“Perfect house for friends or families”
Reviewed September 22, 2017 for a stay in September 2017

Les Martinets is a lovely, spacious country house in a small village. The house is beautiful and has absolutely everything you might need or want in it. Kim's eye for antiques and furnishing was evident and created a real 'home from home' feel and the beds were very comfortable. We were 2 couples and had plenty of space to socialise together or to spread out if we wanted some space. The garden is great and having a pool in a house in a village is a bonus.

Kim and Russ (who live nearby) were excellent hosts, giving advice where to go and always ready to help but never intrusive.

The village itself has an excellent quality restaurant (L'un des Sens) in the local hotel which I would highly recommend and which is literally within a 2 minutes walk.

Bordeaux and Bergerac make great day trips and there are plenty of lovely villages and local markets to leisurely visit.

We had a great stay here and I would highly recommend the house and location for small groups of friends or families. Thanks, Kim and Russ for a very special stay and making us so welcome.

“Wonderful village house with delightful owners”
Reviewed August 14, 2017 for a stay in July 2017

The house is amazing, full of antiques, pictures, photos, and lovely furnishings, which make it very homely, while delightfully quirky. The rooms are very spacious and the beds generous sizes and very comfortable. The kitchen is very well equipped and the barbecue was great. There are little quiet corners to sit out as well as plenty of chairs, tables and loungers around the pool and al fresco dining area. As a previous reviewer has mentioned, the photos really don't begin to to tell the story! The wifi is excellent, and there are music systems both downstairs and in the master bedroom, along with plenty of well stocked bookcases. Endless hot water and three decent showers. Parking space right in front of the house on the street (but not always easy to negotiate if you have a large car.) Kim, Russ and Charlie (woof!) were lovely, welcoming hosts, always on hand if we needed anything, and popping in occasionally to clean the pool, but otherwise leaving us very much to our own devices, which was perfect.

The village of Villefranche de Lonchat is very quiet, but well situated in wine country and a good base for day trips to, for example, St Emilion, Bergerac, Périguex, Ste Foy and Castillion, plus numerous wine producing châtaux. We recommend Les Cordeliers at Ste Emilion, and Montbazillac. We were keen to head out to the west of the Dordogne so we took the train to Sarlat from Ste Foy which was much easier than driving. So there's lots to see and do, but you have to go and find it!

Les Martinets is very much a period village house, so you should expect the odd creepy crawly, etc, and be sensible about storing food away from the temptation of those pesky little ants, but this really is a very minor detail! I'm not sure how suitable it would be as a holiday house for toddlers/very young non-swimmers; the pool is accessible from pretty much every door - and there are lots of them. There are also fairly steep steps to the upper external balcony which runs along the back of the house.

“A wonderful place for a group holiday”
Reviewed July 10, 2017 for a stay in June 2017

We were very pleasantly surprised on our arrival at this charming and comfortable home and had the good fortune of staying here for 2 weeks from
17/6/17 with 3 generations of family from ages 58 down to 9 months, the house offered the space we needed and had parking right outside on the quiet street. The house was fresh and clean on our arrival and the tiled floors meant there were no 'doggie odours' anywhere in the property - in fact no sign that a dog had ever stepped foot in the house or gardens. There is a wonderful secluded, heated swimming pool which the owners maintain to a high standard, cleaning and testing the PH balance regularly. There are also terraced areas with very pretty flowering shrubs which attract the most beautiful butterflies and delightful Hummingbird moths. We enjoyed alfresco dining most evenings under the covered terrace and made the most of the BBQ provided. It was lovely to relax by the pool either on the chairs or recliners dotted around or simply sitting on the steps at the Roman end, feet gloriously cooling in the water. The villa has very spacious bedrooms with plenty of storage for clothing etc, they were all very prettily furnished with two being ensuite. In all there were 3 bathrooms with 3 loos so no queueing even with our party of 8! There was one ground floor double bedroom with a large ensuite shower room for anyone who has issues with stairs. My partner and myself had this room, we had French doors opening on to the patio and pool area and there was nothing nicer than having an early morning or late night swim especially on a starry night in the balmy evening air, sheer bliss! Access was possible from the upper bedrooms too as there is a balcony and steps leading down to the pool. It's a very well designed house with all the space you could possibly want or need for a family or gathering of friends. The location in the lovely village of Villefranche de Lonchat was great for cycle rides and walks out to lac du Gurson and for drives out to Bordeaux, St Emilion, Bergerac to name a few beautiful places to visit. The locals were very friendly and helpful and it was a real treat being able to stroll to one of the two boulangeries for fresh bread and croissants each morning. The village also has some very good restaurants and bars if you don't fancy cooking and there are more great places further out too. It was a relief to discover how fond of dogs the French are and they are welcomed into most cafés and restaurants and even shops! The French road network is amazing and driving is a pleasure once you get used to driving on the opposite side of the road! The owners Kim and Russel were very friendly and helpful with advice on everything we asked of them and were great hosts whose generosity is obvious from the comfortable home they have created for the benefit of their guests, we felt very welcome and at home and were very sad to have to say au revoir at the end of our holiday. Les Martinets offers exceptional value for money. We will return!! ❤️

“Wonderful house in a lovely part of France”
Reviewed September 12, 2016 for a stay in August 2016

The photos that advertise this house do not do it justice. It is spacious and the pool is fantastic. My husband, myself and two children stayed for a week with my Sister-in-law and her family and we had a really enjoyable time. There was plenty of room for 6 adults and two 17 year olds. The cooking facilities and kitchen are very well equipped, we made use of the barbecue as well. The village is very pretty and a two minute walk away, while the supermarket is an easy 10 minute drive away. Kim & Russ who own the house were very helpful and friendly, Kim even helped us plan a canoe boat trip on The Dordogne and helped us get some tickets printed from an email in the village. I can't recommend this property enough, we had a superb holiday.

“A French Gem”
Reviewed August 26, 2016 for a stay in August 2016

I stayed here 4 years ago and this return visit didn't fail to impress me again. The house is wonderful; furnished tastefully with antiques, ornaments and pictures, giving it a luxurious yet homely feel. It is spotlessly clean and has everything you need to self cater. The pool is beautiful and is a welcome addition to relieve the heat of the sun. (Towels provided!)
The village has a few shops to buy groceries, bread etc and a chemist. In August, the village square has a 'party' on Friday evenings with food and drink stalls. There is a local bar and hotel too; so it can be a quiet retreat with fun mixed in as and when you want it.
All in all, a fantastic place to stay.

“Nice 2 weeks away in the Dordogne”
Reviewed July 26, 2016 for a stay in July 2016

We had a really enjoyable 2 weeks in Les Martinets. Kim couldn't have been more helpful and welcoming and the location was perfect for us. A nice bar and restaurant in the village, baker and general store all in walking distance, and then close enough to drive to a lot of the sights of the Dordogne (Monbazillac, perigeaux, Bergerac, st emilion etc).

Only reason for not giving 5 stars was that there was music playing from the local salle de fete on one night until 4am (Kim complained to the Mayors office on our behalf the very next day), and the house had a few hazards for a crazy 18 month old child, something which we didn't think about when booking.

Overall, however, a very good holiday home in a very good location. We had a lot of fun and would definitely recommend it as a place to stay.

If you like to relax and enjoy the peace and tranquillity of a little place this is it.
There are a couple of shops to get local resources and a lovely lake.
There are local vinyards when you need to stock up.
But the place we stayed is fab
