“Very Basic But staff and food Very good”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 14, 2009

We have recently returned from Paphos, we found the resort itself clean but very expensive. Not a lot to do and the transport system is hopeless if you want to get about. Most people hire a car but we don't so were very restricted. The hotel itself is in a good location for the harbour, downhill going but uphill coming back but manageable. The staff were friendly and the food was plentiful and varied. We chose this hotel because they had an offer on for Half board and we were glad we did as everything in Paphos is very expensive, mostly due to the euro but even if the pound had been strong it was still pricy. We paid 5 euro for 2 small cans of pop and same for 1 small bottle of water and a half of lager in the bars. Cheaper bars can be found further back nearer the hotel but not much going on. We were bored, we did all the ruins in the first couple of days. The market it useless not worth the trip. We would not go to cyprus again. Our apartment was very spacious but very very basic and the furniture was old and tired and stained. The balcony is literally 2 1/2 ft wide and was over the bars so proved to be very noisy at night thanks to karioke in all the bars. The pools are great but sunbeds are taken quickly mostly by sunbathers which is a pain because there are 2 sun terraces for those who just want to fry. I often had the pool to myself which was great. The Large glass windows of the games room don't appear to be safety glass as an elderly bloke leaned his chair against one of them and it shattered, we were in the games room at the time and the glass fell in, luckily we were not too close but 2 minutes earlier I had been taking a shot at pool table and could have been sliced. The old chap escaped unharmed. The glass was replaced but again I think it is a serious health and safety risk especially if kids ran around, if a pool ball hit the window it would again shatter. The rails on the balconies are not safe, ours wasnt properly secured and they are horizontol metal bars on top of a small wall which any child could easily climb on or over - parents beware. It isn't really a hotel for kids though and the majority of clients were middle to elderly in age.

After reading the reviews on the Nereus before we left we were all a bit apprehensive about the hotel after arriving in Paphos we left people off at Great Big hotels on the Beach these hotels looked Fabulous then we arrived at the Nereus to say I was shocked was an understatement but appearances are definetely misceiving hotel not great to look at.

Reception was great there was 20 of us travelling all ages rooms were basic but were very clean indeed.

Breakfast was great to good choice for everyone and good timings as well.

Dinner was fine have to say some nights choices were very limited and we eat out twice during our week due to choices on menu, the other 5 nights the food was good really tasty staff in restaurant were very attentive and looked after us very well.

Bar was great entertainment on most nights or in Papa George Bar across the street from Hotel this Bar is great drink really cheap and staff were excellent

Bedroom at the Hotel was very clean but have to say Beds were rock hard would have to say I think they need to invest in new matresses for the beds otherwise they were fine some in our group complained that the fans in bathrooms were not working.

Have to day overall hotel was in a great location 5 minutes to harbour and some great restaurants only 2 minutes away we would come back to this hotel only downside I would say is the bloody cats there was about 3-4 cats roaming around reception not to impressed about this

We visited the Nereus over Easter with my parents. When the coach dropped us off, we looked at the front and thought "OMG, what have we come to?" as, to be honest, it looked a bit of a dump. By dinner on the third night, we were saying that we'd definitely go back, and that was the opinion of many first time guests. Many other guests had been back time and time again.

The main problem with the Nereus is the decor. Its the hotel's 20th birthday this year, and its looking its age. However, if you can get past that, its a great hotel. Its very clean, my Dad always gets up super early and he said there was always an army of cleaners at work. We were only there a week, and we had our bedding changed once mid-week, and our towels were changed as we wanted them. There were absolutely no problems with cleanliness.

The location was excellent. Its on 'bar street' so about 2mins from the bars if you're there to party, 5mins from the seafront with all the restaurants, shops and bars down there (perfect for a walk at lunchtime or after dinner), and ten minutes from the harbour area, so there's always somewhere to go. We didn't use the buses, but there was a bus stop about 5mins walk away.

The rooms were a bit tired but spacious enough - there were 3 adults in our room and we had plenty of room. The beds are quite hard, especially the camp bed I was in, but we asked for an extra mattress and then it was fine. Storage was limited, especially in terms of draws. Our bathroom had obviously been re-furbished, and would have been a good size, but the sink was absolutely massive, on a large cabinet, so it probably halved the available space in the bathroom. The two negatives about the room were the fact that all 3 of us couldn't fit on the balcony, and we faced the street, and the locals had a bad habit of beeping their horns at 3am!

The service was excellent, you were always greeted with a smile and staff helped you as much as they could. We were half board, and the food definitely exceeded our expectations, as every meal we had there was tasty. There was either a variety of salads or soup to start, and then 3 main meals, with a good choice of sweets. However, I was not aware of a great deal of vegetarian choices, so veggies be warned.

The people in the self catering flats could eat there for 8 euros 50, which was the best value we saw anywhere. The drinks prices were also the cheapest we found, very unusual for a hotel, and if you didn't finish your bottle of wine at dinner they'd put it away for you for the next night.

What was nice was that there was a mixed age group in the hotel - pensioners, families with children, young people on girlie holidays, families with adult children, and all seemed to like it. I'm disabled and I'd say it was fairly accessible, but it would probably be awkward for people with no mobility. The entertainment was good, especially the Misfits/Blues Brothers and Costas' quiz on a Wednesday night. There was also a pub attached to the hotel where you could go if you didn't fancy the entertainment but wanted the same prices.

All in all, the family feel of the hotel made for a relaxed atmosphere and I'd definitely go back1

GREAT STAFF, GOOD FOOD AND ROOMS VERY CLEAN. Been going to this hotel for a while now and have booked to go back in late May and early October. Have been to the five star and bigger hotels and they cannot match the Nereus in Food and the great staff. Please do not take notice of the bad reports go and find out for your selves and see

My friend and I arrived late at night in hot sticky conditions and were in desperate need of some air conditioning as soon as possible! Upon arrival at the check in desk we were allocated an apartment (we booked a twin room) not actually in the hotel but across the car park and down a dark and dingy corridor, not great for two lone females! Not feeling safe we asked to be moved to a new room inside the hotel that same night. At first we were told it was fully booked until a room became 'available'. Great news! Although now inside the hotel we were greeted with a nasty little surprise of a cockroach hence we asked to be moved again but were only offered our original room so we had to take it. I found the staff to be rather rude and unhelpful, unwilling to provide any assistance and chose the best method was to ignore us. In the end we stayed in the apartment for the week, air conditioning working but only in the bedroom. Yes it was a nice apartment for the money, but just not really what we had wanted. The other facilities of the hotel are adequate although the pools are not really large enough for the amount of rooms. The breakfast was entirely disappointing, not enough choice and served in a room that was about 30 degrees constantly. Location of the hotel is excellent, close to the beach and town and plenty of good restaurants nearby. One really good thing about the hotel was the car hire it offered. For 25€ a day you could hire a newish car with AC and really explore the island. Would i go back to Paphos? Yes. Would i go back to Nereus? No

We went to cyprus to attend a wedding there was 8 of us,and we wanted somewhere not to near the bride and groom as we were there to surprise them, we find the nereus
very good, the staff was very helpful rooms were cleaned every day. There was plently of food, papageorge the pub next door belongs to the hotel and is a nice place to have a drink. When we went it was their easter and we were given a candle to light at midnight it was lovely to join in with the celebrationns and the hotel put on soup when we got back we all feel that the nereus was very good value our only fault was a trip we went on booked with our travel agent it was the island tour but we did not have a lot of time in the towns we went to but this was not the hotel fault

Family runs the hotel; highly professional in all respects and very hands-on - obviously know the business inside out. Likewise the staff: well-selected, well-trained, capable and full of goodwill. Rooms well-equipped, well-serviced; and spotless - somewhat compact but well laid-out and all we needed. People write that the hotel `needs a makeover' even though it has recently been redecorated. They'd say the same of every other hotel in eastern Europe: the dark wood and heavy furnishings are unfamiliar and not to our current taste. Food outstanding: wide choice; well-presented - as good as we've found in 30 years. Waiters eager to please. 75% of guests there (in Feb.) were re-bookings and the majority retired couples. I took opinions and could not find a soul with a complaint - quite the reverse. Recommended without reserve
