“Such a shame”
Reviewed September 10, 2018 for a stay in August 2018

This place could be great, it is set in lovely grounds and the view is fantastic, however it was let down by a few things I feel would be easy to rectify for future guests.
The house wasn't clean on arrival I think the cleaners are doing the owners a disservice. I've been holidaying in France for over 30 years and know the difference between rustic and unclean. My child dropped a dummy on the floor in the bedroom we were staying in, I bent down to retrieve it and was not impressed with what I found under the bed. Thick with dust and cobwebs, clearly hadn't been cleaned for sometime. I vacuumed it myself. There was a lot of dust on the pots and pans. The majority of the crockery and cutlery went through the dishwasher before we could use it. The bin was full of rubbish that had been placed in the wrong bags/bins so the bin men wouldn't take it, we therefore had to sort all of that out. Which wasn't pleasant.
The pool was extremely slippy and one of our party was injured slipping over as the mat that was down to prevent slipping was a bit too short this could do with being larger to prevent future incidents. The barbecue was completely dysfunctional but also unclean, in other properties we've stayed in it usually stipulates that you clean the barbecue before you leave and empty the bins, maybe a sign could be put up to remind guests to do this?
It is a shame that we found the house this way but we made the most of our time there and the children enjoyed the games room.

“Underwhelmed”

We were advised that we would be met by someone on arrival, we were only met by bags and bags of rubbish left at the gate by the previous occupants. The bin men refused to collect it as the bags contained waste that was not recyclable. The local dog tore into the bags and then the flies descended and in 35 degree heat we had to sort out the rubbish ourselves so it could be collected. Not a great start to our holiday. The BBQ was so dirty we couldn't use it, we had to buy one. We left it there clean and ready for the next guests.
The house is spacious but had months if not years of dust and cobwebs around and under the beds. The windows were filthy and the fridge needed cleaning out before we could put our food in it. Bare wires hanging out of light fittings in the bathroom, panels missing from the shower base, shower head held up with old sponges wedged behind the riser pole. In the other bathroom the shower head didn't work at all.
Pool area needs more non slip mats. Despite the warning notices one of our party fell and was badly bruised because the tiled surface was so slippy. It is not safe.
We tried to do what we could to make the best of it, the games room was good and the view from the veranda. We didn't let it spoil our holiday but expected better for the price.
Happy with rustic french decor as long as the property is clean and everything works as it should. We have been renting holiday villas in France for 15 years and have stayed in lots of different places but unfortunately this is not one of the ones we would recommend or book to stay in again.

“Perfect away-from-it-all stay”
Reviewed September 4, 2018 for a stay in August 2018

We booked a 10-day stay at the end of August through the owner ending 31st August 2018. The house is lovely - spacious and very well equipped. My favourite experience was sitting on the huge verandah in the evening, soaking up the beautiful view and quaffing chilled pineau - the local fortified wine. Life doesn't get better than that. We aren't "pool people" but as the temperatures hit the mid thirties it was beautiful to be able to take the plunge. I read the most recent rather sniffy review - all things are subjective but I just can't agree. We most often stay in pricey hotels and much preferred the authentic and warm ambience of Les Hirondelles - far more relaxing. We hope to return next year.

“Disappointed”
Reviewed September 1, 2018 for a stay in August 2018

Nice garden and pool (although tiles very slippery). Verandah facing the garden is good. The house though is a bit tired. Whoever does the cleaning between guests isn't doing a very good job.

Difficult to respond to the vague adjective 'tired'(the house was completed
nine years ago and built from the original stone--see picture). All we can say is that this is the first adverse comment in eight years of renting. The overwhelming response has been outstandingly positive. The tiles are slippery when wet; that is why we have the strip of matting from the pool exit to the veranda. We have had the cleaning checked after the last guests and have been assured it has been done thoroughly. We think the review s gratuitously unpleasant and, yes, we are upset!

“Fabulous retreat for families”
Reviewed September 6, 2016 for a stay in August 2016

We stayed at Les Hirondelles at the end of August and everyone in our family couldn't believe what a fabulous house it is and that the pictures don't do it any justice. The house has everything you need and we didn't need for anything. The games room was great with a table tennis table, darts, football table and a small pool table. There was also a badminton set and inflatables for the pool which the kids loved. Most of the kids in our family were teenagers and if they weren't in the pool they were happy connecting to the wi-fi which is provided.
There is a lovey veranda where we spent most of out time and the kids were taking in turns to chill out in the hammock.
There is a Supermarket in Roullac only 10 minutes away in the car and a patisserie in the next village which was 5 minutes in a car or if your feeling more energetic, there are a couple of bikes which you can use. We also had days out in Cognac and Aubeterre-sur-Dronne which were beautiful and well worth a visit and only about an hour or so away.
Everyone in our family found the beds really comfortable and my Mum even commented that it was probably she has slept for a while.
We did have a problem with a leaking shower when we got there but a very nice man called Glenn called round the next day and sorted the problem for us. Both the owners and Glenn couldn't have been anymore accommodating and helpful and I would highly recommend this place to family and friends.

“relaxing getaway”
Reviewed August 12, 2016 for a stay in August 2016

very enjoyable holiday.the house has everything a family or group needs(no tv but didn't miss it).it has a very good swimming pool, nice size, crystal clear water and most importantly it's heated( a proper pool heater) for the fortnight we were there it stayed a constant 30c.it also benefits from a lovely covered veranda, perfect for eating or relaxing out of the hot sun.there is also a games room which has a good table tennis table an ok dart board and table football and a slightly disappointing pool table(it was alright but not for a serious game of pool).there are also several bikes available for guests to use.the property also benefits from 2 fridges which both have a freezer compartment, very handy with a large group.
having been to many areas of france i can confidently say this is one of the best locations for a holiday.the hamlet of Patreville is very quiet but within 10 min.drive there is a good sized supermarket in Rouillac, nearby there is a roman amphitheatre. 35 mins takes you to the lovely town of Cognac,20min further up the road is Saintes which has quite a few nice churches and roman sights ( another amphitheatre). about 30min east takes you to Angouleme(worth a visit).
we didn't eat out to often but would highly recommend 'restaurant le square' in Aigre, very good food at good prices.
from Calais it took about 9 hours ,that was with plenty of stops.
the owners we very easy to deal with, happy to answer any questions.if you have any problems whilst at the house you can contact the very helpful Glenn, who only lives 10min down the road.
in conclusion a well equipped house, lovely area the perfect family getaway.
the only minus about the house, myself and the wife both found the beds uncomfortable but that is a minor gripe.
