“Small and Sacred”

Reviewed April 10, 2013

A small catacomb on the road down to Kato Paphos has special charm as it is used by locals and tourists alike, only small and no cost to enter, this shrine is unique with tree of fertility growing above.

Despite the ravages of time the work done here has lasted for centuries- sometimes the terrain was a bit hard going, especially with an elderly mother to watch!

at the top is a tree where people have hung hankies or material to pray for someones well being. Go down the steps the the chapel at the bottom, be careful as narrow stairway, mind your head, and can get water in bottom of it. But well worth a visit.

The site, on the side of the road travelling north from Kato Paphos, is marked by a tree which people believe will cure their ills if they hang an item of their clothing in its branches. It is covered in scraps of all types of material and plastic.
There are steep, dark steps down to see the catacombs which are small but appears to be still used as a place of worship. They are free to visit and a contribution to the upkeep is justifiably requested. Take care on the steps.

This is a small site that feels a little unloved in spite of the many strips of cloth tied to the tree above the entrance. It feels a little churlish to describe any site of such antiquity as 'average' but it would probably take a guide to explain the significance of what you are seeing to bring it all home as there is nothing to read. Beware of invisible (so still you can't see it) holy water in the deepest section! Walk slowly...
