“It really isn't that bad at all..”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 16, 2009

First off, i can tell you that this is going to be long. So i apologise for the length. But i want to say that I THOROUGHLY ENJOYED my holiday. There were things that irritated me, but i would definately go there on holiday again.
Also, Yes..the Valana is a 2 Star hotel - many people I spoke to over there claimed they didn't know this, but if you actually look at your holiday details it does tell you this. If you want a 4 or 5 Star hotel, then go and make sure you've booked for one and pay the price for one. (Sorry, Rant over..back to the review)

I stayed here at the beginning of July for 2 weeks, a package holiday with Olympic Holidays and Eurocypria Airlines.

Upon arrival, we checked in and went to our room. (Number 131 - 3rd Floor) We did have slight trouble opening the door but realised we were making it much more complicated than it was. After this, I had a good look around after reading previous reviews and my only complaint is that I think they need to check the cutlery as one of the forks was bent and you couldn't use it but it wasn't really a big deal if i'm honest. Apart from that, the rooms were fine - some people moaned about their showers being slow etc. but ours was fine. In my opinion, an additional piece of kitchen equipment would be handy as there is only a 2 ring electric cooker, but we ate in mostly for 2 weeks and managed absolutely fine. (One family we spoke to also had a toaster but it didn't work) Also, the rooms are slightly dated but we just laughed it off. (I refer you to the photo of the shower curtain!) The air conditioning is 5 euros per day. We thought this was a bit steep so we managed without it, but only just as the weather is absolutely boiling. The Safety deposit boxes are in the wardrobe and are 10 euros a week. Please look at the pictures when i have put them up regarding the rooms and message me if you want to know anything else :)

The pool area was relatively normal, plenty of sunbeds and umbrella's, then there is a baby pool and a main pool with a shallow and deep end. Something i didn't like is towards the end of the day the locals are allowed to come into the pool so on weekends, it can get pretty busy at the pool area so if your planning on doing any excursions, weekends would be the best time. You don't have to pay for the beds or the umbrella's either and the pool area is open from 10am - 7pm.

The Valana Restaurant is nice. Nothing special, (2 star hotel remember!) they have a range of things on the menu varying between 5 - 8 euros. I had a Jacket potato with cheese and ham (bloody huge potato!) for 5.50, you can get a cheese and bacon toasted sandwich and chips for 6 euros, and a cheeseburger and chips for 7 euros. They had more things but we ate in mostly although the breakfast and dinner that we did have there was lovely.
This is probably the one thing that i really didn't like - the prices in the Valana itself..very expensive. A normal glass of coke was 3 euros. Yes - 3 euros. If you go out to restaurants etc it was about 1.80, 1.90. The ice-creams in the Valana were also 3 euros, however if you go out of the Valana and turn left and walk straight down the road as if you were going to the main road, on the right is a supermarket and they have a huge selection of well known ice-creams (Magnum, Cornetto's, Ben and Jerrys) at much better prices than the Valana. (We paid 6 euro's for 2 plain Boss ice-creams at the Valana but only 4 euro's for 2 double caramel Magnums in this supermarket.) Crisps at the Valana were 1.50 but they were slightly larger than normal packets of Walkers/Lays so this isn't really expensive.

As we were self-catering, had to go shopping, if you have a car - go to Carrefour, about a 10 minute drive away or Orphanides about 15 minutes away. If not (like us) then don't go to the supermarket around the corner, it is quite expensive compared to if you go further along. You can get a 6 pack of 2 litre bottles of water (from the same place as the ice-creams) for 3 euros. Bottles of pop ranged from 2.20 euros to 2.80 euros, depending how far you go. As in the way of food goes, dont go to the closest place, because that is where it is most expensive go for a further 2 or 3 supermarkets, theres absolutely loads around just go to the main road, turn left and look up each street. This way you get a feeling for the prices and what is good value and what is not. If you like your english brands then we got these: Smash mash - 1.40, Hellmans Mayonnaise - 1.80, Flora Butter - 1.45, but in the shop around the corner it is 1.65. (I know you may think that 20 cents isn't a lot, but if you think like that for everything it soon mounts up. If your worreid about the cost of food, shop around dont just stick to one place) Piz Buin suncream - 9.50.

Last of all, I have read here that Olympic Holidays are awful, this is not true. My experience is that they were brillant, we saw our rep everyday (Stephanie) she was well informed of local knowledge and was happy to help with any problems or concerns. Olympic Holidays were ready and waiting for us at the airport, the Welcome meeting was great, as i said during the holiday our rep was always there, and then on the way home there were reps everywhere at the airport. No complaints about them either, am actually thinking of going with them again next year.

I think thats all, i would like to say there are THREE Valana apartment buildings, each one is slightly newer than the other because you can see they have expanded through the years but you definately do not need to walk past ''building sites'' You get dropped off at the original Valana apartments, which is also the Pagoda Restaurant (Im not sure if they use these apartments, i think they just use the two newer blocks) and you walk through a small CAR PARK which holds about 7 cars to the Valana..no building sites at all?

Honestly, i don't mean to offend anyone, but i really do not see what people are on about. This hotel is good, yes it might be basic but it is 2 star.

I think thats enough, take a look at the pictures once they go up and please feel free to message me about anything else :) Hope this helps!

When the transit van dropped us at the hotel i was hoping he was joking when he said this was the valana! We were led to a building about two building sites away! These apartments were nicer and newer than the main hotel but eeriely isolated, as two girls on our own we didn't feel safe having to walk through dark empty roads and alleyways to get to the main town which was disappointing.
We found the town to not have many tourists but loads of unfriendly locals. I'm not sure if it's tourists they don't like or women! I seriously considered paying for a flight home i was that miserable!
We made the best of it as much as we could, other reviews say there is no beach but there is a stretch of beach behind the shops which was nice.
Overall i would say there was nothing wrong with the hotel itself, it was just in a bad place, i would recommend staying in another part of cyprus because limmasol is a dirty, unfriendly place. I would also pay a bit extra for all inclusive as the food and drink is very expensive in cyprus.
I would go again as the weather was to die for, but i would never go to Limmasol and i would go all inclusive!
I hope this will be helpful.

Right well we arrived and after getting off the coach we were dissapointed it looked horrendous however once settled into our room it didnt seem so bad! (after we were walked up a dirt track and to a different block!) Next morning we awoke and enjoyed our surroundings that was until we opened the cupboards which were full of rotting smelly food i know we were self catering but you dont expect that. After that we we were happy with the rest of the room although there were no cooking facilties apart from a hob what can you do with that?? and a kettle that leaked boling water. We later found that you had to pay 5 euros a day for a toaster that is disgusting so we did not bother!! You also have to pay the same price for air conditioning which should come as standard this day and age!! We really enjoyed the weather and the rest of the holiday although be warned the pool gets over run with locals between 13.00-17.00 who are very rude. The hotel itself is out to make money with two plastic cups of pop costing over £5.00 and the lunches are dissapointing and over priced i asked for a seafood salad and the prawns which obviously looked frozen not fresh were warm????? Also please be warned of the attitude of the manager who is happy whilst taking money but easily turns when he sees that you have been to the supermarket. Also the cleaning is a disgrace the towels are grey and moth eaten so i would suggest the you take your your own!! We also ended up having to buy toilet paper as our room was cleaned on a hit and miss basis. Although this sounds like a bad review we enjoyed our stay and loved Cyprus however we would never go back to this hotel unless it was almost free!!

i have stayed at this hotel 3 times , and i always find the hotel clean and comfortable , the pool area is great for the lazing around and soaking up the sun, beware there is no life guard but there are life rings and plenty of depth signs in and around the pool. there is a small shop near to the hotel called lucys and here is very good value for buying fags and drink, the hotel has a good choice of food ,but dont buy the milkshakes for the kids i had to pay £5 for 2 this about £2.75 english each ,ouchhhh, but overall a nice to place to stay and enjoy the sun ,,,,

Booked a last minute deal , thankfully we didnt pay the full brochure price. Having read the other reviews before we went meant we knew what to expect. We were pleasantly surprised though, we had 2 large apartments, 1 for ourselves and one next door for our 3 teenagers.Air conditioning was extra but was necessary. Music started at 10am at the pool and the afternoons and weekend proved very popular with the locals. If anything it added more color and holiday atmosphere and they bought drinks and food at the pool bar.
Drinks and food are expensive. Very nice Chinese restaurant called Patagoda at the front of hotel, worth booking.

We stayed at the hotel/apartments in August 06. I would say that the accomodation was OK - nothing really immpresive. It was clean enough and sheets were changed every two days but I would recommend to bring your own towels. The most annoying thing was that the pool was open to the public, so everyday it was full of locals. The hotel is situated just 5 min walk from main taverns and 'night life' area. It is a good place to sleep but nothing more.
Ps. air con is L2 per day.

  • Liked — Good location
  • Disliked — Overcrowded pool by locals

The Valana apartments were a bit of a mixed bag. We were in an annexe away from the main hotel, seemingly in a block unpopulated by any other guests. This did not bother me too much, but the building site across the road did.

Not really the Valanas fault that though. The apartments were very spacious, apart from the tiny bathroom. I couldn't fault the apartment in terms of facilities and cleanliness. The bed was uncomfortable, more pillows required.

The staff at the Valana were friendly and helpful. We went through Olympus, and they seemed well organised. We went on excursions to the Cyprus night, which was excellent, and Paphos, which was pretty good as well.

There is a pool at the Valana, with an attached bar. This was quite nice, but was marred by the loud music pumping out from some local radio station, and the locals who descended on the pool in the afternoon. I come on holiday to relax and not feel like I am being pushed out of a pool I have paid for by a bunch of non-paying guests.

Night time entertainment at the Valana is fleeting, and not quite right. The tiny bar is good enough, but the guests are an odd mix of old locals with young thai women, ex-pat locals and random guests. There is no sense of a "community" as you get in some hotels.

Regarding Limassol itself, it is a busy town, on a main road. It is not a picturesque Cypriot town. There are some nice bars and restaurants, but it is very reminiscent of a tacky Spanish resort. There is no beach.

It is also very expensive - Cypriot pound prices are equivalent to UK Pound prices out here, but the exchange rates it is more expensive than the UK.

I would recommend Cyprus, as the locals are very friendly and it is hot - But not the Valana or Limassol. Go to the East of the island or somewhere more tranquil instead.
