“An Enjoyable Malta Experience”
Reviewed March 18, 2014

Have stayed at the Excelsior several times and for weeks at a time. The hotel is very comfortable. The personnel are an asset displaying all that is good about Malta. The serving staff in the morning are experienced, energetic and greet you with a genuine welcome. The staff in the lobby are well trained and sensitive. The cleaning team gets the job done. It must be recognized that this is a hotel in a mostly holiday resort - it is not New York, London or Hong Kong where the standard of expectation is that of full pay business traveler. The environment is relaxed, spacious and still exceedingly good. The hotel has a great vista over the Marsamxett Harbour, overlooking marinas and a good bit of history. The outside pool is large and even in prime season not overwhelmingly crowded. Swimming in the sea is possible and a delight. Other times in the year, there is a beautiful indoor pool. The rooms are spacious and up to date. All rooms have an interesting view. As another comment has said, the carpet cleaning could be better managed. Food is very good. The chefs at breakfast are friendly and accommodating. Snack service is good and dinner during the week is delightful. The hotel's Sunday buffet has a very good reputation on the Island. Consequently, it is very well attended and represents a venue for local family celebrations. There may be quieter alternatives on the Island. The hotel's location is almost uniquely great: it offers great walking access to Valletta with an increasingly diverse restaurant population of very good and value cuisine. Floriana enables easy transport to anywhere in the Island. The hotel area is always quiet. Like children, Sliema, St Julian's and Paceville can be seen but not heard. All in all, an excellent base for a visit to Malta.

Room Tip: Do not be deterred by lower floor rooms. Cooler in summer

Spent 5 nights here in two Executive rooms on a high floor with different harbour views. Albeit that the first views of the outside are unprepossessing, the rooms were fine- decently spacious, comfortable and everything worked. Decent WiFi in rooms. Buffet breakfast was extensive but the quality wasn't top notch in our opinion- certainly not good enough to tempt us to eat evening meals at the hotel. We tend to expect this in hotels and generally prefer to eat out. Service was generally pretty decent too- for example our car was almost always at the door by the time we got downstairs; the delightful lady at reception who helped us with our online check-in since their business room was closed, and the charming turn -down lady who when complimented on the bedside chocolates, left a few extras for my wife. Against that, the concierge was unhelpful , preoccupied and miserable, which we thought a strange combination on attributes for his position!

Should say also, as others have, that the walk up to the old city involves almost 100 steps and a bit of uphill thereafter. We did this walk several times and sometimes wished it were level. There is another way to walk there, along the harbour edge and then up steps into town. We tended to prefer that because of the better views- the climb's no less. A word of warning -they play Perry Como music at breakfast! Possibly it hurries people along a bit and frees up tables.

So, in our view this is a decent hotel where most things and most people do their jobs pretty well. Its not 5* in the sense of extraordinary luxury. But it is worthwhile and (fortunately) looks nicer on the inside that it looks at first glance from the outside.

Room Tip: High floors cost more, but get better views

The overall decor is very "Las vegas " huge sculptures , vast lounges and dining area, nothing cosy or relaxing.
We had a spacious room with partial view to the sea. Nice bathroom shame about the shower curtain! not very. 5stars. Why are hotel rooms fitted with beige carpet ? Which shows every stains .
Good buffet breakfast , bad coffee , and the most expensive expresso in Malta. 2.25 euros , for a coffee pod . Which cost me less than 3euros for 10 at home. It's the little thing like that which spoil it.
But we made the most of it and thoroughly enjoyed Valletta , actually enjoyed the whole of Malta, which is very beautiful, charming people and good food.

We decided to take a winter break in Malta and got a great deal on this hotel. The hotel sits just outside the walls of Valletta and a very short walk brings you to the bus station and the gates to the City. The hotel staff are extremely good, friendly and helpful. The room was a decent size and very clean. We had booked bed and breakfast and the breakfast is very good with lots of variety. The breakfast room overlooks the harbor and it is very pleasant.

There are lots of this to do and see in Malta. The island is very small and the best way to get around is to get a weekly bus ticket for 6 euros and this will take you anywhere . The bus service was very efficient and frequent.

Valletta is undergoing a big rebuilding programme around the walls of the City. We visited the cathedrals, the palace, the Lascaris war rooms, the Saluting Battery and travelled to Mdina on the bus. Mdina and Rabat is a must.

It is quite difficult to find somewhere to eat at night in Valletta and there are not many places open for evening meals. We found a great pizzeria called Margo's which is just past the palace and the pizza's and the service was excellent. We went to the Ordanance Pub and the meals were huge and reasonable priced.

The people of Malta are very friendly. Prices are very reasonable on this Island.

The island has developed in a very haphazard way. The resorts of Sliema and St Julian's could be anywhere is mainland Spain. They are very overdeveloped. St Paul's Bay is much nicer.

Overall we really enjoyed our week. The weather was quite cold but sunny and we did everything we planned to do. There are some outstanding churches such as Mosta Dome, St Paul's Shipwreck Church and the Cathedrals are lovely.

We enjoyed Malta very much but you cannot call the island beautiful.

Room Tip: We booked a luxury room but ask for a harbor side.

I paid €85 for a deluxe executive room including breakfast and wifi (corporate rate). I can just say this is a fantastic price in this luxury place in Floriana, close to Valetta. The insite restaurant is good, the breakfast is varied, a nice bar and the personal is really helfpful and sympatic. I will certainly return maybe also with the family during a holiday.

Very good hotel near old Valletta (with 93 steps and some hunderd meters uphill to go to the old town). For 20 € they organise a taxi to pick you up at the airport. Very beautifull reception, hall and bar. The personnel of the hotel is extremely friendly and helpfull. The rooms are OK and very clean. However, the bedlinnen is synthetic and thus warm. The rooms with frontal seaview have a very beautifull view on the marina and an inlet of the sea. Breakfast is good, but from a 5*-hotel you may expect that saucisages and mushrooms are not burned every day. The food in the 'à la carte restaurant: Admiral's landing' is excellent. Furthermore, I can recommand you between 15h and 17h the 'Afternoon tea' with scones and sandwiches, which is delicious. Prices in all the hotel are not expensive for a 5* hotel. The inside swimming pool is very well heated, but this is unfortunately not the case for the yacuzzi.

For me a very goor 4* hotel, but too much little details to talk about a 5* hotel.

Room Tip: Take a room with frontal seasview.

Reading previous reviews I had some concerns. After staying here for 4 nights I have to state that the Grand Excelsior is a 5 star hotel by all means. Staff is extremely friendly and attentive. Our room on the reception and lobby floor was large and spacious, with a great view of the harbor. Room was cleaned and serviced twice daily. However, they could refresh their towels inventory since those we used have seen better days. The bathroom was modern and large. It is a bit difficult to adjust the right temperature of the water. One has to be very careful since the "hot" is extremely strong and almost boiling. Internet connection was good in our room and in other areas of the hotel. TV set although flat was a bit outdated and not HD. But we did not come to Malta to watch TV. Breakfast buffet is tasty and varied. If we ever come to Malta again, we will definitely stay here.

Room Tip: Be careful when adjusting the water temperature in the bathroom.
