Firstly and most importantly do not take the bad reviews as gospel!! I believe that every review has merit in it somewhere but I do believe that some people have been overly critical of the Basilica - when frankly in my estimation the hotel was absolutely excellent! I booked the hotel with my gorgeous girlfriend 5 days before we arrived, with slight apprehension taking into account some of the reviews here...And i was pleasantly right in my choice as the hotel really did deliver on all fronts.
To start with lets cut the rubbish that the Basilica is past its glory and not worth the cost - to those of you who expect 5 star accommodation when paying a fraction of the cost - shame on you! Do you live in 5 star luxury at home!!?? Of course not. Yes the Basilica isn’t your Saville Row of Hotels, but by Joe it isn’t half bad for what you pay! It is a very decent, clean, and pleasant hotel with very polite staff, almost daily room/towel changing and probably the best pool I witnessed in any of the surrounding hotels. Yes it isn’t particularly busy with night karaoke, or daytime pool games - but if you want that then go and stay at the bargain basement, Chav and Dave Apartments where you can’t hear a thing! But in all seriousness the Basilica isn’t a party central hotel, but than I don’t know why some people have complained about that because IT DOESNT TRY TO BE IN THE FIRST INSTANCE!! The Basilica is a quiet, idyllic hotel, set away from the main road and bang in the middle of everything you need.
We were very fortunate to be offered a 3 bed apartment, having paid only for a studio - and what we had was amazing! 3 bedrooms, all air conditioned, a clean new kitchen, new bathrooms, and nice furniture. I keep saying that yes it wasn’t the best furniture in the known universe or the most amazing bathroom - but it was clean, tidy and well kept and for gods sake you're on holiday - Do you really care that the cushions in the armchair aren’t comfy enough!!??? If you do then best book a holiday in your living room.
The supermarket across the road is rather like a Tescos, offering everything from fresh fruit, vegetables, cereals, and dairy products to everything you'd expect from a supermarket. A 2 min walk will deliver the waterfront, as well as a numerous eateries and restaurants along the promenade. A 10 min walk will take you to the harbour itself with possibly the bets fish and seafood restaurants that Cyprus has to offer!
The main shopping centre in the upper town is a short bus journey away with the bus stop only a 2 min walk around the corner from the Basilica. Oh a quick word of warning if you do decide to venture to the Water Theme Park take your own food - the restaurant at the park probably offered the worst food ive ever eaten! On the plus side the Basilica is located just 2 mins from a fabulous Italian restaurant which did the possible the best lasagne and meatball spaghetti ive ever eaten!!!!
And finally the aptly labelled Bar Street is also just a 10 min stroll through the resort.
All in all you really couldn’t ask for a better location.
I know that personal experiences differ immensely, and I fully appreciate how some visitors may not have had an enjoyable time - but i do really believe that mostly in these cases it is to do with the individual rather than the accommodation. Holidays are what you make of them - some people (unlike me) expect to pay next to nothing for a week in the sun, expecting plush royalty….people get a reality check!
Enjoy the sun…..enjoy Paphos and Cyprus and if you can ..then stay at the Basilica - because i almost definitely will be again.
