arrival, a great surprise.
The bathrooms are beginning to show their age, although spotlessly clean and perfectly functional, they're showing signs of wear and tear.
All the common areas are also spotlessly clean and the staff can't be more helpful.
Only one drawback of going later in the year - the swimming pool was freezing.

Very good position with the hotel grounds stretching down to the beach. Food all buffet but all very good with amazing amount of choice, Drinks, waiter service , very good and prices reasonable. The main dining room is however a little shabby, the carpet is covered in stains. Mainly very helpfull service. Might go there again.

Room Tip: Only a sea view is worth having

The staff are truely 'at your service'. The room we had was on the small side but very well equipped with a air con, fridge, ironing board and safe. The sea view from the balcony was lovely. The hotel is spotlessly clean but Wifi has to be paid for.

Room Tip: Higher floor has better view.

Have just spent an enjoyable week at the Athena royal beach hotel. We arrived at the hotel around 12.20am and were greeted by a very friendly gentleman who sorted the checking in process very quickly. We were given a room on the 3rd floor facing the mountains. The room was clean, fresh fruit and a bottle of wine and water in the room on arrival. The only slight down side to this room was it did not get any direct sun at this time of the year.

We had gone on a bed and breakfast basis, which I must admit I was glad I had and not gone half board. The breakfast was a typical variety of cooked breakfast, cereals, bread, cold meats, cheese etc. the one thing I was pleased with was the fresh orange juice freshly squeezed. We ate on our last night at the hotel (buffet style, 16.50 euros per person) and must admit was not that pleased with it, there was less choice than for breakfast, and the meat (chicken and pork) was dry.

The staff were all very friendly and helpful. Willing to give advice on where to go out and about.

There was a bowls tournament on all this week, we did not know it was on but it added to the enjoyment of the holiday.

Would I go back to this hotel, yes I would but defiantly on a bed and breakfast basis only.

Just returned from 2 weeks at this gem. From the minute the coach pulled into the car park it wasn't difficult to imagine what the inside of the hotel was going to be like. The marble reception, lounge, bar and outside terraces are immaculate. Checking-in was quick and painless. We had only been in our room a few minutes when a friendly and helpful porter arrived with our bags. Whilst not luxurious our bedroom was a good size, very clean and well appointed. There are tea and coffee making facilities (replenished every day), use of the room fridge, bathrobes and beach towels, all of which are complimentary. Breakfast was brilliant, there was absolutely everything anyone could possibily wish for. We took dinner in the hotel on 2 or 3 occasions . Whilst it was just the usual buffet food there was always plenty of choice and it was always good quality. It's not something we would like to do for 14 nights but it was really good value for money. The tables in the dining room and on the dining terrace are all really well spaced. The grounds of the Athena Royal are one of its best features. They are well kept and very spacious with plenty of exceptionally well spaced sunbeds. No problem getting a bed anytime of the day. The other big plus, and why we chose this hotel, is that it is completely child free and it does not seem to appeal to the 20/30s. We like a good time but we've done the late night revelling and prefer a more laid back type of holiday these days. With the odd exception all of the hotel staff, reception, bar, dining room and cleaners were very friendly and helpful. If you want peace and quiet in lovely surroundings, and don't need loud entertainment you will enjoy this hotel. If you want to "party" all night it's not for you. This is our second stay at the Athena Royal and we will be returning.

Room Tip: We chose a sea view and it was, in our opinion, well worth the extra money. However had we not gone...
