Paphos Gardens Holiday Resort

Just come to the end of our 11 day stay at Paphos Gardens in the self catering section Mimoza, and here's our experience:

The Good:
Location, only 10 minutes by foot to harbour, 30 minutes to Tomb of the Kings, lots of good eating places nearby. Bryn the Porter from Nottingham is really helpful, and friendly. Pool area (Oasis) is quiet. Resort supermarket is well stocked with friendly and helpful staff.

The Bad:
Where to start.....the apartment was very basic, with only one plug socket meaning that you can't really self cater, as you can't cook much. Cleaning was non-exisitent, only had a maid for half of the days we were here, and all she did was make the bed, we didn't get clean sheets during our stay or bath mat, the towels were changed after a week! The bathroom floor wasn't cleaned during our stay and no surfaces were wiped down - all in all, pretty awful. The shower is either boiling hot or freezing cold and changes every couple of minutes, the tap got scorching and I burnt myself on it, with no water pressure. In the bathroom there was no hot water available in the sink.

The apartment backs onto a busy road and there are hotel staff in the apartments in this block, who party every night banging doors and screaming, when we complained after nearly a week of no sleep, to a very unhelpful and rude receptionist - Tosca, I think, we were told that there was nothing the hotel could do, and that maybe the police will come if they are really that noisy!!

Sunbed cushions around the Oasis pool were really dirty. Food and drink was very over priced and the food from the pool area was awful, two baileys were EUR 10, circa £8.

Thoughts on Paphos itself:
Overall quite nice but quite expensive, partly due to the strengthening of the EUR recently, but expect to pay EUR 45 for a meal for two, and EUR 8 for two drinks.

Restaurants - Koh i noor Indian restaurant just near the hotel is fantastic, with really nice staff and great food, Les Amis give enormous portions of good quality food and nice staff, Phivos along the way to the harbour is nice for greek food. Didn't go there but apparently the Pagoda Chinese isn't very good and is expensive.

Bars - Friendship bar near resort is good for footie, and a really nice man who runs it, Evis is good for live shows - Blues Brothers particularly good, and John the barman is very nice. Six Bells along the way to the harbour does great Brandy Sours and the owners are lovely.

Attractions: Tomb of the Kings a bit of a let down. Mosaics are pretty impressive. Walk along the beach to the harbour is a nice walk, and in the other direction too. We did a jeep safari to Akamas with Evis, and the driver, Luis did seem to be after tips by telling sob stories, and on reflection it wasn't worth the EUR 40 we paid, as it was just a day in a jeep basically!

If we came again we'd stay at either Athena Beach Hotel or Almyria, they looked the nicest!!

This hotel also has apartments which are around the hotel building in a garden setting, ( hence the name). The apartment we had was just across from the hotel reception, but some were a reasonable walk away. Being in an apartment, we could use the hotel facilities which were v.good without being OTT. Staff were helpful and friendly. Entertainment was a bit limited, but it was the start of their season, so should improve.
The hotel is situated an easy 15 minute walk outside Kato Pathos, pretty flat, but pavements a bit rough in places.
We were self catering, ( in name only) as we ate out. The meals looked ok in the hotel, but we didn`t try them in the evening. There are plenty of restaurauts about but we recomment, Adelaida, Brothers and others in the same row on the main road into Kato Pathos.

Please see my photos and make up your own mind...

We visited the apartment complex with three children. The pool areas where clean and good but the apatment itself was in need of a complete refurbishment. Not only was it old in decor and furniture, it was dirty and dangerous. Entertainment and the children's play area were well below standard and inadequate.

We were met by the porter who took us to our very spacious and well kitted apartment ( Full kitchen, TV with BBC and SKY NEWS channels, CD player, hairdryer, microwave), you will need to bring a tea towel and cloth for washing up though. The only minor irks were that our particular balcony (in Ibiscus block) didn't really catch the sun and that the wardrobe could have done with a low shelf. The cleaners came every day, were friendly, and missed you out if you had the 'do not disturb' sign on the door. I found it to be pretty immaculate and they even swept the pavements every morning!
Food was varied (themed buffet in eves) and reasonably inexpensive. Other restaurants and drinks were similarly priced to UK because of the euro. All staff helpful especially Maria on the bar.
Paphos is abundant in restaurants but good ones near the hotel are 'Kor-i-nor' (Indian),' Monty's' in the plaza (best REAL fry up) and Phivos (for Meze). Les Amis was always busy but we didn't try it this time.
Entertainment is on at the hotel most evenings, even out of season, including traditional dancing, and a parrot show.
Bus service is good ( stops in front of Alexander on main rd and across from the Aloe) and shopping includes Debenhams, Peacocks and a small M & S.
Do beware of touts selling scratchcards near the harbour though.

Went to the Paphos Gardens for our first stay in February and we enjoyed it very much.Appartment was lovely and it was like home from home with ironing board and iron, full sized fridge freezer, full sized cooker for any one who wanted to keep costs down. Indoor pool was lovely and warm for those who were not brave enough to use outside pool.Staff were very helpful, we will certainly go back, heres to the next time.

This hotel is gr8 , we have stayed here twice and will be using it every time we are in cyprus until we emmigrate pernamently to Pissouri cyprus in dec 08.

The staff cant help you anymore if they tried , always smilling and really like you to enjoy your stay.

The restaurant is clean , and the food menu is changed daily, which if you have fussy kids there is always plenty of options. The service is self service at breakfast and at night , so you really do get value for money, you eat what you want. Lunch is waiter service but again the plates are full.

The hotel do entertainment nights that are anything from singers , to kareokee, quiz bingo ect ect . So travelling alone is gr8 as well you soon meet new friends.

There is a bar in the main lobby area which serves drinks all day and you can order bar food all day too.
You dont have to leave a tip but the service is really good a few euros is not a gr8 deal or even your small change, which we did every night.

The pool outside is clean and also thier is an indoor heated pool and other pampering services available, sunbed, sauna, massage services.

You are only a short walk from the beach and all the ammenities and if you dont want to eat in the hotel ..wow some superb restaurants close by as well, but with the excellent restaurant at the hotel you dont have to go out but no matter where you eat , I can honestly say you will never go hungry.

The rooms are spacious and clean with fresh towels daily, there is a tv which does have afew english channels and a kids channel , so thats gr8 to keep the kids happy at night and a kids club is also at the hotel, although i have never used this service as my daughters a teenager.

PLACES CLOSE TO THE HOTEL.

Shopping is a must in paphos and the hotel will call you a taxi if you dont drive, but it really is only a 20min scenic walk to DEBENHAMS, NEXT, LEVIS all the shops you get back in the uk and more . MARKET EVERYTHING YOU NEED. And also bars restaurants and tourist shops along the way , and for those with kids yes Macdonalds and KFC can also be found.

Scuba diving in paphos is farely priced and scuba schools can be found 15mins from the hotel in the main town area.
There is Horse riding in paphos and is advertised about the town but we chose scuba diving, being disabled i thought i would not be able to do this , but the instructors were gr8 and i had a wail of a time, next visit at easter i taking an underwater camera , so watch this space!!

For the more adventurous..The Troodos Mountains are only 1hrs drive from the hotel . On the way up to the top there are lots of stops for drinks and food on the way up , also a bus does run from paphos town for those that dont wish to drive. The scenery on the way up the mountain is breathe taking, you would think you were in switzerland not cyprus, where else can you go skiing snowboarding and throwing snow balls in the morning and come down to beautiful sunshine and beaches in the afternoon.

10min drive from the hotel there is a Mini golf , Go carting , and a water slide park..( all clearly signed so you wont get lost ) just basically follow signs for airport.

Pissouri is 15mins drive and a gr8 place to go see , the locals are very welcoming and friendly and the village has shops and bars. A gr8 mix of ex pats and cypriot people live here , so if you want to no anything about where to go then just ask.

Limasol is 30mins away from the hotel and again shops , beaches, and beautiful scenery.

You are close to the A6 ( cyrpus motorway ) or the B6 ( scenic rd )
I counted 12 cars on the A6 as we drove to limasol and on the B6 rd well if you see more than 10 cars you travelling during rush hour, but you wont count past 15 cars during that time either. So roads very safe and there are plenty of side stops so you can take pictures and enjoy the scenery.

Another gr8 thing about the hotel is you are so close to the airport should you want to do a day trip or 2 out ..Eygpt, Turkey and Israel is also an option as the hotel is not expensive, so what you save you could use on other things.
