Visited the famous Baths of Aphrodite and was unimpressed by a rather smelly hole in the ground filled with water. Signage around the area was poor e.g. How to get down to the more inspiring beach. I'm glad we hadn't travelled very far.

It is a lovely beach, albeit down about a hundred concrete steps. There are parasols and sunbeds for hire for 2.50 euros per item. At the top of the steps is a tourist trap restaurant and although the prices are a bit higher than elsewhere, the food, convenience and service is worth the extra. There are showers and toilets available for public use which is a great thing for when you get off the beach. The waters are clear and shallow and perfect for children and snorkelling. There is a fresh spring which runs out of a pipe and onto the beach and the beach is sandy.

Given the legend of Aphrodite, I am amazed that she would have lowered herself to bathe her.....a small pool, a bit dark, quite smelly....the only entertaining bit was watching ladies of a certain age trying to anoint themselves with the water from the pool without falling in. It passed half an hour, but don't make a special journey.

A beautiful, tranquil haven. It now has a nature trail, wandering donkeys, benches to sit on in shady areas and signs displaying information of all the different plants flowers and shrubs. The water is supposed to be magical and you can dip your hands and feet into the trickling gulley's, nooks and cranny's to bathe in Aphrodite's waters. Amazing place and free entry, small gift shop come café and as expected the little man sitting with his donkeys offering rides across the reserve, as well as the priest selling fresh oranges at the bottom of the path. I have never been to Cyprus without visiting here, its our tradition.

When you are in Paphos, you may see advertised a day trip to the Baths of Aphrodite arranged by tour operators. However, there is a much cheaper way of getting there, even if you don't have a car.

From Kato Paphos harbour: Buy a daily bus ticket when you board the bus, which costs 5 Euros and gives you unlimited bus travel for one day. Take the bus going to the centre of town (bus 610 or 618). Get off at the Main Teminus there. From this point, you should take the coach going to Polis. This coach will accept your daily ticket so no more to pay. When you get off the bus at Polis, look for the car park next to the junction which has the sign pointing to Baths of Aphrodite. It's actually a bus terminus also. Here you can ask for the minibus going all the way to the Baths of Aphrodite. It takes a scenic route passing through Latchi. Again, the daily ticket will cover this, so no extra to pay.

Once you arrive at the Park of Aphrodite, it's free entry and the Baths of Aphrodite are accessed up a winding pathway. En route you may spot carob trees and various other plant species, which have been well maintained. The park has some amazing views looking out to sea and you can continue on past the baths up the rocky track for the best views. It's a great place for a picnic. They say it's possible to see eagles soaring near the cliffs.

Considering you can do it all for the price of a daily travel ticket, it's not to be missed. Just be ready for a steep walk up the hill.
