“Great hotel for the single traveller!”
Reviewed July 14, 2009

I would say that this is an excellent hotel for the single traveller - it is situated in Floriana, near Valletta, and is roughly 5 minutes walk (uphill!) to the town. The hotel is close to the main bus terminus where all island buses return at end of their trips. The island is quite small and buses are efficient. I went to Mdina and Marsaxlokk by bus. The Ferry point to Sliema is about 5 minutes walk from the hotel, mostly downhill. The hotel has beautiful facilities, several restaurants and a large pool. The staff are welcoming, and above all kind! You are greeted every day at breakfast on the 4th floor, with views across to Manoel Island, where small boats and cruisers sail by - idyllic! The hotel has a manmade "beach" where you can swim in the sea. There is a spa and an indoor pool which would be good for winter breaks. The hotel is also used for conferences and business - while I was there there were two charity events held, the US airforce had staff staying, and all of the MTV crew were there as the MTV music festival was on - I saw Lady Gaga, and the Blackeyed Peas for free - a bonus! A very varied and interesting place to stay. Valletta is an interesting old town. Lots of history and amazing architecture. Good resort for singles - lots to see, but not so easy for anyone with walking difficulties as Valletta is very hilly and full of steps. Shops close at 7pm. If you are a young single and looking for a bit more night life take the bus to Sliema!

A very modern, nice and fashion hotel. Everything is high style. Personnel freindly and eager to help. Rooms are very large and the restaurants view at the sea. A wonderful hotel for a wonderful unforgettable stay.

I stayed at the Grand Excelsior with my family (4 adults, 2 toddlers) for a 1-week vacation in Malta. We chose this hotel because we wanted to be close to the city of Valletta and have sea view at the same time; also, we liked the idea of having both a (indoor and outdoor) pool area and access to a little beach from the hotel premise We had booked 2 sea front rooms and were assigned two rooms on the second floor towards the pool area (rooms 218 and 219).

Pros: The hotel is located on the north-western rim of Valletta’s peninsula and lies within walking distance of Valletta’s bus hub. The view over Marsamxett harbor and to Ta-Xbiex were stunning, and this applied to our room (balcony), to the outdoor pool area, and especially to the breakfast restaurant on the 4th floor and the other two restaurants on the 5th and 6th floor. The rooms are adequately sized (although not as roomy as in other 5-star hotels). The outdoor pool was quiet, clean and featured plenty of chaise lounges and sun umbrellas. The outdoor waiters were courteous and efficient. We had enjoyed one buffet dinner in the outdoor restaurant that was superb. The breakfast buffet was excellent with a wide choice of food. Housekeeping did their job well and were always friendly.

Cons: Large groups (weddings and benefit gala dinner) had their lively and loud open-air party on 3 out of the 7 nights we stood at the hotel – all of them approaching midnight. Also, the hotel then closed all dining facilities for all other regular hotel guests. This meant that on those nights, we had to dine somewhere else when we wanted to be outside, and it also meant that our kids had a hard time falling asleep. Since our room was on the 2nd floor and near the pool area, the (small) balcony was of little use to us. The bathroom featured just a small tub but no walk-in shower. The decor in the hotel, especially the bathrooms, is decrepit and showing heavy wear (see pics), and the air-conditioning is not working as you would expect - definitively substandard for a 5-star hotel. Also, we found the layout and the design of the pool area quite shabby with a leaking fountain, no green but a few scattered planted pots around the pool. The hotel is connected with Valletta by an extremely busy road that must be crossed if you want to walk to the central bus station or to the city. As there are no traffic lights, crossing that road with two toddlers becomes particularly challenging and dangerous during rush hours. Upon checking-out, the front desk person screwed up completely: she obviously was unfamiliar with the process, charged my credit card twice, and was unable to resolve the issue within a timely fashion.

In short: The Grand Excelsior definitely does not deserve 5 stars. The hotel employs junior people who – although friendly – are inexperienced and lack attention to detail. The location with a view over one of Valletta’s natural harbors is a big plus that sure made us feel the Mediterranean atmosphere. Do expect noise and sleeplessness on every outdoor party night but do not expect the management to give you a heads-up!

I have recently returned from a business trip in Malta and I stayed at Excelsior Grand Hotel it was outstanding. The overall experience everything from the service, decor, spa, restaurant, reception provided the most exceptional and consistently high standard. I have travelled extensively and stayed in 100's of hotel and this is by far the best hotel I have stayed in for many years. I just could not find any fault, which meant that I was truly able to realx and enjoy my trip to Malta.

The views from the hotel were breathtaking and location perfect in trems of closeness to airport and boat trips and social activities. Everything I wanted seemed to be close by and the staff were incredible helpful on advising me where to go. As a solo traveller I found it very safe and friendly and would definatly return as a single parent with my children and or a group of friends.

I also found the location and hotel very romantic and have recommend to my close friends for a their wedding as I know they will love it - as I certainly did !

We stayed using the Spring Offer in an Executive Room with access to a small dining area on the eighth floor where we had breakfast , pre-dinner drinks and afternoon tea (not used) - the room was directly outside the MD's offices.
We had not had a massage before and the free half hour back massage was a very enjoyable experience. My wife bought two other treatments that were equally pleasant.
I would recommend the daily cocktail at the Harbour View - we discovered some interesting new drinks using Maltese ingredients.
We had excellent dinners dinner in the Admiral's Landing - the buffet was lavish on the Saturday night and more than adequate on Sunday. There was an excellent guitar player on the Sunday.
We had some hassle with a wash basin that was slow to empty and a brandy missing from the mini bar but all that was sorted out to our satisfaction.
Service throughout the hotel was first class. There was always someone on the main door to welcome you and sometimes there were two people there to open the door and say "welcome".
The hotel had a wedding for 800 guests on the Saturday but you would hardly have noticed due to the grand size and style of the hotel and the very effective management of the event. The bride and groom arrived by boat to the jetty and the wedding party used the terraces around the pool for the band, bar and buffet.
We used this weekend break to celebrate our wedding anniversary and the hotel kindly provided wine and fruit. On the Monday we moved onto a villa in Mellieha for a week.

For the days we were there in the early half of June, the swimming pool was booked for various evening receptions. This meant a huge number of staff were busy setting up the pool area in the afternoons and re-arranging pool furniture back in the mornings. Contractors stop by in the afternoons to check the pool. Noise from an event on the 4th floor was blaring out of the PA system as the balcony doors were left open for smokers for hours. It was like being in the middle of a construction site. And when the pool events took place in the evenings. The noise continues till late in the night and could be heard from the bedrooms. .

The male concierge was arrogant and eager to fob our questions on dinner off by sending us to St Julian. Interestingly, this seems to be the same situation as another earlier review posted earlier this month.

The technician ,who came by to check the air conditioner in our room after we reported that it did not work in the night, told us before listening to what we had to say that we had not turned it on the right way and had not waited 10 minutes for the air con to work. Took us for idiots. He finally decided to check after we insisted that it was not working. Then took another 30 minutes to fix it.

The metallic covers for the juice containers in the breakfast buffet do not fit well and kept dropping on the floor. Each time they drop, service staff picked them up and placed them back without washing the covers. This happened in the 4 out of 5 mornings we were there.

Positives? Location. There were some good service staff - housekeeping, doormen, and a few lady service staff at the reception and concierge. But it is more due to their individual nature and personality than the hotel's training.
