“Amazing Holiday will be returning”
Reviewed October 11, 2013

I have visited alot of places across the globe so my expectatioons tend to be high, this hotel was amazing, the food was plentiful and has lots of choice even for a fussy eater like me,they had a roast joint on every night and the food was very fresh, drinks was brilliant too, most all inclusive hotels I have that I have been to only serve beer wine, whisky, gin and vodka but here they serve everything and they come to you for your order so no queing up.
The thing that makes this hotel amazing is the Entertainment team, they work so hard all day and the shows at night are amazing this is a must see, Katie (The magician) made my holiday a rememorible one her dancing was amazing totally proffessional, we will definatly be returning back to this hotel, it was very clean, lovely beaches all round a supurb holiday :)

My friend and I have just come back from our 6th consecutive holiday at this wonderful hotel.

We got the room we requested and the standard was as good as ever. The animation team worked as hard as ever both day and night under the wonderful supervision of Dedo (even though one of the animation team had a bereavement in her family).

On a previous review someone has comment that the food was very English and what I understand that is because the chefs were trained by the British back in the day. We loved the different roasts every evening.

Getting ready to book for 2014 to meet up with old friends that we have made over the years.

Room Tip: pay the extra for a sea view but having said that most rooms are good.

The Louis Phaethon is situated on the outskirts of Paphos, the furthest most located hotel on the Paphos beach strip, but don’t let this put you off. The entertainment, food and drink is provided throughout the day and as value for money you cannot find better, especially if you are a family with children.

A great deal of this feedback has been mentioned by other correspondents, and there may be some repetition here, but hopefully I’ve included a little more information and a few ‘tips’ which you may find useful. If you do, print this off and take it with you as an easy reference, I did with other reports and found them very useful for orienteering around the hotel.
If you want to know more read on....

Because it is situated on the outskirts of Paphos, the transfer time from the airport is only 20 – 30 minutes, depending on which hotels are called at first, however the downside of its location, close to the airport, means that you are regularly sat under the most used flight paths for aircraft flying into and out of Paphos airport. But don’t let this put you off, the noise is not that bad, and sometimes quite interesting watching the different type of aircraft that use the islands second largest airport.

Walking into Paphos Harbour can take up to an hour depending on your fitness levels, but use the beachside promenade to make that journey at least once in your holiday; I promise you that you will not be disappointed. The beachside promenade takes you through every single hotel leading up the harbour itself and you are able to see how the other half lives in some of them. If it’s really hot however, make sure you cream up as you can get seriously burned when doing this walk.

Alternatively you can take the local bus into and out of Paphos Harbour. For 1.50 euros, take the 611/612 as a ‘single trip’ anywhere on its route. For the harbour, stay on until the bus station in the harbour, and you can get the same bus back, as the bus stops right outside the hotel.

If you fancy going a little bit further, then buy the 5 euro ‘day pass’. This allows you on as many journeys as you wish for the whole day. Take the 610/618 out of Paphos bus station either to the old market or into Paphos Old Town, and the 615 up to Coral Bay beach and the Tombs of the Kings.

The taxis are very good value too, but ask them for the price before you get in. They can be a little more expensive than the bus but if there are a few of you, the convenience makes it worthwhile.

The Hotel

The hotel is well set out, and as you enter the hotel the reception is immediately to the left. As you come through the door, the Vienna Bar is to your right and the Atrium Bar (the main bar) is to your front and left. If you carried on walking along the pathway that separates the two the main bars the Esperides Restaurant is down the steps and slightly to your right, just past the Vienna Bar. This is where the main meals are taken.

As you walk into the reception area and into the Atrium Bar, take a look around you and upwards. The set out of the walkways with the overhanging greenery makes you feel you on the inside of a small cruise liner.

Reception is manned 24/7 and the staff are very helpful. Room safes, wi-fi internet and most other things can be ordered from this reception desk.

TIP 1: You can order a ‘slot’ for the courtesy room at reception for your last day, but this can only be done on the day of your departure around breakfast time. Be quick, the slots go fast !

The hotel is neat, and well set out, especially in the reception area, but could do with some cosmetic upgrades as you go onto the various residential landings, but by no means is it a let-down. We were very happy with the layout throughout our stay. It is a very practical and clean hotel.

A small shop next to reception provides all you need which saves you from going into town should you need fresh sun tan lotion or aftersun, or a last minute gift for those back home. The prices are higher as you would expect than in town, but there are other shop within walking distance if you don’t fancy paying that price.

TIP 2: A great idea being done by the Thomson group is a ‘swap shop’ which is situated right next to the main reception. It’s just a simple box in which people who are leaving deposit their unwanted ‘liquids’, sun tan lotion, aftersun, mozzie spray, deodorants etc, which if you don’t mind using seconds will save you a fortune. But please play the game fair, and don’t take everything, but more importantly leave your deposits when you depart. The best days for this swap shops is Wednesday and Saturday.

A car rental shop is also situated near to reception, but the owner does not like to rent out for single days, a multiple of days is a minimum required, so if you need it just for the one day you might have to go elsewhere or try on the day to see if there are any cars available. When I enquired about a single day I wasn't made to feel welcome, so would have gone elsewhere in any case, but you never know..try your luck !

As a general figure a single day will cost you around 70 – 80 euros, including insurance.

TIP 3: Talking of insurance, it only covers you for main road travel; it does not cover you for off road travel unless the vehicle is designed for it. All rental cars are easily distinguishable by the 'red' registration plates, and when we went on the jeep safari excursion, we saw plenty of ‘red plates’ off road, on terrain that was clearly not suitable for the vehicle, so be careful to inspect it when renting, and any funny noise..take it back !!

A Wedding Venue

Several weddings took place whilst we were there, and to be honest it was good to see them. The views across the sea is amazing and makes a good backdrop for the photos, but if you have your wedding there, be prepared to get some unexpected guests in the background as the 'chapel' is right next to where people sunbathe and the Helios Bar. It was funny to see the Thomson rep ushering people who just wanted to 'oggle' at the back, forgetting that they were also in the wedding shots !!

The Rooms

We had a family room, and to be honest for more than two of us, it would have been a squeeze, but as it was, there was plentiful space for the two of us.

TIP 4: As a guide, if you get an odd number room, then you will be facing out of the hotel across the car park and road, though some odd numbers do have a restricted view of the sea. If you get an even number room, then the chances are you will get a really good view of the sea, and you will also be over the pools. The only downside is if you have children and your rooms ( the lower even numbers ) are over the veranda outside the Atrium bar then there may be some noise up until and possibly after midnight as this is where everyone is drawn to after the evening’s entertainment draws to a close.

Power to the room is gained by putting the metal key fob into the slot right next to the door near the light switches. In our room, this facility was broken which meant we could leave the air con on all day ( Happy Days ! )

Access to your balcony can be tricky first time. The main door is identified by the handle which has to be unlocked by sliding two bolts above and below the main handle, don’t try and open the door whilst doing this as it just sticks.

TIP 5: Use your finger to lift and draw down on the finger latches both above and below the handle, and the door will slide open. Be warned though, the air conditioning will switch off once the door is opened, and your room will be open to the dreaded mozzie !

TIP 6: I really do advise people to take an electric mozzie repellent that can be plugged in, as well as the sprays and wipes, as the mosquito is a real pain..literally – but remember, this is a three pin plug country so the electric one you have for Spain will not work unless you have an adaptor !!

The balcony has a small table and two chairs and an air dryer so that you can dry all your swimwear. If you are lucky enough to get the high even numbered hotel room you will also get a fantastic view of the sunset, which believe me is glorious !

The room also has a key locked safe. At 3 euros a day this is great value, and with it being a key lock, there are no codes to remember ! Just don’t lose the key as a replacement is very costly.

There is a small fridge in the room, which is useful to keep the water and anything else cool. In our room there appeared to be a key lock on it, but trust me, give it a tug and it will open, they are not locked !

As stated previously, this country follows the British standard in most things, and the humble three pin socket is gods send. There is also a hairdryer included in one of the drawers which gives out a good blast of warm air.

A luggage storage cupboard was also provided in out room which meant that we could hide away our suitcases.

The Facilities

4 swimming pools, some designated especially for the smaller child, and enough sunbeds to cater for everyone is really useful, but there are still people getting up at silly o’clock in the morning to put their towels out. The sunbeds aren’t that all comfortable, especially if you are a ‘lie and fry’ type, but for families with young children, I doubt whether you will have enough time to lie on one for any great length of time anyway.

TIP 7: The hotel does not provide towels for sunbathing and discourages people from taking their bath towels out. So spare enough baggage allowance to bring your own over, or buy locally, or as one person did, throw them in the bin to save on weight going back !

The waterpark which is part of the complex is completely free for all residents and a great bit of fun, for young and old! There is a height restriction for some of the rides, the 'blue run' which is done on a foam padded mat and the 'red run', which is done without any aids (and hurts a little on the tube joints) but the 'yellow run', which is done in single or double ‘rings’ is available to all but the very little ones, especially when done with an adult. This is great fun..you have to try it !

TIP 8: For those of you who take your own lilo/airbed, plenty are left behind usually on a Wednesday or Saturday evening if you want to save some weight in your luggage and you are prepared to wait. They will be found floating in the pools, or by the side.

TIP 9: If you do take your own lilo/waterbed, then don’t waste your time blowing it up. There is a free air valve at the Water park. It’s situated to the right of the main slides frame, which faces out onto the children pool area; it’s usually hanging on the cage. If it isn’t there, ask one of the attendants.

All pools are well patrolled by lifeguards, who also monitor any rule breaches with the sharp use of a whistle
.
The main pool is where most of the ‘Animation Team’ events take place during the day, between 10 – 12 noon and 3pm – 5pm.

On cloudy days, and indoor pool is available near to the Chariots entertainment centre ( on the -1 level ) At least one hour of the day, this pool is adults only.

Next to the indoor pool is a gym. It’s one of the biggest and best equipped gyms I’ve seen at a hotel and much better than the lip service paid by other hotels claiming to have a ‘gym’. No indoor classes are provided in this gym.

Bars and Restaurants

As previously stated the main restaurant provides an excellent service and is where breakfast and evening meal are taken. Our compliments to the chef and his staff for some excellent food whilst we were there.

The main restaurant has an outside section where you can eat in the sun, and this is lovely because of some of the views you get, especially in the evening.

You can also have lunch here too, but most people go to the poolside ‘Helios Pool Restaurant’ which serves food from about 10 am every day. The food in Helios is the ‘snacky’ stuff, chips, small hamburgers, fish fingers, pasta etc.. but around the side there is also a Chinese selection which can be tried.

The Helios also has a bar and a self serve section where you can get soft drinks and beer. Ice cream is self service also and plentiful!

The staff attending the bars are excellent!! They attend you really well and it is very rare that you have an empty glass in front of you. All the staff work hard to make your stay as pleasurable as possible, but four of the bar staff in particular made our stay really pleasurable, they are Claudia Anna and Ivan ( in the Atrium Bar ) and Amanda ( in the Vienna Bar ) If you see them tell them they have been mentioned !! All the local drinks and cocktails are included in the ‘all inclusive’ tab so enjoy !!

Entertainment

The Animation Team’s exploits have been mentioned a great deal in previous correspondence, and I can only concur with what they have said. I have to wonder where they get their energy from, as they are on the go from 10 am in the morning until almost midnight ( and beyond ), whether it’s organising Zumba, aquarobics, archery, shuffleboard, killer darts. They even escort you to your table for evening meal, present Bingo and provide the ‘main entertainment event’ in the Chariots entertainment centre, they have a pretty full day !

We thought everyone in the Animation Team were wonderful, but special thanks to Katie, Lisa, Victoria, Chloe and Jodie for making it all that more special.

There is also the occasional tribute act provided as entertainment, but these poor people have to try and contend with children who have just finished their ‘kids disco’ and are still full of energy.

One act ‘Robbie Williams’, had to put up with kids running all over the stage whilst he was trying to perform, their parents seem oblivious that he was trying to give a good performance. It spoiled the night really.

The Main Event provided by the Animation team was excellent in every sense. I have been on cruise ships and some of the performances, especially with the difference in resources available to the Animation Team were very impressive. The Choreography was well thought out and brought out the best of the team and the vocals were really on form. Top class performances all round!!!

Wi-Fi

The hotel provide a wi-fi service that covers the whole of the hotel and pool areas, however you do have to pay for it.

You can choose from two ‘accumulative accounts’ with a time period of 1 hour for 5 euros and 3 hours for 10 euros. With these accounts you login using a distinct username and password, use the wi-fi and then log out (don’t forget to so this!) and the rest of your time is saved, so it can be used over your whole holiday period. The good thing is that as soon as your time is up, it just stops and no chance of being over charged. You can re-charge a second time period if you so wish from then on.

The third account is the ‘Daily Pass’ with a countdown timer of 24 hours (it can’t be stopped once activated ) this costs 15 euros per 24 hours.

TIP 10: The local telephone network is CYVODAFONE, and you need to make sure you have agreed with your local network provider that your phone will work in Cyprus – I didn’t and I found that my phone wouldn’t connect to the local network which was frustrating for me, but my wife’s connected automatically. Won’t make that mistake again!

Excursions

Many excursions are sold by the reps. We only tried one; the Akamas Jeep Safari.

Lead by the tour guide who likes to be called Zeus ( but is the splitting image of Arnold Vosolo who played the ‘Mummy’ role in the 1999 film ‘The Mummy’ !) this was very good value for money, and his commentary was both informative and very funny !

The tour takes you around river gorges near to Paphos, Aphrodite’s well, Lara Beach where all the turtles lay their eggs and back to another beach nearby in Latchi where you can rest and snorkel. At a cost of 75 euros each, its does seem expensive, but the views are great. I would have liked a little more time at Lara Beach and Aphrodite’s well (try and spot the eels in the pool there ) but it was good value for money.

The lunch is provided in Latchi and to be honest was the best meal I have had in Cyprus off site. It was a ‘meze’ type, but the food just kept on coming and the wine was free too!

We also thought about going on the Wave Dancer Firework Display, the entertainment and food is very good but the last time we tried it the fireworks were disappointing, and according to some guests they were the same this year so we gave it a miss, but I always say, try it and see !

TIP 11: The Pirate Ship and the VIP Catamaran ( and one other which I couldn't identify ) are also sold by the reps and locally. These may be good on paper, but what they might not tell you is that the ships do anchor in the bay just outside the hotel for rest, recuperation and food, so if you do use these excursions, chances are you will be looking from the ship right back at the hotel where you are staying if you use these tours. Check it out first before booking!

The Beach

There isn’t a beach to speak of; there is one about 250m to the left of the hotel, but to be honest its nothing to write home about. There is a small section of the beach outside the hotel which has sunbeds and a place to sit in the shade. We found it really relaxing there out of the hubbub of the main pools. You also get a good view of the weddings that take place.

The sea is very shallow and very inviting, but you will need sea shoes, as the sea bed is rocky which can be uncomfortable. There is also lots of seaweed, but don’t be put off by this.

A Beach Sports centre is right next to the hotel, but does not form part of it. Prices can be a little expensive but as a one off, why not ! You can also hire seas fishing gear here, but with a single hook, you’re unlikely to catch anything.. I tried… Apparently the fish like ‘prawns’ so if they are doing prawns one evening..save some.. and for just 10 euros its a great day in the sun for those who like fishing !

Learn the local language

All of the staff speak excellent English but nothing pleases people more than saying a few Greek words. Here are just three that raises a smile with cleaning and bar staff. I will write them phonetically as my Greek spelling is not up to much !

Yammas – Cheers !
Kelly mera – Good morning ( not to be mixed up with Kally mari which is fried squid )
Efferisto – Thank you

Finally, would we go again?

We really enjoyed our stay at the Phaethon, but to be honest we would choose an adult’s only hotel in the future. We may try the Pioneer Beach next door (the sister hotel to the Phaethon, but only because it is an adults only hotel) so we can still pop in and see our old friends at the Phaethon. If you have kids though.. then you and they will have a great time at the Phaethon !

Suggestions for the hotel. :

1.I know the tribute acts are used as an enticer for residents to come to the Bingo and the Main Event, but what about putting them on the veranda near the Atrium bar where adults can enjoy their skills and still go down for the later events. During our time there members of the Animation team did just this and provided an excellent performance of current songs and even a local ‘Hank Marvin’ played to a packed veranda made up mainly of adults. Try it at least!

2.This is the first hotel that I have had to pay for wi-fi. Most of the local bars have free wi-fi so why can’t you provide it?

3.Trying to have a meal at the Esperides Restaurant veranda would have been lovely, but you have to put up with people smoking. I think it’s every person’s right to smoke if they wish, but I don’t smoke, and would have liked a little section maybe set aside where I could have sat and not eaten a mouthful of food with a mouthful of smoke.

That's about it... I hope you have found this report useful. If you have then please click the 'helpful' button provided by Trip Advisor and print it off to take with you.

Any questions just email them to me...Have a great holiday !!

We were made to feel very welcome when we arrived at the Louis Phaethon Beach and very quickly escorted to our room. Very nice rooms (we were on the third floor), sea view. Food was very good (main meals got a bit repetitive after 14 days, although plenty else to choose from so not a problem). Drinks were very flowing ,with my wife trying every cocktail available over the fortnight. Pool area spotless with plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas to choose from. Bar staff excellent (not used to people waiting on us hand and foot but got used to it after a while). Many thanks to all the staff (especially Miya) who ran around tirelessly. They are a credit to the hotel. We found the animation team to be to animated for our liking, some of them really not having the attitude to be in the entertainment business...so to sum up the hotel is a fantastic place to stay for a break, especially how large the complex is. No queues , always plenty to eat,drink..so all in all a very good package. See you next year!!

Had a lovely time at this hotel with my dad and my sister. Had room 1009 which had an amazing sea view especially at sunset. Food great, lots of variety, and Chinese for lunch was awesome (must've put on a stone). Drinks very good too, and a waiter service in the main bar was a touch. Couldn't fault MOST of the staff.. However found the entertainment team to be quite rude to myself and my sister, looking us up and down as we came in for dinner which was very unnerving when trying to enjoy our holiday. Also after the first 2 nights of them fart arsing around on stage talking to each other instead of entertaining we decided to go out in the evenings. Overall a great hotel, I would recommend it.

Room Tip: Pick a room with a sea view, well worth the little extra cost
