Private Tour: Luxembourg and Bouillon Day Trip from Brussels
Reviewed August 14, 2014

The Bock casemates are the vast underground system of passages and galleries at the Bock promontory and continue to be a major tourist attraction.
Can be visited from March to October from the Rue Sigefroid. The stairs down from the entrance lead to the huge archaeological crypt where wall plates give an overview of the history of the fortifications. More stairs lead down through the dungeons of Siegfried's old castle to the casemates themselves, a series of long tunnels down into the rock parallel to the road above. There are a number of lateral passages as well as chambers and balconies with openings to the north and south. Once emplacements for cannons, today they offer views of the Alzette valley below. The tour includes a visit to the living quarters of Marshal von Bender, the Habsburg officer who, at the age of 82, coordinated resistance to the French siege in 1794–95 which lasted almost eight months. The exit is via the Pont du château onto Rue Sosthène Weiss, once the castle moat.

A EUR 3 entry fee lets you explore an underground world and get the feel for what it must have been like for people defending the city. Wear good shoes for walking, as the ground is uneven, and there are some tight, dark spaces, but for those who are up for exploring a bit, thus is a cool spot and something you won't see everywhere.

We found this quite difficult to find but once we got there it was well worth the 3 Euro fee. You could spend a few hours wandering up and down the stairs and tunnels that there are to offer an in my opinion is a great insight into historic Luxemburg.

These Casemates are a warren of tunnels built into the rocky hillside in order to protect the city from invaders (thought they obviously didn't succeed too well).
Well worth walking round - allow about 30 minutes to see everything.
No good if you are insecure on your feet
Entrance included with the Luxembourg card
