First off, i can tell you that this is going to be long. So i apologise for the length. But i want to say that I THOROUGHLY ENJOYED my holiday. There were things that irritated me, but i would definately go there on holiday again.
Also, Yes..the Valana is a 2 Star hotel - many people I spoke to over there claimed they didn't know this, but if you actually look at your holiday details it does tell you this. If you want a 4 or 5 Star hotel, then go and make sure you've booked for one and pay the price for one. (Sorry, Rant over..back to the review)
I stayed here at the beginning of July for 2 weeks, a package holiday with Olympic Holidays and Eurocypria Airlines.
Upon arrival, we checked in and went to our room. (Number 131 - 3rd Floor) We did have slight trouble opening the door but realised we were making it much more complicated than it was. After this, I had a good look around after reading previous reviews and my only complaint is that I think they need to check the cutlery as one of the forks was bent and you couldn't use it but it wasn't really a big deal if i'm honest. Apart from that, the rooms were fine - some people moaned about their showers being slow etc. but ours was fine. In my opinion, an additional piece of kitchen equipment would be handy as there is only a 2 ring electric cooker, but we ate in mostly for 2 weeks and managed absolutely fine. (One family we spoke to also had a toaster but it didn't work) Also, the rooms are slightly dated but we just laughed it off. (I refer you to the photo of the shower curtain!) The air conditioning is 5 euros per day. We thought this was a bit steep so we managed without it, but only just as the weather is absolutely boiling. The Safety deposit boxes are in the wardrobe and are 10 euros a week. Please look at the pictures when i have put them up regarding the rooms and message me if you want to know anything else :)
The pool area was relatively normal, plenty of sunbeds and umbrella's, then there is a baby pool and a main pool with a shallow and deep end. Something i didn't like is towards the end of the day the locals are allowed to come into the pool so on weekends, it can get pretty busy at the pool area so if your planning on doing any excursions, weekends would be the best time. You don't have to pay for the beds or the umbrella's either and the pool area is open from 10am - 7pm.
The Valana Restaurant is nice. Nothing special, (2 star hotel remember!) they have a range of things on the menu varying between 5 - 8 euros. I had a Jacket potato with cheese and ham (bloody huge potato!) for 5.50, you can get a cheese and bacon toasted sandwich and chips for 6 euros, and a cheeseburger and chips for 7 euros. They had more things but we ate in mostly although the breakfast and dinner that we did have there was lovely.
This is probably the one thing that i really didn't like - the prices in the Valana itself..very expensive. A normal glass of coke was 3 euros. Yes - 3 euros. If you go out to restaurants etc it was about 1.80, 1.90. The ice-creams in the Valana were also 3 euros, however if you go out of the Valana and turn left and walk straight down the road as if you were going to the main road, on the right is a supermarket and they have a huge selection of well known ice-creams (Magnum, Cornetto's, Ben and Jerrys) at much better prices than the Valana. (We paid 6 euro's for 2 plain Boss ice-creams at the Valana but only 4 euro's for 2 double caramel Magnums in this supermarket.) Crisps at the Valana were 1.50 but they were slightly larger than normal packets of Walkers/Lays so this isn't really expensive.
As we were self-catering, had to go shopping, if you have a car - go to Carrefour, about a 10 minute drive away or Orphanides about 15 minutes away. If not (like us) then don't go to the supermarket around the corner, it is quite expensive compared to if you go further along. You can get a 6 pack of 2 litre bottles of water (from the same place as the ice-creams) for 3 euros. Bottles of pop ranged from 2.20 euros to 2.80 euros, depending how far you go. As in the way of food goes, dont go to the closest place, because that is where it is most expensive go for a further 2 or 3 supermarkets, theres absolutely loads around just go to the main road, turn left and look up each street. This way you get a feeling for the prices and what is good value and what is not. If you like your english brands then we got these: Smash mash - 1.40, Hellmans Mayonnaise - 1.80, Flora Butter - 1.45, but in the shop around the corner it is 1.65. (I know you may think that 20 cents isn't a lot, but if you think like that for everything it soon mounts up. If your worreid about the cost of food, shop around dont just stick to one place) Piz Buin suncream - 9.50.
Last of all, I have read here that Olympic Holidays are awful, this is not true. My experience is that they were brillant, we saw our rep everyday (Stephanie) she was well informed of local knowledge and was happy to help with any problems or concerns. Olympic Holidays were ready and waiting for us at the airport, the Welcome meeting was great, as i said during the holiday our rep was always there, and then on the way home there were reps everywhere at the airport. No complaints about them either, am actually thinking of going with them again next year.
I think thats all, i would like to say there are THREE Valana apartment buildings, each one is slightly newer than the other because you can see they have expanded through the years but you definately do not need to walk past ''building sites'' You get dropped off at the original Valana apartments, which is also the Pagoda Restaurant (Im not sure if they use these apartments, i think they just use the two newer blocks) and you walk through a small CAR PARK which holds about 7 cars to the Valana..no building sites at all?
Honestly, i don't mean to offend anyone, but i really do not see what people are on about. This hotel is good, yes it might be basic but it is 2 star.
I think thats enough, take a look at the pictures once they go up and please feel free to message me about anything else :) Hope this helps!
