“Beautiful frecoes inside the Church”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 10, 2012

In the mountains of the Troodos there is one of the most important monument of the history of Byzantine painting which survived over the times. That is the Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis Church situated in the upper Solea valley. Inside the Church you can see unique frescoes belonging to various periods. Beautiful work of art and well preserved that makes people to consider that church a museum of Byzantine painting. The landscape where the church is integrated is also very beautiful. So really deserve to come and visit that UNESCO monument.

“Actually open in the off season”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 5, 2012

This is one of the easiest UNESCO painted Troodos churches to visit. Many of the others are closed or only open on appointment etc, a real hassle. this one closes at 16:00 (different from the 18:00 quoted in the Lonely Planet).
Once inside - no photos - the frescos are wonderful, really bright vivid and in an excellent state of repair considering their age. Small place so doesn't take up too much time. Road to Kakopetria is in good condition so you don't need to worry about your vehicle.
