“Great Hotel & Resort”
Reviewed September 14, 2008

We have just come back from Crown Resorts Horizon in Coral Bay and loved it. The hotel was very nice and clean. Rooms were clean and spacious. We were half board and the food at breakfast and dinner was excellent, especially at night we found the food to be very tasty and plenty of choice. Drinks with meals were a little expensive as we found out at the end of the week, but didn't have too much to drink in the hotel. You had to wait to be seated in the restaurant, either inside or out, but the waiters were friendly and seemed to recognise us after a couple of days. There was a different theme of meal every night and although sometimes the food was only warm instead of hot it was generally really tasty and made you go back for more. As it got busier through the week, they opened up both sides of the buffet with made it easier to get food. Always plenty of choice of salads, hot food, desserts, fruit, bread etc. Never experienced any problems with both going for food at same time, our table was never cleared while at the buffet. Hotel staff all seemed very friendly and helpful. Have read reviews on here where people are complaining about the food, but having stayed in 5* Hotels in Britain, we thought the food was just as good and can't understand what all the complaints are about. The pool was really nice and always seemed clean, although there were a few ants running around, but probably because of the trees around the pool, and you can't expect not to see any insects. There were people reserving beds from early in morning, but we never had a problem getting sunbeds around the pool, but mainly went later in the day, apart from the last day when we went around 9.30am and were still able to get a decent spot next to the pool. We went to Coral Bay beach once, which is only a short walk from the hotel, but as the sea was rougher there, we tended to go further on to the beach up the road (think Corallia Beach) which has a breakwater out in the sea and is much better for snorkelling. The sunbeds were only 6 euros for two for all day and thought this was cheap compared to Spainl. There is also a really nice beach cafe/restaurant which serves lovely food - very greek and good value for money. Seemed popular with the locals so must be a good place to eat. We didn't eat out much in Coral Bay as staying half board and liked the hotel food too much. Only ate out once at Coral King Restaurant and was a bit disappointed with my meal - steak was very grisly and hard to eat, but my partner really enjoyed his swordfish. Did complain to the waiter and were given two free drinks. Maybe just unlucky with the choice as it seemed a popular place to eat. We went to Blazing Saddles pub across the road from the hotel and was always very friendly and reasonably priced drinks. We ate there on our last day and the food was very good and reasonably priced. They always give you free popcorn with your drinks if your not eating and will sometimes replace it aswell. Entertainment was good in this bar, saw a live band doing Tom Jones impression but didn't get to see that part as was on later, but young lad singer was very good and got the bar involved in the act. Also saw an Elvis impersonator at another bar up the street (an upstairs bar next to Japanese Restaurant) and he was very entertaining and again involved the whole bar. We had hired a car before we went and picked this up at Paphos airport which is about a half hour drive to Coral Bay. We found it quite easy to navigate to our hotel as road system is quite straightforward as long as on main routes. We travelled to various sites on island, but found most of the attractions a bit of a let down, compared to other places we have visited, but are cheap to get into. Tombs of the Kings was OK but there was a lot of rubbish lying around in the tombs which was off-putting and considering it is a world heritage site, we thought it should have been better maintained. Also got very hot while we there even at 10.30am so couldn't stay too long in hot sun. We also went to Kourion Archeaological site which was worth a visit. Had nice covered area to look as mosaics and ruins of a roman house, and also an impressive ampitheatre. Both of these are just outside of Paphos and could be accessed by bus if you didn't have a car. Went to Limassol one day, but was very built up and all one way system which was quite confusing to drive around. Eventually found the harbour, but wasn't that impressed. It had black dirty sand and was very close to a busy main road. Much preferred the peace and tranquility of Coral Bay. We also went to Polis and Latchi. Polis was very small and not much to see, but Latchi was quite a pretty little resort with a shaley beach and nice restaurants. Would definately return to this hotel and resort and would recommend it anyone.
P.S. Watch out for the scratch card touts as even in small place like Coral Bay. But once we said no he did leave us alone, as were wise to their tricks. He tried to say he worked at the hotel and wanted to give us leaflets on the local area, but they are just trying to get you back to their office to flog you a timeshare or similar holiday club scam. Avoid at all costs.

If you are looking for a good quality hotel with all the usual facilities, entertainment and in a great location then this could be the hotel for you. All the Coral Bay shops, bars and restaurants are only a few metres away (but never heard any noise from this in our room) and Coral Bay beach is a short walk. Better still catch the bus right outside the hotel and within 5 minutes you are at Corallia beach - the best in the area. Catch the bus the other way (run very 15 minutes) and in 20 minutes you are in Paphos itself. If you are looking for a great culinary experience this might not be the hotel for you. However having said this and despite us hearing a lot of moans about the food there was a tremendous selection for breakfast and we always found something from the evening buffet that we enjoyed - even my wife who is a very fussy eater. We stayed half board and only had one lunch (which we had instead of an evening meal) and this did appear to have an element of previous evenings' left overs. As mentioned by others check what all inclusive package you have as they have a "light" version which does not include certain alcoholic drinks. This had not been made clear to some guests by their tour operators (OK with TC & Thomsons) and caused arguements. The evening entertainment is what you expect at such hotels ~ very average. However, the entertainment team especially Viktoria worked very hard to make both the day and the evening entertainment enjoyable. We felt the small charge (3.4 Euro per day) for using the tea & coffee facilities in your room is a little petty. Overall we had a great time and would definitely return.

I stayed at the Crown Horizon with my husband and 5 year old son for two weeks this August. It was our 2nd trip to Cyprus this year. In May we stayed near Nissi Bay in a 5* hotel and this August we stayed at the 4* Crown. I can only say that with this limited experience there is a big difference between a 4 and 5* in Cyprus! The rooms are OK and have a very small balcony. We booked a side sea view but the sea is quite a way away. The Crown had pleasant and modern décor being only 3 years old. It is located within yards of the ‘main strip’ of Coral Bay which consists of bars and restaurants. Nicest restaurant is the Italian at the end (La Trattoria Vigna I think it was called. Quite pricey but really nice food. We did struggle to find really nice food in Coral Bay unless we are just fussy! It is not a large ‘strip’ and after 2 weeks was rather tiresome. We booked HB basis but found we ate out for half of our holiday as the food in the hotel was not what we are used to. There was not much choice and not much taste. The hotel and ‘strip’ is very expensive to eat/drink. The pool area at the hotel is quite dirty and as other reviews have said there is no chance of a sunbed unless you get up early. We used the pool in the late afternoon after a day out so it was much easier then to get a bed. The grounds of the hotel are nice and spacious. The childrens play area of a pirate ship and a few swings is very tired and not entirely safe. It was too hot in August for my son to play on it anyway! The beach is a good walk down a main road approx 5/10 min which is not too bad if the beach was decent –it is filthy. It is a sand beach but had cigarette butts in the sand and litter laying everywhere. We went to the beach for 2 days and then decided to find an alternative. If you get the number 15 bus and go up 2 stops you come to the Corallia Beach which is so much nicer, cleaner and cheaper to hire sunbeds. It has a fantastic taverna called Arapis which has amazing food. Most definitely some of the best food we had whilst on holiday. Beware though as it is very popular with locals and the wait can be long but it is worth it. We hired a car from Chris Travel which is just opposite this beach. Really good deal and very trustworthy. Much cheaper than using hotel reps. We had a car for a week and went into Troodos mounatains, visited the Aphrodite waterpark (not many rides and certainly not many for children under 1.2m although a nice childrens area). We also went North to Polis and Latchi (approx 30km from Coral Bay). Latchi is a quaint town and we had a lovely fish meze here and the prices are so much cheaper than in Coral Bay. We found a nice place to snorkel about 10 mins drive along the coast from Coral Bay – the Seacaves. Nice big rocks to sit on and very clear water. The bus service is very good with buses leaving every 15 minutes. Paphos harbour is lovely and so is the old town. Worth a visit in the evenings to see all the local sellers. In summary I wouldn’t recommend the Crown Horizon and most definitely not as a 4* hotel. Entertainment wasn’t bad in the evening. Best was the Acrobats from Ghana – they were fab and really involved the crowd. Maybe we were spoilt by going to the fabulous Nissi Beach in May. We had a lovely holiday but I wouldn’t return to Paphos or the Crown Horizon.

We stayed at this hotel for a week in August this year. The hotel itself is very nice, the pool area is lovely, the rooms are spacious, comfortable and clean, and the location is excellent - seconds from all the bars and restaurants of Coral Bay and from the beach. The only let down was the food. We were half board but stopped eating in the hotel after day 2 and went out to the local restaurants instead. The buffet lunch was poor - not much selection and the food that was on offer was not of good quality. There was generally a greater selection in the evenings, but again it was of poorer quality than you'd expect for a 4* hotel. If the hotel improved this aspect then it'd be great because in all other areas we really couldn't fault the hotel at all.

Right then, Where to start:

We got to the hotel about half 10 PM, when we checked in the receptionist told us we were to late and there was no food available in the hotel, and we had to go out for our meal - we were given a voucher for lunch on our last day in place of dinner.

Breakfast was served 7-10AM
Lunch 12-3PM
Dinner 6:30-9:30PM

Our room (3rd Floor), which we'd paid for the upgrade, I think this consisted of slightly bigger rooms with a small table and two chairs (as you can see from the photo - apologies for the mess - lol)

Our bed had two sweets on each pillow which was a nice touch till I looked a bit closer and they were covered in ants!!!! There was a problem with ants if you left the door open to the small balcony - so be warned!! The beds were considerably comfy for how hard they were. We must of had the lumpiest pillows in the hotels, for a 4 star hotel, you would of thought the bedding would have been a better quality.

The next problem was the air con, on our first night we were still sweating even though we had the air con on High on the lowest temperature, we reported this to the Thompson rep who after reminding her the day after told reception who said that as long as it was below 26 degrees then it was working fine. This was annoying as we had to have it on high all the time whilst we were there and when you were trying to sleep it was so noisy!!!

You had to pay to get your fridge unlocked in your room, which when your paying a lot for your holiday you don't expect to have all these extra little charges which add up!!

The food was average, not very much choice. If you were a veggie then you'd probly have one main option with plain pasta or salad.
The food was not hot most of the time, unless you were lucky and had it as the chef brought it out you'd have to settle with warm food. The salads were appetizing until I found a huge caterpillar in my lettuce, which to say the least put me off having salad with my food. I informed the head waiter about the caterpillar and he just shrugged it off!

Another problem we encountered with the restaurant was that there was such a fast turn around of guests eating that, if you left the table at the same time to get some food that, the table was cleared down and set up for the next people to eat, even if your drinks were still on the table.

If you are expecting the pool area to be tidied then think again, I don't think I once saw anyone collecting the half finished drinks and empty glasses from around the pool, chairs and tables just left around the pool.

If you wanted a sun bed around the pool then you had to be up extra early, we were down there for 8:30 every morning and didn't once get a sun bed by the pool, I think we found that it was much more relaxing to be on the grassy bit down the steps behind the pool, we usually got a sun bed there. Although you did have to fight your way through sun beds and people who had decided to place their sun bed or chairs at the top of the steps so you literally had to climb over them. A lot of people had lilos and balls in the pool which was slightly irritating when all you wanted to do was cool off in the pool and not get drowned by other people in the pool. The pool got very warm in the afternoon, because of the sun, it was more like getting into a hot bath rather than a swimming pool.

The entertainment staff which in the day consisted of two girls, was fairly popular, my only complaint with that was the "5 minute call" they went around the whole pool shouting "5 minutes til......" which was slightly annoying.

We were on a half board basis which was ok, we popped out at lunch, we went to a couple of places for lunch but mostly brought a roll, a dough nut and a bag of crisps from the supermarket, which we ate back at our sun beds.

There is an advise page in your hotel room which says you aren't allowed to bring bottles of water from outside the hotel into the hotel, but everybody does and no body said anything to us about it.

Whilst we were in Cyprus the weather was scorching, in the 40's, we suggest a high sun factor and have lots of water and make sure you don't lie in the sun all day, we used factor 30 all week and spent a lot of that in the shade as it was so hot. We still got a nice tan.

Eating out was not as expensive as we'd thought, when we'd told our friends we were going to Cyprus they all warned us how expensive it was, but don't worry, it wasn't noticeably more expensive than other places we've been.

We didn't go on any trips, we did how ever go down to the harbor on the bus, it was dead easy, to get to the harbor, you needed the bus stop on the same side as the hotel, in front of the motorbike rental place and need the number 15. Watch out for the people giving out free Scratch card's - they are a con, so just politely say no, most of the people doing it are young English. There is a Peacocks and Debehams in Paphos Harbor for all you shopping addicts (the prices aren't that different)

We visited Coral Bay Beach in the evening, it was too hot for us to walk down there in the sun, I did notice it was rammed with sun beds, and I guess it could get V.V.V busy! Our Thompson rep told us about another beach but we couldn't find this one.

Within Coral Bay, there is not a lot of places to eat or drink, especially if your after the traditional Cypriot food. Approx 30 bars and restaurants on the main strip.

In conclusion, I would not go to Coral Bay again, I think future holidays we will go for the self catering apartments or villas.

Would I recommend it to anybody....... Only if the price was right!!

Having read varying reviews prior to our depature I was concerned that we had made the right descision. The Crown Resort Horizon gave us the best holiday we have ever had. The hotel was clean well maintained the staff friendly and the rooms very comfortable. We have two teenage boys who made plenty of friends and had no problem finding things to do, water polo was a particular favourite! The food was very good and always plenty of choice hence the expanding waistlines! Lettuce leaves from now on! The animation team worked very hard but never pressured you into joining in activites and the evening entertainment was also excellent. I would definitely recommend this hotel and have already decided to return next year.
The only complaint we had was the beach at coral bay was very dirty, mainly cigarette ends. I am amazed at the review dated 11.08.08 and certainly didnt encounter any problems with having to wait for service. This is a great family orientated hotel and there were lots of Cypriot guests staying during our stay and for me thats a compliment. Don't be put off by negative comments, have a great holiday.
