“A splendid hotel – with a problem”
Reviewed May 24, 2013

The Elysium Hotel in Paphos is a superb choice for a holiday on Cyprus, but there’s a problem, so read to the end.
The Elysium enjoys a quiet position right by the sea; there’s a small beach and it’s a pleasant walk from the hotel to Kato Paphos harbour along the new promenade. The pool area and gardens are clean and well kept and there are plenty of sun beds and parasols everywhere. This hotel is ideal for anyone with mobility difficulties as there are ramps in the gardens and pool area.
Hotel architecture is outstanding with many classical decorative features. In one building there’s an atrium with mosaics where ancient amphorae discovered during hotel construction are tastefully displayed. It’s so well done you’d think you were at the British Museum in London.
Rooms are spotless and spacious with good bathrooms. Hotel staff of all categories are pleasant and helpful. Full marks to all, especially the young pool attendants who run to help with parasols.
It is therefore with regret I must mention a problem. Small birds, sparrows, congregate round the breakfast terrace, not just one or two but flocks of them. Any guest leaving their breakfast unguarded, even for a moment, can be certain that 10-15 birds will have been on it before he/she returns. Some birds fly in through the hotel doors to feast directly from the buffet. This is a health hazard! Birds also sit on chair backs and do poo, the guest returns to the chair leans back and gets wet bird poo on their shirt or blouse. I saw this happen. It was impossible to enjoy a lunch snack at the pool bar because of the hordes of birds over everything. Feeding the birds elsewhere, use of ultrasound or gels on outside surfaces does not solve the problem. I have stayed at other hotels with an identical bird problem; on return visits the problem has been eliminated.
The hotel only serves expensive bottled water imported from the United Kingdom at lunch or dinner; no water from Cyprus is made available. The level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has now passed 400 p.p.m. for the first time ever. Catastrophic global warming is a fact. The Elysium contributes to this by serving water transported thousands of miles from the UK, even though there are many good bottled waters produced on Cyprus. In silent protest we stopped eating at the hotel’s restaurants. This led to the pleasant discovery of a little Cypriot tavern, The Farm House Tavern, in the Tombs of the Kings Road (the main road) only a few minutes walk from the hotel. Here my companion and I enjoyed tasty traditional Cypriot food together with local wines and mineral water in convivial surroundings. I have written a separate review of this restaurant.

Superb hotel, all the facilities on hand, amazing food, incredibly helpful staff - including sorting out getting our passports from the hotel on the other side of Cyprus where we forgot them.

If you plan to dive, do check out the on site Cydive team - unfailingly helpful dive company who went out of their way to accommodate complex group requirements.

It gets better with each visit .Even tho Cyprus economy has had problems the Hotel Elysium has kept up their standards and probably improved their customer care. The hotel as always was immaculate, the staff as always attentive to our every needs Food and service in all the restaurants was delicious. But I really must comment on the warm welcome each and every member of staff dish out on arrival. Waiting to go back again.

Room Tip: West facing rooms are shaded in the afternoon but you can still have a wonderful view of the sunset

This is a lovely hotel, defiantly one of the best I have stayed in. The rooms are lovely and the beach is superb. There is just one thing that niggled at me, call me petty, but when the rooms cost what they do, you might expect cheap internet. That is my only criticism of this place, the internet cost is simply extortionate, which i just felt was rubbing salt into wounds a little. However don't let this put you off going, it is a lovely hotel, just don't bother bringing a lap top if you want the internet unless you are prepared to foot a large bill!!!!

Having revisited this hotel after a break of a year, we were slightly disappointed to find that
certain standards have slipped somewhat, which can only be expected due to Cyprus experiencing their financial difficulties. It was nice to see some familiar faces, but quite a number
of staff are of Russian which cater for the massive influx of Russian holidaymakers who obviously
have the money to spend. The hotel is looking tired, and basic amenities are suffering. e.g.
air conditioning unit was inoperative due to the filter being totally blocked, & had to be changed. The in room safe was in operative due to flat batteries and also had to be changed. Waste bins
in the room were not emptied also tea and coffee were not replenished. Still a very nice hotel, but the management have taken their eye of the ball.

My wife and I visited the hotel for a couple of days in May 2013 just for vacation reasons. We selected this hotel based on internet research. Our goal was to relax for a couple of days as well as having a base for driving around and explore this area of the island.

We enjoyed our stay very much. The hotel is nice and clean with a great pool area. Staff is friendly and always available to help.

The hotel is located just at the outskirts of Paphos city close to a main road leading to the North of the island. However, the vicinity itself is not very attractive but you can drive to nicer places just within minutes.

The restaurants (we did not test them all) are good, especially the breakfast buffet offers a wide variety to choose from. Food and drinks are a little bit overpriced but not unusual for a hotel of this quality.

Overall a very good value for your money.

Room Tip: if you need some more privacy there are rooms with a private plunge pool available. However, the poo...

We came here following reading tripadvisor reviews of the hotel. Every word was true, so I won't repeat the comments. The staff were so helpful and friendly. The breakfast was great with lovely fresh fruit, smoked salmon and, to cap it all, a glass of Brut to start the day! However, don't arrive for breakfast later than 9.45 a.m. They really do start clearing it away at 10.30 a.m.! The buffet dinner was also delightful - especially the mouth-watering selection of desserts!

It's a large hotel in extensive grounds. I don't know how it would feel when fully booked with lots of children milling around.(However, there are special facilities and activities for them.)

May was a great time to come. The hotel was practically empty and it was not too hot. Just make sure you understand the air conditioning controls in your room. On the first day we had it on hot and got roasted! However, when we contacted reception, they sent someone up very quickly to check and explain things. Good workout room and free WiFi.

I had some questions prior to arrival and received prompt replies from the hotel via email. The room we got was as booked (non smoking, king sized bed on the 4th floor.) A good sized room although ideally we would have preferred a separate shower unit as well as the bathtub. We'd stay here again.

Room Tip: 4th Floor with sea view. Room 4022 or close,
