“Don't miss this on your way from the Sliema ferry to Valletta !”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 30, 2013

If you take the the Sliema - Valletta ferry and choose not to spend 1 euro on the minibus to Valletta town centre but decide to walk; just before you reach the top of the slope you'll see a sign carved into the wall on the right saying 'Fortress Builders' with 'Fortifications Interpretation Centre' over the entrance. If you would like to know everything about the defences surrounding Valletta before you go to see them, you could not spend a better 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Knowledgable staff, interesting and absorbing exhibits, interactive screens to take you in as much depth as you wish or you can just browse. There is no cafe as yet but there are plans for one. It is Government sponsored and FREE.
If you do miss it on the way in, catch it on the way back to the ferry. I found the details in the Bradt Travel Guide by Juliet Rix from my local library which is as up to date and comprehensive as any guide on Malta.

“And its Free !”

We discovered the center on our very last day returning to the ferry stage. Perhaps not for everyone. But if you are interested in the history fortifications, then it is a must.
The models and displays inside are brilliant, with a fantastic view from the top.
Well worth a stop.

“"Not to be missed!"”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 28, 2013

Only by chance was the entrance noticed when arriving in Valletta from the Sliema ferry. Opened in February 2013 and no money left for advertising! If you love military fortifications in Malta this is the best I know of. Modern, cool, beautifully explained and lots of visual stimulus. The models, interactive digital displays and much more are a feast. Now a 'snowy-top' myself there was much to learn. If younger the explanations were sublime. Easy to visit many times and not see it all. Best of luck with funding so the final stages are added.

“Informative, entertaining and... free!”

Could be tricky to find - come thru Valetta gate and ahead of you (on left) will be the Wembley store. Turn left and carry on till you reach the harbour. The rather understated entrance will be on your left.

At the ground floor entrance all you can really see is part of the old gate to the city and this on it's own does not really entice you to linger ( I saw several people peer in and quickly scurry back out as if they were unsure that they were permitted to be there). Fortunately, in our case, the resident guide, Paul, was quick to greet to greet us and offer to show us around.

Paul was superb - a man with a passion for his job and keen to impart his knowledge to others. When you think that you can pay around 10 euros entry at other attractions and have no assistance then this just makes it even better.

Even without the effusive host, the displays all had large boards with plenty of information about each exhibit, giving great background and context. Apparently the place has only recently opened and this was indeed reflected in the grand modern surroundings and the nature of the displays e.g. lots of scale models and even a huge walk-on glass map of Valetta.

Over three floors a picture is gradually built up about the history of warfare on the island, especially around Valetta, and the battlements and weapons that have been used.

We spent around two hours there and aside from one other person who arrived part-way thru our visit, we (albeit a tad-guiltily I confess) enjoyed the exclusive attention of the guide.

The rather clumsy title of this attraction and it's seeming lack of promotion, do not do it justice - go see for yourself, you should be impressed...
