The Elysium Hotel in Paphos is a superb choice for a holiday on Cyprus, but there’s a problem, so read to the end.
The Elysium enjoys a quiet position right by the sea; there’s a small beach and it’s a pleasant walk from the hotel to Kato Paphos harbour along the new promenade. The pool area and gardens are clean and well kept and there are plenty of sun beds and parasols everywhere. This hotel is ideal for anyone with mobility difficulties as there are ramps in the gardens and pool area.
Hotel architecture is outstanding with many classical decorative features. In one building there’s an atrium with mosaics where ancient amphorae discovered during hotel construction are tastefully displayed. It’s so well done you’d think you were at the British Museum in London.
Rooms are spotless and spacious with good bathrooms. Hotel staff of all categories are pleasant and helpful. Full marks to all, especially the young pool attendants who run to help with parasols.
It is therefore with regret I must mention a problem. Small birds, sparrows, congregate round the breakfast terrace, not just one or two but flocks of them. Any guest leaving their breakfast unguarded, even for a moment, can be certain that 10-15 birds will have been on it before he/she returns. Some birds fly in through the hotel doors to feast directly from the buffet. This is a health hazard! Birds also sit on chair backs and do poo, the guest returns to the chair leans back and gets wet bird poo on their shirt or blouse. I saw this happen. It was impossible to enjoy a lunch snack at the pool bar because of the hordes of birds over everything. Feeding the birds elsewhere, use of ultrasound or gels on outside surfaces does not solve the problem. I have stayed at other hotels with an identical bird problem; on return visits the problem has been eliminated.
The hotel only serves expensive bottled water imported from the United Kingdom at lunch or dinner; no water from Cyprus is made available. The level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has now passed 400 p.p.m. for the first time ever. Catastrophic global warming is a fact. The Elysium contributes to this by serving water transported thousands of miles from the UK, even though there are many good bottled waters produced on Cyprus. In silent protest we stopped eating at the hotel’s restaurants. This led to the pleasant discovery of a little Cypriot tavern, The Farm House Tavern, in the Tombs of the Kings Road (the main road) only a few minutes walk from the hotel. Here my companion and I enjoyed tasty traditional Cypriot food together with local wines and mineral water in convivial surroundings. I have written a separate review of this restaurant.
