We have just returned after a lovely stay. Very high standards of service with plenty of polite, friendly staff to tend to your every need. The breakfast was superb with a vast variety of choice to feast on. The rooms are well furnished with large bed. The bathroom has both shower and bath. There is shaving kit, tooth brushes, comb and everything you will ever need. It's not far from the center of Valletta and all it's historic sites. You will not be disappointed.

We liked this hotel very much. At check-in we asked for an upgrade for a harbour view and they happily showed us the options. The full water view was well worth it. Good sized room with nice balcony. Large bathroom with bath and shower. Good variety of eating options and an excellent breakfast selection, although the coffee was terrible. Staff were friendly and helpful and there were good opportunities to arrange excursions. There is an excellent large swimming pool. Sadly it is a bit of a steep climb up the road to the town, which might deter the tired or less agile from going in to sample the excellent local restaurants in the evening. Overall though, a good experience.

Room Tip: Definitely get a water view

If you prefer Valetta over St. Juliens, as I do, this is the perfect place to stay at. At a walking distance from the city center (20 min.), the hotel is beautifully set on the seashore. It offers an amazing view, it's just great to enjoy the splendid view of the sea while having breakfast. The only minus is the poor coffee...and the fact that the espresso is paid separately! This quite annoyed me!
Went here many times and was always treated nice and I was happy of the conditions offered.

Room Tip: chose sea view

Being classified a five star hotel I am very disappointed with the hotel. It has obviously seen much better times. Room cleaning was poor, furniture and carpets chabby. Service staff very uninterested and obviously without experience. Breakfast was OK but espresso for example was coming on extra charge. Outside bar was closing at ¡6 p.m. depite of great weather and a lot of people. Would recommend to look for something better.

Just returned from visit to Malta. Stayed at Excelsior Grand hotel and loved it. Quite elegant, very comfortable, good restaurant and buffets. Excellent staff. The only very picky negative thing I have to say is the off-key and loud piano player/singer in the overhead bar/lounge intruded on dinner in the restaurant below to the point we couldn't carry on a conversation, let along have a pleasant dinner.

I feel it right to point out that we'd spent the previous 6 nights at the 5* Kempinski in Gozo so we couldn't but help make comparisons.
We'd planned our journey by hire car from Gozo to arrive at the Excelsior Grand Hotel at lunchtime for a 4 night stay that we'd booked in January. On arrival we received a big smiley welcome from the doorman who assisted in loading our luggage before directing me to their underground, secure and free car park. Great so far. We'd just finished checking in when we were approached by the customers service manager who advised that due to an electric fault on the whole wing of the hotel that our room for that night was no longer available. We couldn't believe it! The doorman that we'd spoken to knew nothing of this electrical fault nor did the two ladies on reception. Surely it had nothing to do with the block corporate booking of 200 Norwegians? Prepared to give them the benefit of doubt.
We were taken by hotel car to another hotel that wasn't even in Valletta, it was in St Julians and the journey took 35 minutes in awful traffic. Anyone who knows the area knows that St Julians and Valletta are very different. So we found ourselves in a hotel in St.Julians. having not yet had lunch in limbo land. Was it worth unpacking for just one night? Our plans for that day in Valletta were out of the window as was the early start we'd planned for Mdina the following day as the car was still at The Excelsior!
To compound matters we'd agreed to be collected from the hotel in St Julians at 10.30 the following morning. They'd hoped that the 'electrical fault' would be sorted by then and it allowed us to have breakfast and not disrupt the day too much. We waited for 20 minutes before calling the hotel to advise that we were waiting to be picked up. They told us that the driver was there but couldn't find us. Another 15 minutes passed when we were located by the driver who had been waiting at the front of the hotel although we weren't aware that this area existed as we were dropped off at the drop off zone on the sea facing side of the hotel. You would have assumed that we'd have been dropped off and collected from the same place! The driver in fairness was a very nice man and very concerned that he hadn't been able to find us.
On arrival at the Excelsior Grand Hotel we were quickly met by the hotel's general manager, Norbert Grixti. He apologised profusely and I believe was genuinely upset to have caused us to much trouble. We were again joined by the customer services manager who we'd spoken to the previous day. We were advised that we'd be given a much nicer room but that these were yet made up (completely understandable) and Mr Grixti offered us complimentary tour of the island rather than wait around. We acknowledged his generous offer but declined as we'd just been in the hotel car through the busy traffic and wanted to get some fresh air and relax why the room was sorted. We sat in the poolside bar and had a beer. The customer services manager was much more friendly and helpful now advising us when our room was ready and also offering us buffet lunch that evening. Much appreciated. We weren't completely going to write of the previous experience but they were doing all they could to put thing right and full credit to them.
The room that we'd been given was great. Big and airy will large twin beds. The bathroom was large with a large shower although the shower door didn't close properly. We had a good sized balcony with a lovely view across the water. Granted it wasn't very private or particularly secure with a low partition separating the balconies but we liked it and were very happy with our upgrade.
We didn't particularly enjoy breakfasts. There was a mass catering feel to things and a cacophony a cutlery and crockery. As most people came by lift (more later) they often arrived in groups between 6 & 10. Sometimes 2 young ladies would escort a couple or a family group to their tables but at other times a senior 'manager' would do it. I'm sure that he's done it a thousand times and it showed. He never seemed to 'engage' with people, few pleasantries and for example if confronted by a group of 3 couples just out of the lift would say 'two, two, two (gesticulating with 2 fingers to confirm that they were couples) before marching off into the seating area to allocate them to their tables. I watched as he did this several times, worst to an elderly couple where the chap obviously had walking difficulties struggled to catch up as this 'manager' stormed off with them in tow.
There was a choice of 1 fresh loaf on the first day, 2 on the second day and none on the 3rd day, just rolls. There was no smoked salmon just some dry looking smoked swordfish. The fresh fruit was OK. On the 2nd & 3 days they had mini eggs benedict which looked very nice. There was always a big queue for eggs and we couldn't be bothered to join the scrum. Coffee was free flowing but if you wanted an espresso it was an extra 2.45 euros. The supervisors/managers seemed to spend all their efforts scrutinising and chastising their your staff rather than engaging the customers and making sure that they were happy (in marked contrast to the other hotel)
The pool area is very spacious although lacks any sort of character. There are no trees or bushes for example to break things up, consequently there is no shelter from the wind. The staff at the 'Tiki' pool bar was great on the 1st day. After a long day trekking around Valletta on the 2nd day we needed to chill out in the afternoon. Disappointed then to find that the pool bar closed for the afternoon due to it being windy. My wife was disappointed too as the indoor pool was closed for maintenance.
On our 3rd & last day we had another tiring day and a beer by the pool was needed. This time I rang reception first before trekking down to the pool bar. They said it was definitely open. It wasn't. The indoor pool was still closed too. Although spacious and with great views, our balcony was in the shade for the majority of the day and was quite chilly in the wind. No one else was on their balcony. The bar areas inside are very beautiful but not the place for casual dress. So not really anywhere to relax in the afternoons.
Our main problem was with the lifts. Everyone had problems with the lifts. At first it was just tiresome, waiting for a lift to arrive that was going in the right direction only to find that when it did arrive it was full. There was no real viable alternative. The stairs was just an emergency stairway, concrete and not very nice. On the second day I was in the lift with a maid. The lift seemed to be playing up but she became very irate, worryingly so actually. I said that the doors would open if she allowed them to but she kept banging the panel saying , in English, 'they don't, the lifts never work, [--]! [--]!' at which point the doors opened and she stormed out. On the 3rd day my wife was I were in the lift with another guest. We pressed '7' and he pressed '9'. The doors closed, the lift moved and then stopped. All the panel lights went out. Nothing worked. This seemed to be for an age but was probably only for 60 seconds. We were about to press the emergency button when the door opened to the 6th floor. No-one was waiting. We reported the fault to the receptionists who were concerned and said they'd report it. We used the concrete stairs to go to breakfast the following morning!
Mr Grixti is a very nice and honourable man who when seeing my wife unaccompanied in the hotel lounge on our last evening took the time to speak to her and even arranged for a drink to be sent to her. I do wish that his efforts had been rewarded with a more satisfying experience and a happier customer.

Dear TKPUNK

We thank you for your time in sharing with us your feedback and once again we apologise for the inconvenience you experienced during your stay. It was unfortunate that the electrical fault in a small number of rooms occurred when the hotel was at full occupancy and we were not in a position to offer you another room. Given the circumstances we did all the was within our control to minimise the inconvenience and offered you a complimentary room upgrade to a Deluxe Seaview Room and a complimentary dinner.

Unfortunately during your stay we also experienced technical issues with one of our main guest lifts. In order to ensure that the matter is solved in the least possible time, the Lift manufacturer was requested to bring over to Malta a senior engineer. With regards the other matters, we are pleased to inform you that our Operations Department has already taken corrective action.

We hope that we will have another opportunity to host you again at the Grand Hotel Excelsior and make up for the inconvenience you experienced.

Kind regards
Brian

Recently enjoyed our stay at the Grand Excelsior.
Due to other circumstances arrived a day later and being fully booked the hotel kindly upgraded us to a two room suite. It is a big and busy hotel well situated with a close walk (if you dont mind the steps up the hill) to wonderful Vallettaa old town and bus terminus. We had a good view to the habour overlooking the pool so the balcony had lovely morning sun.
Staff were friendly and provide an excellent dinner recomendation to Giannini.
The public bus system is easy to navigate using the route map available from the Tourist Info office in town. 2.60 euro for a day ticket covers all lines and allows you to visit many parts of the island but be ready for a bouncy ride in some back streets. The North coast 15 then 222 gave a nice mix of new town and sea side views.
One area to improve is the hotel breakfast arrangements that while two large areas are used they prematurely tried to close one which resulted in waiting lines on Sat morning.
Otherwise an excellent stay.

Room Tip: Habour view room paticularly above above 7 have lovely views.
