We stayed at this hotel in early December (OK, I know, that was a long time ago, but I have only just started using Tripadvisor). It was brilliant, mainly due to it being peaceful with a limited number of guests. We got a deal (laterooms), so that B&B was only £50/night !!!!!!! with a room overlooking the Med.

The staff were all excellent as was the food for breakfast. Nothing seemed too much trouble and, combined with the lovely warm Cypriot winter sun, exploring the Island, eating outside at lunch takes some beating.

From a quick look at Tariffs, it seems as though the prices have risen, but nevertheless, if you fancy getting away from the grey gloomy grottiness of a UK winter, this is hotel is highly recommended.

Room Tip: See if it's possible to look out over the Med, but as the hotel is on a peninsular, a good view...

Thank you for taking time to post a review of our hotel.

We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay at Thalassa Boutique Hotel & Spa and that you appreciated the total relaxation and peacefulness that the hotel aims to offer all guests. With only 58 rooms we ensure attention to every detail. Being a boutique hotel and a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World are prices are always value for money although you did get an exceptionally good price on your first stay. All rooms enjoy views of the sea whether sunrise or sunset so all guests may enjoy stunning view for their private balcony.

We do hope we have the opportunity of welcoming you back.

Best regards,

We stayed here for a week in October 2012. We wanted a peaceful, relaxing break in the sunshine in luxurious surroundings. We achieved most of this but that's not quite the full story.

We selected this hotel on the basis of some previous reviews, the hotel website and - most importantly - as it has Small Luxury Hotel of the World accreditation. Having spent a week there, I'd strongly encourage a revisit and audit by the SLH team as it is certainly not to the same quality as other hotels in their collection. And here's why...

The location is excellent - it is in a quiet - if slightly run down - area, it has a supermarket, a bar and restaurant within a short walk. There are lovely views from the quiet poolside and from sea-view rooms. Locally there is a regular bus service connecting most parts of the island and the price is extremely reasonable.

Onto the hotel itself... firstly, and perhaps most importantly, service varied hour by hour, day by day - from the highly attentive to the completely disinterested. The staff themselves ranged from helpful, warm and friendly to the belligerent and borderline sleazy.

The room was relatively clean but as other reviewers have mentioned, they definitely need attention. Five star they most certainly are not. We had a suite that had a lounge area, double balcony and two bathrooms - in effect, it was two connecting rooms that had been knocked through. The space was good yet the decor was bland. The furniture was tired, tatty and cheap. The bed wasn't much better either and the pillows were so hard and lumpy they felt like they'd recently been excavated from a local quarry. Simply not good enough.

Fresh fruit was provided on the first day and was rotten by the time we left after a week. Really?

The tiny in-room television belonged in a museum. The reception was awful - for both local and 'international' channels. For information, the only English-speaking channel was a news channel which was absolutely fine as we don't go on holiday to watch TV but a hotel shouldn't boast multiple English-speaking channels when there is only one.

The bathroom was small but acceptable, the coarse towels were painful at times and the toiletries were cheap and branded with another hotels details. Again, perhaps not the most important aspect for many guests but for an SLH property, it is poor.

Moving on to the Spa, we took one treatment and had a similar issue as raised by another recent reviewer. The male masseuse make clear his desire and intention to massage my partner. She wasn't happy with that and neither was I. When we requested a female for her, he wasn't at all happy, acting somewhat unprofessionally. We later learnt that he had something of a penchant for attractive young ladies and were informed by one of his colleagues that he made a habit of this approach.

The pool area was busy during our entire stay - there was a plentiful supply of fresh bathing towels, a helpful pool attendant along with a particularly erratic poolside drinks service. It could be twice in ten minutes or literally hours between service rounds. Short staffed? Or too hot to work? I'm undecided, but either way, it got annoying.

The pool itself is large and unfortunately is in need of attention. Many tiles from the mosaic pool tiling had come off and littered the poolside and the floor of the pool. Painful on your feet and piles of them by the pool went ignored by staff. There is no beach at the hotel and the access to the rocks and the sea is via a set of rickety metal steps reached through the 'beach' bar.

One saving grace was the food - the quality was excellent. A diverse menu, created by an obviously talented team who took care in their work, delivering innovative, beautifully presented meals. We stayed on a half-board basis and whilst drinks and food not included in this rate were expensive, there was a good selection and the quality and portion sizes were very good.

Breakfast was a slightly less impressive experience. We ended up setting our own table on 3 out of 7 days and fresh fruit juice ran out on numerous occasions too. Again, not the end of the world and didn't spoil our stay but it does impact on the start to your day. You'd expect issues like this at the budget end of the market, not at an expensive, luxury, five star hotel.

So, in summary, nice location and the weather made for a relaxing, peaceful break for us. However, our stay not without issues, some staff were lovely, others lecherous and rude. Food excellent and rooms poor. Would we return? No. Would we recommend it to others? No. Is there better in the area? I'd certainly hope so. Was it value for money? No. Is it to SLH published standards? Certainly not.

As a quick footnote, we were regularly told by staff, other guests and locals that Cyprus is more or less wholly dependent on it's tourist trade. You wouldn't think it based on the Thalassa Boutique Hotel & Spa. It could be amazing, but sadly, it isn't.

Room Tip: Aim for a sea view room

Dear Guest,

We have read your comments which are very important to us and all have and will be reviewed by the Hotel Management. Please note that the Thalassa Boutique Hotel & Spa take their SLH membership very seriously and aim to meet all guests preferences and needs at all times.

The hotel is located in Coral Bay which is a beautiful tranquil area adjoining the UNESCO protected Akamas peninsular, so this area is not at all built up and fortunately has development restrictions to maintain the beauty of the area. This is preferred by the great majority of guests who return to the hotel again and again.

The hotel has a number of bedding options available as each guest has a different preference and although impossible to meet everyone's individual taste we do try our best. Should the matter of pillows and bedding been mentioned while at the hotel we would have done our utmost to satisfy your needs.

With regards to the English TV channels, Cyprus is currently unable to receive BBC 1, BBC 2, ITV via satellite as used to be the case. Thalassa Boutique Hotel & Spa had already paid to become a member to once again provide these channels to guests but is waiting for this new system to become available in Cyprus and its coming very soon.

The toiletries in your room were of our sister hotel and this was a decision to promote our sister hotel to Thalassa guests, this idea may not have been the best and we have reverted back to using our own toiletries.

We regards to the pool tiles, this is unfortunately an issue that mostly everyone who has a tiled pool in Cyprus faces as after the hot summer months of 40 degrees tiles do tend to fall off. We are unable to fix these while guests are in the hotel and enjoying the pool services as this would mean closing the pool off for at least 7 days to fix everything. This is however a maintenance job that is done every winter.

We are delighted that you enjoyed all meals at the hotel and the stunning location.

Once again it is our absolute aim to make our guest feel at home and enjoy their stay at the hotel and in Cyprus and wish for all to return with fond memories. We hope you would give us another chance to extend our hospitality to you should you be considering a holiday in Cyprus again.

Kind regards,

Group Sales & Marketing Department

Good points:

Fantastic location / sea views, no pesky kids (!), comfy bed, excellent bathroom, good restaurant, friendly staff, lovely pool, decent breakfast, peaceful.

Minor niggles:

Very weak wifi in rooms, tv in room belongs in a museum, selection of tv channels very limited and bizarre, fruit in room on day one and then not replaced, indoor pool is only a metre deep so not great for swimming. No communal sauna (Seperate for men / woman). Steam room did not work for 2 days. Mini bar prices were extortionate. Outside area not cleared daily - my apple cor was there for 4 days.

Finally I booked through expedia and when I arrived the hotel had dropped the room rate to 99 euros so I over paid by 35 euros a day which was infuriating. The hotel new about this and did nothing about it. A free upgrade for even 1 night would have been a nice gesture - the hotel was only half full si this would not have cost them anything.

All in all we had a relaxing break and would probably go back. Special mention for the General Manager George who was very amusing.

We were upgraded to the Gaia suite after going just after the high season right at the beginning of november where the weather was still amazing. The room was absolutely incredible with 3 huge balconies to enjoy the best views in every direction paphos has to offer. The room was modernly decorated and very clean, including your own bar, jacuzzi, and sauna. The only problems with it was there was no outlets in the bathroom and the internet was very slow all around the hotel if thats an issue for you on vacation! Also as it is in most of Cyprus the light switches and outlets are always awkwardly located inside or outside the rooms you need them in. The restaurants were ok but nothing to write home about, a very large selection for breakfast was also a little bonus. Overall the unexpected upgrade into such an amazing room really made the trip and was by far the best hotel room I have stayed at before, I might have a different opinion if it was one of the regular rooms but if you can afford this massive suite it is definitely worth it. Location of the hotel is a little out of the way from a lot of things to do in the paphos area so I would suggest a car hire, there are numerous places to do this cheaply but if you have to return it to the Larnaca Airport it is a 50 euro added charge . The front desk was very friendly and willing to help in any little situation and other hotel services were top notch.

Room Tip: Elevator is somewhat slow, Rooms on the south side are more likely to have the best view, get the Ga...

We recently stayed here for one week on a bed and breakfast basis & on the way back to the airport for our return flight were asking ourselves "could we see us returning in the future"?
Check in at the beginning of our stay was courteous and swift without being warm and friendly.
Our room, on the top floor, allowed us to soak in the sunsets from our balcony which overlooked the Thalassa's neighbour, the Coral Beach Hotel & Resort.
Breakfast was a mixed experience. On more than one occasion, the restaurant staff appeared to be short-staffed and somewhat stressed. Table cloths, if stained by previous breakfast guests, were not replaced. Choice of food was adequate but not quite up to the mark expected of a 5-star hotel.
What the Thalassa really needs is a marketing manager & strategy. On most evenings, the Lounge Bar and two Restaurants were near-empty. We dined out every night, in one of the local Cypriot restaurants which were a 20 minute walk up the hill.
Also, if sunbathing guests had a much improved poolside service during the day, the hotel would witness soaring profits. Maybe the Thalassa is a not-for-profit business? It felt like it.
It has a superb location with panoramic views. The rooms are well appointed and the pool and garden areas are sufficiently inviting that a large proportion of the guests do not leave the Hotel grounds for most of their stay there.
Would we return? Possibly but we would spend 6 days as guests and one day providing some internal marketing advice.

Room Tip: Ask for a sunset facing room on the top floor.

We booked through SLH and received an upgrade to a lovely suite overlooking the sunrise side of Coral Bay. We chose Cyprus for a relaxing autumn break because it is sunny and normally 25-28 degrees. The hotel stands in a quiet location on its own at the end of part of the bay with views of the sea from every room. The guests are mainly couples or singles both young and old wanting a relaxing time on their own. No children under 14 are allowed. If you want entertainment it is just next door at the Coral Bay resort and yes we did go to the nightclub several times for a bit of fun! But during our 12 day stay we just chilled out and enjoyed the peace and quiet and the excellent breakfasts and extensive a la carte menus in the main restaurant and the separate fish restaurant. We last stayed in Paphos 25 years ago when it was a small village and Coral Bay was undeveloped. Some may like what it has now become but we just stayed put in our hotel grounds.

What made our holiday special was the professionalism and friendliness of the staff. The team in this hotel is quite exceptional.

We feel that we had good value for our room rate and half board deal. We can understand those who have complained that the hotel is expensive and may not have had our deal but this is in part due to the pound's weakness against the over inflated euro. However the hotel management told us that they are cost conscious and their 2013 rates will reflect this.

The Thalasa has been a regular hotel for my Wife and I. You could always guarantee comfort, relaxation with a touch of class. Unfortunately, our last stay will probably be our last. To be fair, the facilities are still quality however, the ambience has changed somewhat. For the first time ever we witnessed a number of guests complaining about various standards, such as the breakfast, which was always something to look forward to. Also, they have introduced themed nights which they pressured you into attending. Moreover, reduced staffing in the evenings resulted in you waiting too long between courses. What a shame
