“Resort hotel with city location”
Reviewed October 1, 2012

The first thing to say is that the Excelsior is a genuine 5 star experience. The little extras that can be missing are all delivered - from the door staff who never fail to open the door, to the turn down service at night, to the complimentary water delivered daily, to the spotlessly clean public areas - the Excelsior delivers.

I picked the hotel because it had the pools, spa and private beach for my wife but was just 5 minute walk in to the old town for me. A perfect combo of a resort hotel in the city. The rooms are large with balconies, the carpet could do with renewing, but otherwise a good standard of room, I would opt for a sea view if possible.

There are lots of good things to mention about the hotel, but I would give special mention to the small private beach, the quality of the breakfast buffet and the stunning views of the harbour and Manoel Island. Plus the staff who are eager to deliver a 5 star experience.

Of course there were minor niggles, I think the hotel would do well to have a wider range of cheaper pool snacks. The pool restaurant is nice but too expensive for many families staying at the hotel. Serving drinks outside at night would also be a nice touch.

Overall superb, I wouldn't hesitate to return, fine hotel and a lovely historic city.

Room Tip: Sea view room, 5th floor and upwards.

This complex is in a wonderful location and the views across the bay are wonderful. The pools are fantastic and private beach is a pleasant surprise. Prices of drinks are reasonable and service is friendly and efficient. I was not impressed at having to pay an advance 50 Euro per day to cover "extras". Surely it would be better to simply add up the extras and pay for them at the end of the stay? Also, sunbeds were crammed together on the beach and around the pool with absolutely no room between them despite the fact that only around a quarter of the beds were occupied. It would be better to stack half the beds and allow more space for guests. Breakfast was good but coffee was poor. You could of course pay extra for a freshly made espresso etc. I think this is a bit cheap for a 5-star resort! Air conditioning unit was very noisy but was necessary.

I've spent 5 terrific days of my life in this gorgeous hotel. Great location: walking distance to Valletta, a few minutes from main bus station with buses to all over Malta. Very good and king personal. The rooms are pretty large and very comfortable. The food is not the greatest.

Lovely hotel. Stayed there 4 nights as a surprise from the (now!) fiancé! Upgraded on arrival to sea view room. Lovely room, friendly staff. Welcomed with what you'd expect of a 5 star, refreshing flannel and alcohol free cocktail. Taken up to room. Air conditioning was effective and energy efficient due to key card activation. Luxurious bathroom with amazing shower. Had a leak in bathroom and were immediately moved and upgraded to an executive room with sun terrace! Bathroom even more amazing and room too! Loved the sun terrace! Staff were always friendly and if they made a minor slip up such as wrong food order they rectified it straight away. Only two gripes... First, one of the days the Tiki bar staff were poor. They took 20minutes to come over and even give us a drinks menu and about 10mins to bring over 2 beers... And we also requested the food menu which after 20 mins it still hadn't come and had to wait another 10 mins for it. The food then took another 20 mins (we sat there a long time!-thankfully the view and sunset was lovely!) the second gripe is that the deposit taken on the room in arrival at €50 a night (so €200 for us) took a very long time to become available again on my fiancé's account after we left Malta which was frustrating as we paid everything in cash throughout the week.
The spa is fantastic, fairly expensive but spas are... but very luxurious and relaxing. The food and drinks/cocktails were all great too and actually not any more expensive than a high street restaurant price in the UK.

Overall a great experience with a few minor minor niggles that should not put any traveller off this hotel.

Good five star hotel, great location near the city gates and buses, lovely food. If you can afford it, take a sea view room. The view is breathtaking, worth every penny! Both indoor and outdoor pools were nice. Tiki bar and restaurant were nice and bar and room service prices were sensible.

Had a fantastic stay here. Upon arrival we were upgraded to a sea view room. The room was perfect, the breakfast varied & filling, and the staff are very friendly & helpful. If you do have walking limitations there is a bit of climb up the steps to get to the road. Being British the sun & heat is a novelty, so combined with the steps it is not the easiest. The hotel is close to Valletta centre and near the bus terminal, very handy. The hotel was recommended to me and I will certainly recommend it.
