First impressions were good with "door-opening" polite and immaculately dressed staff. We were expecting a full sea view room but just had a sideways view of it and the room itself was poorly lit and not helped by the dark furniture and tired drapes and carpet. The bathroom was well appointed with bath and cubicle shower but with no shelves to put ones toiletries
or make-up on (as impossible to see to do this in bedroom). There were 3 small corner shelves in the shower cubicle but one would need to be a 6 foot person to reach the top one. Face cloths were provided on a hit or miss basis ditto the hand towels. The hair drier provided was sticky handled with much use and I was relieved that I had brought my own. We were on bed and breakfast terms and breakfast was excellent with a variety of dishes to suit all international tastes and staff were very pleasant. The outside amenities were very good with good sized pool and small private beach which we used to good effect. Overall feeling was that most money had been lavished on reception areas and outside to give favourable first impressions at the expense of the guest rooms. Main complaint though was the fact that there are over 80 steps to climb from the hotel entrance to the main gate out and as far as I can see no mention of this on their web site. As a reasonably fit 70 + year old I managed with one or two rest stops but what of the disabled? The only alternative was to risk life and limb to walk up a busy, steep service road having no pavement or to pay for taxis to and fro.The advertised complimentary hotel Shuttle Service actually ran twice a day, one at 1000 and one at 1800. Somebody should remind the hotel management that the definition of a shuttle service is something that runs constantly between two points! Overall I would rate this hotel as 4* but definitely not a 5* establishment

Room Tip: Ask for one with full harbour view

We choose the hotel because of the location and the reviews. We had a room with the king size bed on the 10 th floor and had a view of the front of the hotel. This hotel offers no free wifi in the room, but only at the central places. Because our room was located near the central reception, we got (free) wifi anyway. Breakfast is good, there is a lot of variety of food to choose from, including a man who will prepare your egg. We only had dinner once at the restaurant (buffet) but for that same price 30 euro pp (and quality) I rather would go out to the centre of Valletta for dinner.
The view from the pool and little "beach"is beautiful, you get good service of the Tiki Bar, because the hotel staf is walking around to get your order. And also good service from the guys who will set up your umbrella. Sometimes (on Saturdays) part of the pool will not be available for the guests. I had two Saturdays with weddings/reception. The pool and beach will be more crowded then, but there was still enough space.
It takes about (max) 10 minutes to walk to the central bus station of Valletta and to the centre of Valletta. It will cost you (max) 15 minutes to get to the top 10 restaurants of Valletta from Tripadvisor (see reviews restaurants). Very convenient.
We also took an 8 hour tour to Gozo with a chauffeur (Joseph) and car of the hotel. Joseph was an enthousiastic guide and the tour was very convenienant and pleasant.
I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel

Had a pleasent stay 11th-18th September but definately not 5*. Very dissapointed with the Restaurants/food/and the service was abismal. Our room on the 10th floor was well set out and had a great view, but a grubby beige carpet (who's idea to put beige plain carpet in a room??) The bathroom although large had no hooks to hang gowns and cloths and no shelf to put your toiletories.
Main bar was great, service excellent which is more than could be said for the main Restaurant. When eventually you got your wine, we were on our sweet!!!!
Food always very spicy and the names were changed for the same dishes. Not all customers want spicy foods every day!!
Outside in the Tiki bar we waited over half and hour to order lunch and gave up eventually. Staff when we left could not have cared less and smiling was not on the menu.
On the whole we were very dissapointed with our very expensive half board stay and although we are regular visitors to Malta we will not be staying here again.

Room Tip: Great view from the 10th floor, quite (except the peacocks) but they sleep the same times as humans...

We were pleasantly surprised with Excelsior, as we received a good deal on Booking.com. The hotel was resort-like we were upgraded to sea view (highly recommend), AMAZING views . The rooms did have tired carpet, but otherwise very lovely, homely and comfy beds. The wi-fi worked perfectly, and the outdoor pool was absolutely gorgeous with a view of the harbour. Location - close to town and short trip to the bus terminal. Service great with main doors opened for us everytime we entered! An absolutley relaxing experience, and and outstanding value for money (especially for this day and age). A couple of downpoints: 1. A pedestrian crosswalk is needed, hard to cross road when leave hotel. 2. The hotel prefers to push it's own services and these could be hidden extras if you didn't have the money (we just walked to the bus stop which was around the corner, and buses took us everywhere). 3. We had room service one night but the cheese was dried out like it'd been unpacked in the morning - not sure if this was a one off? Minor niggles, and we would definetley stay again - we loved it here, so relaxing!!

We are just coming to the end of a seven day holiday at the Excelsior. We found the buffet breakfast quite well stocked, however had to wait to be seated every morning even when there where tables available. One morning we went to the usual restaurant but were redirected to a different one without prior warning. My husband was shown eventually to seat which when he sat down was soakin wet. He was given anither seat but no apology. As I sit here by the beautiful pool my quiet is broken by an employee power washing seats off at 11.27 am. Is that really necessary. Tv is disappointing whilst we dont watch much tv there are only 3 english speaking channels available two of which are news programmes. I cannot call this five star by any stretch of the imagination.

We stayed six nights at the Grant Excelsior Hotel during late September (15-21). We found the people to be very friendly and it seems as if everyone speaks English. The room we stayed in had a spectacular view of the Mediterranean Sea (room 1068). The bed was great and the bathroom was large for European standards. Our room came with a breakfast buffet that provided service until 10:30 am. The seafood was great as were the traditional Maltese foods such as the rabbit stew. There are many excursions that can be booked from the hotel (e.g., Blue Lagoon on the island of Comino). We booked a five-hour private tour for $120 Euros which took us to the Blue Grotto, Mdina, the fishing village of Marsaxlokk and a few other places. Some of these attractions do close early. For example the Blue Grotto can involve touring by small boat into the grotto. However, this service ends at 5 pm so don't save this one until last if you want to do this. The fishing village should also be visited early during the day. The hotel is near the palace, the War museum, St Johns Co-Cathedral, the Malta experience film, and St Elmo's, La Sacrainfermia, and the bus stop. Transportation by bus is very inexpensive (less than 3 Euros/day) and since Malta is small, it is possible to use this service to get around the island.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that faces the sea.
