We booked a family holiday for the half term to the Anassa on the Sunday times recommendation of Giles Coren, who we will now be following very closely but only to avoid any other places her recommends! We paid the best part of 20k for our break but ended up staying only 4 days and ending our holiday over a week early. On the morning of our first day as we were preparing to go down to breakfast our 4 year old daughter pointed out a huge spider on the coving above our sons cot. This was not a normal house spider but a European Tarantula! We was absolutely horrified beyond belief. Admittedly I do have a spider phobia but I did not expect to see this type of spider in Cyprus. The spider was dealt with by a woman from housekeeping who arrived with a broom and attacked it and took it away. My husband has since told me that the lady told him it was the type that shoots its hairs and can stick in your skin. The hotel told me that they only sting like a bee, but it was above my 18 month old sons cot and I did not want my kids stung by this. The hotel was very accommodating and moved us to another room. We were told that it was rare for them to come inside and they had no other complaints from other guests. I still felt uneasy in the second room but to my horror another appeared from behind the tv cabinet in the middle of the night. The weather was wet and this may not have helped. We flew home ASAP the next day after offers from the hotel to transfer to the two sister hotels. Unfortunately we had a very mediocre meal at Helios restaurant that was extortionate. I found a piece of black plastic that could have broken my tooth and the staff passes this off as truffle! Rubbish. For lunch in the amphora restaurant we ordered pizza and it was a frozen base for 25 euro! On a good note the kids club was fantastic, the staff very knowledgable and friendly. Obviously we will not be returning to Anassa or Cyprus.
