“Beautiful area, home away from home, welcoming host.”
Reviewed September 8, 2016 for a stay in September 2016

As soon as we arrived we were upgraded to a larger gite as it was available and Steph said it was her policy to upgrade if at all possible.
The gite was really lovely, very comfortable, gorgeous furnishings and had everything we needed. Lots and lots of toys for the children, even dressing up box and colouring pencils, which our girls loved.
We ordered the welcome pack on arrival, with a family meal. This was delivered to our gite at the requested time and was perfect. Delicious chicken with a variety of salads, huge helpings of homemade cheesecake and a delicious cheeseboard together with beers wines tea coffee etc. A lovely start to our short break. Steph also cooks a few evenings a week on request, if you need a break from self catering all the time, highly recommended.
Also there is a shared pool, which was immaculate and heated to a lovely warm temperature and a small play area with trampoline and swings etc.
The Cognac region is very beautiful with lots of pretty towns and villages to explore, we would definitely return.
Thanks Steph for making our stay so enjoyable.

“Fun and food in well equipped but laid back gite!”
Reviewed September 7, 2016 for a stay in August 2016

We stayed in Aristide which is a 3 bed/2 bath gite, with 4 adults and 3 kids. It is one of only 3 gites at the Courtyard which means the whole place maintains a personal and fairly low key ambience. Steph, Charlie and Fin are really charming hosts and will give you all the advice you need about what to do and how to get about. Fin even came on a family bike ride with us and showed us the way - my kids were really taken with him and he is a really lovely boy. They also have 2 very patient and gentle dogs which my little one was completely obsessed with and almost killed with affection - thankfully the dogs didn't mind.

I have mainly very positive things to say about all aspects of our stay there but to list a few of the best bits and the odd suggestion:

The gite was very well equipped, clean and easily big enough for our family. There were LOADS of toys and books for the kids. The garden was lovely too with nice loungers to relax on in the early evening. I would suggest that the sail might be moved (or improved) to provide more shade as it didn't really work where it was.
I had a nosey into the other gites and all looked lovely - all slightly different from eachother so would suit people with differing numbers/ages etc.
The beds were very comfy and both double rooms were lovely. The cute kids room had bunkbeds and a cot so all 3 of our kids slept in there (with surprising success!) however we could have had the cot in another room if we had wanted. The only improvement I would suggest for the gite is perhaps having more storage/shelf space available for clothes in the bedrooms (the main one was fine) and also in the living/kitchen for food, as although there was plenty of furniture it was all full and we struggled to find space for groceries ( as we were a large group we had quite a lot!). There was a very useful space under the stairs for general bags and stuff though.
The pool was lovely and warm - it is worth noting that there's no shallow end which was a shame for my toddler as she was largely confined to playing on a small step HOWEVER she did have a proper swim with armbands when she gained confidence. I wonder whether they would think about a toddler pool for the little ones as they seem to have the space for it in the pool area. There were plenty of loungers and we actually often had the pool to ourselves which was unexpected but very nice.
Lots of things were provided like linen, towels, baby items, kitchen items so you really can travel light there. Apart from clothes and maybe your bikes you really don't need anything.
Hands down the best thing about the Courtyard is Steph's amazing cooking! She really is a great cook and we had a delicious welcome meal in our gite on the first night and 3 lovely table D'hote meals with wine during the week - which we shared with other guests sitting in the lovely courtyard whilst all the kids (who Steph had fed beforehand) either went to bed or ran around doing various activities and playing with eachother/the dogs/Fin or watching films in one of the gites.
In terms of activities we did pony trekking and chocolate making which everyone enjoyed. We also went to the local waterpark and lake (next to eachother) which made for a couple of really nice (and cheap!) days out.

At the end of our week at the last meal Steph did a lovely and heartfelt award ceremony for the kids with certificates of what each one had achieved that week.
Although you can see that this is an ongoing labour of love for the May family I am confident that it will just keep on improving as they develop and hone their skills and their property. Overall it really is the kind of place you remember for its warmth, fun, family and food and I wouldn't hesitate to go back - I am in fact trying to organise a group of us to go and take all of the gites but it gets so booked up I would be lucky to achieve that!

All in all a fab stay in a lovely place with a great host family.

“Perfect for young families with a special something extra for the parents to enjoy!”
Reviewed August 7, 2016 for a stay in July 2016

If you are looking for a totally relaxing break with your young family, you don't need to look any further......The Courtyard at Saint Catherine is perfect for you!

I stayed recently for 2 weeks in Chez Aristade with my husband, my 6 year old daughter and 4 year old boy/girl twins. My parents joined us for 8 nights in the middle of our holiday but more about that later.

We had an amazing 2 weeks and I cannot speak highly enough of the wonderful hosts, Steph and her husband Charlie. They have thought of everything so your gite truly is a home from home! You really only need to bring your passports, credit card and clothes!

For the parents; they are basic provisions to get your holiday off to a good start without having to rush out to the supermarket the minute you arrive! A few dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid, dish cloths, bin bags, foil, cling film, kitchen roll, fly spray, kitchen cleaners, hand soap, charcoal and firelighters for your first BBQ.......and pantry items such as olive oil, salt, pepper, sugar, tea, coffee, milk. The gites have a Tassimo coffee machine with a few capsules to get you started.......you can buy these in the local Supermarket or just bring your favourites from home! To make travelling with young children they have everything covered; high chair, cots, sterilisers, stair gates, step stools, night lights, kids cutlery, plates and cups, plug socket covers and even a bath mat and bath toys!

There was even a vase of fresh flowers from Steph's garden on the table when we arrived - a lovely touch!

For the kids; a great selection of toys, books, dolls, dressing up clothes, colouring pens, dvds, games waiting in your gite. There was even a massive blackboard in our give for the kids to get creative!

I had ordered the welcome dinner knowing that we would arrive around 6pm after a long drive and not feel like heading to the shops. It was a delicious 3 courses (Tomato, mozzarella and basil salad, roast chicken, potatoes and salad, followed by homemade cheesecake and a huge cheese plate which we were still eating 2 days later) all served to our gite. There was more than enough for all of us and there were cold beers and a carafe of local wine waiting in the fridge. So if you have a long drive on your day of arrival definitely book the welcome meal and get your holiday off to a great start!

The gite was extremely well equipped with more than enough crockery, cutlery, pans, utensils and glassware. The dishwasher and washing machine make it a home from home!

The pool is heated, so perfect for little children, it is gated and safe. There are plenty of sun loungers and giant beanbags and umbrellas for all to use. It never felt over crowded. There is a play park right next to the pool area with sandpit, swings, slide and trampoline.

The 'gite cluster' concept works brilliantly enabling parents to socialise and children to play together. The courtyard is gated so the children can play outside without the worry of them getting out onto a road. Steph's dinner evenings are an absolute delight and I would highly recommend opting in for dinner (she cooked Mon, Wed and Fri whilst we were there but this may change and I think she may only cook during peak season when the gites are fully occupied).

Steph discusses menus with you so that the food appeals to all guests (even the fussiest child eater) and you can let her know what you don't like. The kids meal was served early at 6pm and the parents dinner followed around 7pm, giving you the option to put babies to bed if you wish. Dinner is served in the pergola outside in the courtyard and our children played lego whilst we enjoyed Stephs amazing cooking which was waitress served. Each 3 course meal was of master chef restaurant quality and a real feast for your eyes! It was excellent value at 35 EURO/head. You can bring your own wine or buy a carafe of local wine from Steph.

Nothing is too much trouble for Steph and her husband Charlie and if you needed something which wasn't in the gite, all you had to do was ask! She will happily make recommendations of places to visit, restaurant reservations, and even book activities for your whole family to enjoy. My 3 little ones can highly recommend the pony riding, painting on porcelain and best of all the chocolate making at Chocolaterie Letuffe. All local within 20 mins of the gites and the painting on porcelain lady came to the gite! How easy is that for entertainment!

The surrounding countryside is stunning, fields of vineyards, sunflowers and hay bales. There are some easy walks around the gites and you can even take the resident dogs, Susie and Lilah for a walk. Two extremely gentle, calm dogs whom you cannot resist but give them a pat or a tummy tickle!

As I mentioned earlier my parents stayed with us for the middle week of our stay at the courtyard. They flew in on Easyjet from Bristol and we picked them up from La Rochelle airport about 1.5 hrs drive away. This is a great option if you feel the drive would be too far from the UK, the flight only cost £100 each person return and was only 1 hr 20 mins.

We explored the old port of La Rochelle which had some lovely restaurants, a night market and lots of street performers. We also spent a day on Ile de Rae a small island off La Rochelle which you access by modern bridge (16 euro toll). We visited Royan which is the closest beach to the gite but didn't think that was as nice as Ile de Rae, it was more touristy with a fun fair and tacky shops.Guess it depends on what you are after.....

Cognac is close by but we didn't have time to explore there, we'll do that next time! We would definitely like to plan a return stay here in the future.

If you book this accommodation you will not be disappointed.......the best feedback we can give Steph and Charlie is that our kids started crying as we drove away to catch our ferry because they just didn't want to leave! A truly memorable, fun filled yet relaxing family holiday. Thank you so much Steph - you are the perfect host! One in a million! We can't wait to book our return stay and next time I definitely want to hit those French antique shops with you! I'll have to leave some room in the boot though! See you next time x

“Amazing place and people”
Reviewed June 27, 2016 for a stay in June 2016

The Courtyard is an amazing place to stay. Steph and her family made us feel so welcome. This was the first time we had taken our 18-month-old abroad so it was a welcome relief to stay somewhere with all the equipment you could possibly need on a daily basis (cot, highchair, toys, books, stairgate.... I could go on). It made travelling a lot more enjoyable and meant room for our stuff too!!

The accommodation was spacious, clean and tastefully decorated to complement the old building. We had our own private garden with a BBQ and plenty of seating. The swimming pool was clean and a great place to spend hot sunny days. There is also a small play area with a sandpit, trampoline, swing ball, swings & slides.

The on-site dining which Steph personally cooks and serves to you outside in the courtyard is fantastic. The food is so flavoursome and Steph goes above and beyond to make sure everyone is catered for (even the fussy ones). We ended up taking full advantage of this service when we stayed as it was handy with our little one and tasted great too.

The Courtyard is in a peaceful location and is very convenient for visiting the surrounding areas; it seems you are not too far away from everywhere. The Supermarket in Roulliac is very accessible and has a great mix of products. Steph will happily arrange some local activities for you including horse riding, a visit to a farm; we went to the chocolate making which was great fun.

We are planning on going back again next year and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend staying at the Courtyard to anyone. Steph and her family have done an amazing job restoring the old Priory and giving it a new lease of life.

“Totally brilliant stay from start to finish, a definite return!”
Reviewed June 19, 2016 for a stay in June 2016

We stayed at the Courtyard as an extended family for 10 nights after recommendation from some good friends of ours. What can I say, a fantastic experience with amazing hosts! We already knew they had a lot of baby related equipment (stair gates etc), but they also have a lot of DVDs, toys and books to keep the little ones entertained. Put simply, you could quite easily fly with clothes and toiletries and ease the journey! We will travel with a lot less next time!
The setting is peaceful, supermarkets within 15 mins drive and there's plenty to do. We did pony riding, chocolate making (a must), a farm visit and plate decorating, plus visited the many beautiful towns and villages in the area. Further afield, there's a zoo (well worth a visit), parks and the seaside should you wish.
Back at the courtyard, if you do nothing else all holiday, sample Steph's incredible cooking at every opportunity and enjoy the socialness of an outdoor french dining experience.
We really didn't want to go home, and we're already booked in for next year!

Just back from our first stay at The Courtyard, with husband and dog. Now figuring out dates for a return trip in September! Just amazing. As previous reviewers have stated, the accommodation is superb - facilities, quality etc etc - totally agree with all of them. What makes The Courtyard even better are two things - 1) the food and 2) the May Family. Steph is the most amazing cook, and having had her arrival dinner, we opted to have her cook for us nearly every night - restaurant quality food served at our kitchen table (or out in the courtyard during the peak season) - total bliss if you choose to (or have to) be at home in the evenings with kids etc - in our case, we did not want to leave our dog on her own. Couldn't have got better food in a restaurant, with the bliss of being at home and able to have the few glasses of wine. Secondly, the May family - again, totally superb people. They are so much more than 'just' owners of the accommodation. It really feels like staying with friends........without having to see them over the breakfast table! Nothing was too much trouble for them - information, shooting the breeze etc etc. Steph and her husband Charlie run a one-in-a-million venue, with Finn (their son) and Lilah and Suzey (the dogs). Cannot wait to return SOON!

We just returned from staying at the Courtyard for three weeks.

The Courtyard has been restored ground up by Charlie and Stef May, a labour of love where everything has been done with enormous pride. It totally exceeds its four star rating, with good quality linen, very comfortable bedding, power showers which are actually powerful and a very well equipped kitchen.

The accommodation is spotlessly clean, under stated elegance where Stef's eye for detail is evident. The country side setting is stunning with endless things do in the vacinity.

The real revelation of our stay was Stef's cooking. Stef serves beautifully presented food, using local produce, sometimes from her own garden, where the quality of food will shame most high end restaurants, all delivered to your door. it really does not get any better.

The Courtyard is owned and run by a family who have a very deep understanding of quality, service and who take enormous pride in everything they do. We never felt we were paying guests and the May family's hospitality and company is a genuine pleasure.

In summary, fabulous, totally recommended and we will return.
