“Keeps you fit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 30, 2013

Not easy to find, and a mighty up hill walk when you do, but you'll be on top of the world if you make the effort. Or at least, on top of the Kyrenia mountain range with views to die for on a sunny day.

The best route from Kyrenia is to take the coast road and head towards Famagusta, turning onto the made up track opposite the Buffavento Restaurant. Probably a 30 minute drive.

Pick a sunny spring or autumn day and go in the morning or late afternoon if you want to avoid the worst of the heat. And take some drinking water.

“Hold your nerve and it's worth the climb”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 22, 2013 via mobile

I don't personally think the road is that bad though it certainly demands your attention. The climb on foot from the carpark, while not steep, feels unrelenting and even in the relative cool of October can be hot going. There are no shops or cafes right at the castle itself so you should definitely make sure that you bring your own water.

Within the castle however the views are stunning. The castle itself perhaps less so. If background information is sparse in St Hilarion it is altogether absent here and the castle is substantially smaller. The one sign that is present, within the gatehouse, alludes to "some kind of surprise attack" in 1974 but gives little other information.

The site as a whole is also rather scruffy with lots of graffiti which further detracts from the castle itself but does nothing to diminish the majesty of the views.

St Hilarion and Kyrenia castle are more complete and provide more background information into the history of the area but Buffavento gives you the opportunity have a ruin and commanding views of the area more or less to yourself.

“Well-preserved ruin - lots of steps!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 17, 2013

This is quite a sizeable site, so be prepared for lots of walking, especially up and down! It is worth it if you are prepared for this! The views are spectacular and it's easy to see why a castle has been built here. Also used more recently, there is some interesting (very biased!) information about recent occupations.

“WOW, great views!”

If you hold your nerve on the drive up to the castle it is well worth it! The road is narrow and has sheer drops to one side without any safety barriers. Passing by another car was interesting!

Once you reach the car park there are a lot of steps to climb until you reach the top of the castle. Once there, there are mountain and sea views to Kyrenia and Alagadi. The views are amazing! Its well worth a visit.

We went at midday in August which was tough!! Maybe recommend going before 11am or after 4pm. Enjoy!

“Hair-raising ride!”

We were so terrified on the way up that we never reached the top but took a fork in the road to get us back down to safety. It is a totally treacherous road. Never again!
