The Melania is one of the old type tavernas. We ate there about 5 times last time we visited Paphos and after the first time was very sorry we had not used it before as we have been going to Paphos for 21yrs and had always passsed it by . We were given a nice welcome when we walked in and were not waiting long before our order was taken. The food is delicious especially the moussaka and stifado and the portions are big. After the first time we didn"t order a starter so we could do the main course justice. The wine was also much cheaper than most other restaurants. We are going back for 3wks in October and will be dining there again. Can"t wait. Would highly recommend this restaurant.

We ate at Melania every night except Sunday, when the restaurant closed. Being February the evenings were a bit chilly anyway, and we also had a bit of a cold snap, so to sit by Matheos’ log fire and gorge on his wonderful food was sheer bliss.

The portions were large and when one night we chose the stifado, the amount placed in front of each of us would normally have fed a pair of hungry navvies. Having small appetites we were unable to do the meal justice so Matheos packed the leftovers in foil containers which we took back to our apartment intending to have them for lunch later. However, we were about to return home and didn’t have time for a sit-down meal, but I can report that stifado makes the most wonderful sandwich filling!

His lamb kleftiko was historic – I’ve never had better – and if you want to eat lamb chops which taste as good, rumour has it you have to send to the Shetland Isles for your meat. It’s all to do with the feed: in Cyprus the lambs feed on the wild herbs, and in the Shetlands they are flavoured by the heather.

One regret was that we felt unable to face the mezze: we watched in awe as one couple worked their way through about 18 dishes and they seemed to thoroughly enjoy every one. I was told later that you don’t have to clear every dish: you just have a few morsels from each (unless you are a 20 stone construction worker, that is).

Greek hospitality is legendary: if you go to a taverna a second time you are greeted as a friend, and if you go every night for a week you are almost part of the family. At the end of a meal there is almost invariably a little extra treat “on the house”, ranging from plates of fresh fruit to types of baklava, and sometimes a liqueur or brandy. Matheos also treated us to a home made sweetmeat which he called “lizard”, a type of crisp pastry soaked in honey.

We would thoroughly recommend Melania for food, ambience, friendliness and value – this is hospitality at its finest. The restaurant is situated on the Tombs of the Kings Road between Kings Gardens and Ikaria Village, reasonably handy for Capital Coast resort or the Venus Beach Hotel – just start walking towards Coral Bay and it’s a few hundred yards on the right hand side, sufficient to sharpen your appetite for the feast ahead.
