“lovely hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 11, 2009

We stayed here in August and boy was it hot!!! The air con in the hotel is not the best and won't work unless you put the key in the slot so if you have been out for the day you come home to an oven. The hotel and staff are lovely though and the public areas very clean and the food very acceptable considering they are catering for so many. The only downside I would say is that the waiting staff are too keen to empty the dining room at closing time , for example there was a candle lit dinner evening and we were sat outside finishing our bottle of wine when the waitress came along and said "do you mind" and took the candle away! its the same every night and we felt a little rushed. The hotel have a happy hour and you must try the Mojito's -- absolutely divine. Another thing is to go out and watch the sunset from the beach it is a beautiful sight before having a drink in the beach bar before dinner. Another point to mention... don't book any trips through Thomson, I went on the day trip to Cairo and through Thomson the cost was 294 euro, so I went into Paphos and booked the same trip for 209 euro, when the bus picked us up we were all on the same coach and same trip but I had saved a lot of money, by the way if you want to see the pyramids etc , please go on this trip it is superbly organised , every minute of the day was amazing even though I had to get up at 5.30 am and didn't get back until midnight it was truly a day to remember .
I would go back to Athena but maybe at a different time of year as August is far too hot

The photographs in the brochure are misleading in a negative way. The Superior room we had booked was genuinely of a lower standard than a Travelodge or Premier Inn. This important point aside though, the balcony was spacious (beware, lights go out at 10pm). The one thing that made this holiday so enjoyable for my fiancee, daughter and I was the quality of service received from staff throughout the hotel. Many are eastern european, some are cypriot, some from the UK. Having read other reviews about poor service and inferior staff, I can honestly say that what we found was 'when you are respectful to others, they are respectful back'. We booked B&B but benefited from an upgrade to Half Board - the food throughout the week was first-class, a wide selection and friendly waiting staff. The beach is small and too rocky, and each day full of seaweed so be careful if booking a holiday with young children who may wish to swim in the sea. The pools though are good enough. If you book this hotel, upon arrival, prior to taking your luggage to your room, politely ask reception staff if you can view your room first. This will stop upset and disappointment - when you have the keys, you're stuck! A nice hotel, good staff and nice setting as long as you have a sea view room. The 'mountain' view rooms are situated on the rather busy main road - and the mountains are miles away.

As the title says this was our 4th visit to this hotel in August and yet again we were not
disappointed. Yes the reviews will always be mixed obviously depending on personal views, hope the following helps..
Food option - yes dont deny that this can be repetative but there is something for everyones individual tastes from roasts to salads to pasta the choice is endless.
Decor - yes this hotel is in need of re-decoration in certain areas but dont most hotels abroad? The Athena is always kept very clean in public areas and to me this is more important.
Pool area- everywhere was hosed down every morning without fail and I never found the actual pool to be dirty as mentioned in a previous review (and have never done so in previous years).
Bedrooms - always very clean - yes the maid service wasnt always early in a morning and there were a couple of occasions that we had to ask for pool towels as none had been left in our room but this was soon recified by asking at reception. Can't fault the cleaning, linen changed once while we were there (stayed for one week) and there were always clean bath towels left daily, what more do you want afterall most of us only use our accomodation to sleep and shower at night ready for the evening!

Entertainment - this was ok,but to be honest didnt really stay in the hotel much at night as there are a large number of pubs outside the hotel within walking distance, but again the entertainment was no worse or better then any other I have seen at other hotels.

It is expensive in Cyprus now ,there is no denying that so if you can take the option of the half board then do so as this will save you alot of money.

We love Paphos and would visit there every year if we could afford it, so I would say to anyone if you havent been to Cyprus before give this hotel a try you won't be disappointed!

p.s stayed at the Rodos Palladium in Rhodes last year which was supposed to be a five star rating, Athena Beach is 100% better in our view!

Expected far more from a four star hotel. Had a problem right from the start when we arrived late at night. Booked a triple room and enquired before hand that the third bed would NOT be a put me up but a proper bed. However, when we arrived we were put into a very small room with a put me bed pushed against the patio doors (therefore could not open them). Our son being a big 16 year old was too tall and heavy for such a bed. At Reception they were not too please and not very accommodating to our reuest of a proper bed. Even the Manager was not very helpful and we we told to suffer the night and come back in the morning to see our rep... I did and after a great lot of argument - which you really don't need on your holidays, we were given a much better room and a proper bed for my son. However during the rest of our holidays this was a common complaint with many families with teenagers sharing their rooms. A lot of families were not as lucky as us. So.... Do not expect a proper bed as a third - however much you are told before you book this will not be the case at this hotel. After this initial disruption our holiday was OK but I still found the Hotel not meeting four star status. The A/C turned off as soon as you left your room, which meant on your return the room was very hot and it took a time to cool down. At certain times of the week when the hotel was at its fullest you had a problem getting a sun lounger unless you put your towel down before breakfast - which was a pain. The Chambermaids took ages to do the rooms and kept you hanging about a lot. Evening entertainment was not very good very second rate.
We have been to Cyprus before and stayed in Protaras at the Sunrise Beach Hotel which was Brilliant, if we returned this is where we would go for a far more relaxing and and a much better standard of hotel.

I stayed at the Athena Beach hotel the same period as the person who left the last review and I have to say I couldn't disagree more! I stayed there with my fiance and my 5 year old daughter and we had the best time! We've stayed in numerous all-inclusive hotels and the food there was the best we've ever had in one of these hotels! The breakfast was freshly prepared and the choice was unbelievable, something for everybody. The staff who prepared the lunch were wonderful, really nice people who couldn't do enough for you and again, the choice was amazing; roasts, spag bol, fish, pizzas, lovely salad bar, burgers and the best chips I have ever tasted. Again, everything was freshly cooked and the staff couldn't do enough for you. The hotel was really nice and the pools were great, although the old man who 'oversaw' the waterslide was useless and a bully, we had a number of run-ins with him as he didn't watch the slide properly and chose to shout at the little ones and let the teenagers get away with murder! But all that aside, the location was perfect and the staff worked really hard to cater for all your needs. The beach is sand and shingle, but really nice for a paddle and so beautiful to look at every day while you're sunbathing. The harbour has to be visited, though don't believe all the reviews, it's a good 30 minute walk along a dimly-lit promenade. Don't get me wrong, if we'd been a couple on our own, it would have been a perfect romantic stroll but with a 5 year old it was a bit too long and dark. The Poco-loco mexican and the Jasmine Garden restaurants opposite the hotel were excellent, as was the Rib Shack, turning left from hotel and a few minutes along. In the harbour, Chloe's 3 floor chinese restaurant was the best chinese food I've ever had, although you had to book a table in advance and people were queuing to get in! The bus from outside the hotel came every 15-20 minutes and was much better than getting one of the piranha taxis that waited in the bus stop outside the hotel. All in all, we had such a brilliant holiday; the hotel was lovely, as was Paphos, and we'd recommend the place to anyone! Lovely memories of a lovely place :o)

We have just returned from a 2 week break with our teenagers. The hotel is pleasant, clean and extremely nice. The staff are helpful and polite. The pool, setting and private beach are heaven. So what's the catch ? Nothing really - its just the people (Brits) and the food. Basically you need to remember that you may have booked a decent superior room like we did, but there are plenty of other cheaper rooms full of swearing brits, wearing football shirts to dinner, vests to breakfast and so on. Sadly the food caters for these people too. Cheap ready meal type fodder, nothing of any quality and everything the cheapest of the cheap. The recession forced us into this market but we felt out of place. You really do get what you pay for ! No offence intended but it costs nothing to make an effort and dress for dinner. The spa treatment was fantastic.

Stayed 11nights half board and could not fault a thing. The staff are excellent in all areas and very hard working especially in the restaurant - we thoroughly enjoyed the barbq and cyprus nights when the tables were set outside around the pools and gardens. There was a happy hour in the bar from 7pm til 8pm then from 11pm til midnight at the beach bar the beer and coffee was half price.
We had lunch a few times at the pool bar 4.90euros for a large chicken kebab with pitta and salad which I thought was good value.
The rooms are very comfortable with tea/coffee/kettle and a fridge for your use. Bathrobes and slippers are provided and there were 4 beach towels in the room.
We had a great holiday but would in future would go in May and October as it was too hot for strolling along the seafront - having said that, given half a chance I would be back now if I could!!
