Firstly and most importantly do not take the bad reviews as gospel!! I believe that every review has merit in it somewhere but I do believe that some people have been overly critical of the Basilica - when frankly in my estimation the hotel was absolutely excellent! I booked the hotel with my gorgeous girlfriend 5 days before we arrived, with slight apprehension taking into account some of the reviews here...And i was pleasantly right in my choice as the hotel really did deliver on all fronts.

To start with lets cut the rubbish that the Basilica is past its glory and not worth the cost - to those of you who expect 5 star accommodation when paying a fraction of the cost - shame on you! Do you live in 5 star luxury at home!!?? Of course not. Yes the Basilica isn’t your Saville Row of Hotels, but by Joe it isn’t half bad for what you pay! It is a very decent, clean, and pleasant hotel with very polite staff, almost daily room/towel changing and probably the best pool I witnessed in any of the surrounding hotels. Yes it isn’t particularly busy with night karaoke, or daytime pool games - but if you want that then go and stay at the bargain basement, Chav and Dave Apartments where you can’t hear a thing! But in all seriousness the Basilica isn’t a party central hotel, but than I don’t know why some people have complained about that because IT DOESNT TRY TO BE IN THE FIRST INSTANCE!! The Basilica is a quiet, idyllic hotel, set away from the main road and bang in the middle of everything you need.

We were very fortunate to be offered a 3 bed apartment, having paid only for a studio - and what we had was amazing! 3 bedrooms, all air conditioned, a clean new kitchen, new bathrooms, and nice furniture. I keep saying that yes it wasn’t the best furniture in the known universe or the most amazing bathroom - but it was clean, tidy and well kept and for gods sake you're on holiday - Do you really care that the cushions in the armchair aren’t comfy enough!!??? If you do then best book a holiday in your living room.

The supermarket across the road is rather like a Tescos, offering everything from fresh fruit, vegetables, cereals, and dairy products to everything you'd expect from a supermarket. A 2 min walk will deliver the waterfront, as well as a numerous eateries and restaurants along the promenade. A 10 min walk will take you to the harbour itself with possibly the bets fish and seafood restaurants that Cyprus has to offer!

The main shopping centre in the upper town is a short bus journey away with the bus stop only a 2 min walk around the corner from the Basilica. Oh a quick word of warning if you do decide to venture to the Water Theme Park take your own food - the restaurant at the park probably offered the worst food ive ever eaten! On the plus side the Basilica is located just 2 mins from a fabulous Italian restaurant which did the possible the best lasagne and meatball spaghetti ive ever eaten!!!!

And finally the aptly labelled Bar Street is also just a 10 min stroll through the resort.

All in all you really couldn’t ask for a better location.

I know that personal experiences differ immensely, and I fully appreciate how some visitors may not have had an enjoyable time - but i do really believe that mostly in these cases it is to do with the individual rather than the accommodation. Holidays are what you make of them - some people (unlike me) expect to pay next to nothing for a week in the sun, expecting plush royalty….people get a reality check!

Enjoy the sun…..enjoy Paphos and Cyprus and if you can ..then stay at the Basilica - because i almost definitely will be again.

Happy travels...

Booked this 3 days before we went.. read a few reveiws and was expecting the worse.... Actually it was plesantly supprising. We booked a superiour two bedroomed apartment and it was very clean and roomy with airconditioning, the towels were changed every day and the sheets every other. The pool was ideal the kids 4 and 5 had a great time. Its situated right oppisite the main supermarket which sells everthing you'd expect to see at home and more, very easy to feed the young kids. The harbour is a short walk away with nice resturants you must try theos, and the night life of the main centre again is only a short walk away if its bars and discos your after. We had agreat time here, very easy holiday, quiet location with all you want within about 5-10 mins walking time weather it be quiet or mad crazy night out. I would recommend the Basilica to all walks for a great central yet quiet location. Brilliant!! would i go back ? yes i would , as the weather was fantastic too!

The Basilica Gardens is situated very near to the harbour in an excellent position. Unfortunately part of the harbour front was blocked off during our stay as the harbour paths were being relaid. This work is due to be finished in May 2008. There is a large supermarket opposite the Basilica Gardens which is helpful. Taxi's pass by the Basilica every few minutes. Also the bus stop is just around the corner. We stayed in a 2 bedroom appartment on the second floor overlooking the pool. It was basic and had maid service every other day. Air conditioning units in every room. The sheets and towels changed 3 times during our weeks stay. We found the reception staff very helpful. There was no lift. We booked this holiday at short notice and for what we paid and for were it is situated would definately stay there again in the future. Its not the best accomodation I've stayed in at Paphos but neither is it the worst. I would rate it overall 7/10 although my fellow travellers rated it 6/10.

I went here with 3 girlfriends and we had booked a 2-bed apartment to give us plenty of space. We were delighted to be given a 3-bed apt (wasn't even advertised in the brochure) which looked like it hadn't ever been used before. Great kitchen with loads of equipment and dishwasher!!! 2 bathrooms and an extra toilet and huge bedrooms. Ask for the Penelope block - it does seem that different blocks have different standards. Pool was nice but not a huge amount of sunloungers - especially limited when the other Brits feel the need to reserve them at all times, even when they appear to be out for the day!!! Located right by the harbour and also Bar Street so saved the cost of bus/taxi. Overall a nice resort with a good mix of visitors - not many loud or lairy groups which suited us fine.
