The Arkin Colony Hotel
Ranked #9 of 30 Hotels in Kyrenia
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 23, 2009

On arrival in the dark we were impressed by the luxiriuos entrance of this hotel in the small resort town of Kyrenia. The room we were taken to was also pleasant but the view of a petrol station wasn't quite so impressive. The very helpful lady receptionist [ whose good grasp of English was alas a rarety amongst reception staff] immediatly offered us the only alternative view - a newly built multi story car park - we decided to stay put! The morning revealed a lovey view of the mountials - if you angled your chairs on the good sized balcony!
Breakfast is a wonderful experience with great choice and lovely surroundings. The waiters efficient but distant and why dod we have to stumble on a menue with cooked options on the 3rd day of our time there.
This practice of 'tell them nothing' irritated our stay throughout - no menues displayed, no enetrtainiment details, no visible concierge to support exploration of the area, no proper hotel guide in the bed room... There were 2 very noisy events on the roof terrace, the 2nd going on til 2am on the night before we left - we were told about it on our way to the airport with the info that hardly anyone had been there - I wonder why?!
Roof top pool was lovely - but £2.80+ for an orange and lemonade?! and why are people alllowed to place their belongings on beds and go elsewhere for part of the day?
The room was comfortable but a musty smell from the bathroom and a rattly aircondition setting was never rectified despite being reported. The walls are thin and a pary of 3 teenage girls next door was a mixed blessing! take your kettle - room service is very expensive. There are a couple of small general stores opposite that will sell you sandwiches, wine and beer etc.
As mentioned before the staff on reception are not sufficiently fluent in English for an are that relies on Brits. Several minor issues eg arranging for a film in the room [finally after 2 days foound the hotel's DVD was broken!] took far too long to resolve.
All the above points werre echoed by other UK guests. The management need to take advice from a British adviser re how to make UK guests feel at home rather than 'room renters'.

Buy alcoholic drinks at local supermarkets. Do not go half board as menu very limited.
Music nights and films are for locals and residents not encouraged.

Although this is a very splendid hotel it is not one for holidaymakers. Whilst our room was very comfortable we felt like we were in a city centre hotel and not on holiday. Better suited to the business man on company expenses as the bar and restaurant prices are a bit steep. Staying on Saturday night not recommended. A rooftop concert went on until 2.30 in the morning and there was no hiding from it. From reports from other guests this was not a one-off.

The Colony is a lovely, attractive hotel, but unfortunately the service does not match its appearance. Most of the staff are lovely and very friendly, but the service is very different from last year. The evening meal is buffet style only, no a la carte menu (not that they are willing to give you anway!). The breakfast is also buffet style, but with very little choice. They don't willingly tell you that you can order hot food. The room was very noisy. We were located below the roof top pool, where they hold a lot of evening functions that go on well into the early hours! The room maid was busy making up the beds for the next guests on our departure day, whilst we were trying to pack. We almost felt we were a bit of a nuisance and it was difficult to assess where they are trying to pitch their focus. They really need to make their guests feel more welcome if they want to keep their return guests.

just returned from the Colony and had a good experience. The plus points are the town center location, the food and the really clean accomodation and rooms. The minus points are the "not friendly guest attitude" as the reception are more interested in the casino operation than the hoilday clients, the drink prices are high, and the sun loungers, if you can get one are really packed together. The beach club is average and boring after 2/3 days. All in all it is good valure at present but they need to more hotel guest orientated and decide what market they are in.

The Colony is a beautiful hotel and if you can keep in mind that this is a town centre establishment, where the main priorities are businessmen, high spending, high rolling gamblers and impressing the local glitterati, then you'll be fine here.

Tourism is a sideline for the Colony with the contentment of their tourist guests not exactly their number one concern.

Our eyes widened when the car pulled up outside the hotel - and not for the right reasons. It is on a busy, busy main road, overlooking a petrol station and close to a roundabout, with a half build building next to it. I don't think I've ever had a holiday hotel in such a less salubrious setting.

However, when you get into the building you appreciate it's quiet, classy decor. The guest rooms are beautifully decorated and we were lucky to get a room partly overlooking the sea - but it's a gamble with the Colony. If I'd been overlooking the petrol station and road, or skeleton of a building - I'd have been FURIOUS!

The hotel was also quiet as it is carpeted throughout and we had some terrific nights sleeps here which both of us sorely needed.

The pool is lovely but there are not enough sunbeds for the number of people who wanted to stay by the pool and this is something they are going to have to address - perhaps by reducing the vast restaurant space and putting more sunbeds there instead. When you can sleep around 190 people in your hotel and proudly boast you are full over the summer, but then only provide 40 sunbeds? Hmm.

We enjoyed the food very much both at breakfast and dinner (we had half board as part of the deal) but we know some people disliked it. It certainly wasn't 5* shall we say, but we were more than happy and we like to eat!

Another slight downside was that the bar prices were so outrageous, very few people drank there, making the hotel a ghost town in the evenings. I have never been in a hotel with less 'pizazz' or life after 6pm.

The only time the hotel put on any entertainment was on a Saturday evening and this was a midnight to 1.45am concert by a Turkish pop star, primarily for the local rich kids. This, as you can imagine, went down a storm with the majority of their guests, mainly older, British tourists - myself among them!

On the plus side, the hotel is in a fabulous location for access to the castle and harbour area, main shopping street and all bars and restaurants - just three minutes walk in any direction. Staff are friendly and courteous. There are some of the little touches you expect in a classy place with robes and slippers, a paper outside your door in the morning, beach and pool towels and courtesy bus service to a beach. BUT things like a blatant 'couldn't give a monkey's' attitude toweards guests' sleep being disturbed till 2am with a rooftop rock concert for the locals and a compete lack of thought or action on the pool area did grate on us, I have to say.

The hotel is very good and was vastly superior to a (supposedly) four star hotel we had stayed at in Kyrenia two days previously. The staff were friendly and very helpful. Food was very good: we had a dinner in the main restaurant, lunch on the roof top terrace, and breakfast. The roof top pool was great and there were great views of the town and the surrounding countryside. Good car valet and porter service. I had a massage which was unexceptional. All in all, the Colony Hotel made a major contribution to the overall experience of our stay in Kyrenia.
