Up on the hill is one of the largest fortified castles in Europe. Built in the
Romanesque style from 11th to 14th centuries. A Renaissance mansion
was added in the 17th century. Slowly the castle was more/less abandoned and started to ruin. Some restoration work started but soon it was left to rot. Not until the modern times in 1900, the restoration started after the Grand Duke Jean ceded the castle to the State in 1977. All restoration was done by 1990 as we see today.
PS. The most beautiful castle in Luxembourg.

“A castle with a view”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 20, 2013

This castle stands high on a hill overlooking the pretty town of Vianden. The views over Vianden and the surrounding area alone make it worthwhile walking up. And if you like visiting castles, this is one to visit. The castle tour is self guided (audio guide or leaflet) and most of the rooms which you tour are furnished or have displays. It takes 1-2 hours to see everything. Be aware there are a lot of stairs up and down when you are visiting the castle, but I enjoyed my visit.

“Excellent day out in Vianden, Luxembourg”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 13, 2013

Luxembourg is a small country but Vianden is most definitely a big attraction! It is located some ways out of the city. Vianden town is a very quaint and quiet cobble-stoned town in a very European manner. The castle stands mighty on a hill overlooking the little town. When you first approach it you can't help feel like it is something out of a fairy tale.
We took the "ski lift" ride up the hill, which was quite an experience in itself. Up at the top you get a magnificent view of the castle, the town and the surrounding forests and farmlands. There's a restaurant for having snacks and a light meal.
A 15 minute hike through the woods and we arrive at the Vianden castle. There was a medieval festival happening at the time and we were greeted upon entering by the boom of cannons! We must've missed a show as when we got to the courtyard area they were performing a flag dance cum acrobatics show. That was followed by a man dressed in full medieval castle costume showing off his magnificently beautiful trained owl and eagle. The birds were allowed to fly in full glory around the castle and returned when called.
A short while after there was a medieval folk show with sword fights, and then 3 beautifully costumed ladies performing juggling tricks and hoola hoops and a finally a medieval version of a rock band music!
Around the castle were plenty of stalls selling medieval trinkets. Some look very real, not at all cheesy touristy stuff. At the top level were displays showing the history and the restoration of the Vianden castle. And one very interesting room was where they had books and pictures drawn like the olden days fairy tale books. It's just like those books at the beginning of the Cinderella (or Shrek if you are from modern times) Disney movie. So very classical European!
One drawback though was that nothing was in English so you can only see and admire the shows and displays but not much details to fully appreciate everything.

“Definitely not worth it.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 13, 2013

On the drive there, the castle looked very picturesque with the backdrop of forested woods. However, up close, the walls were crumbling and as they were doing some construction work, was quite an a eyesore. Inside things were not much better. It was dirty, smelled, and the exhibits were not at all interesting and informative. Also, the floor did not feel stable. Definitely not worth it.
