“The only access to Port Area until 20th Century.”
Reviewed September 25, 2013

Sea Gate was build just after 1300, during the construction of sea walls during Lusignan Period. It was reconstructed in 1496 by Venetians, as iti is indicated on its inscription panel. There is a rumor that Leonardo da Vinci had contributed to the design of the Sea Gate of Famagusta. It was the only gate to the port for 600 years from 1300 to 1903, except for the Arsenal Gate on the east end of the sea walls, that was used only for the entrance of galleys, now a gate for vehicle road. In 1903, 3 modern sea gates were opened on the west side of Sea Gate during British Reign.

“Charming, historical walled city”
Reviewed April 23, 2013

Small walled town steeped in amazing history and full of character. Wallking around viewing all the sites within this area is a must and can be done in a day. Walk up on to the top of the old wall in the north of the city to get views down of the Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque.

“The quickest way into the walled city from Arkin Palm Beach Hotel”
Reviewed April 12, 2013

A quick way into the city - the land gate is a much longer way round.
Just watch your step when crossing the road as traffic to the harbour uses this bit. There's some great historical murals to distract you just there, too. A museum was advertised on the map, but we didn't see it - maybe seasonal. A very short walk from the Sea Gate to the centre of the city and look out for a very nice public garden by the wall, a good place for a rest if you need it.

“Historic Old City”
Reviewed November 12, 2012

We hired a car and went, parking we found just inside the city gates by the tourist information office and was free. The old town is easy to walk round in terms of distance. and we used a tourist book we had to guide us around. Beautiful old buildings sorry we didn't have more time.

“Famagusta is well worth a visit”
Reviewed November 12, 2012

The sea gate worth seeing..
Famagusta itself...Lovely beaches, views of the sea and wonderful seafood restaurants with great sea views. Our restaurant was so close the waves were threatening to splash us we ate. The mosque is also very impressive.
