If you take the the Sliema - Valletta ferry and choose not to spend 1 euro on the minibus to Valletta town centre but decide to walk; just before you reach the top of the slope you'll see a sign carved into the wall on the right saying 'Fortress Builders' with 'Fortifications Interpretation Centre' over the entrance. If you would like to know everything about the defences surrounding Valletta before you go to see them, you could not spend a better 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Knowledgable staff, interesting and absorbing exhibits, interactive screens to take you in as much depth as you wish or you can just browse. There is no cafe as yet but there are plans for one. It is Government sponsored and FREE.
If you do miss it on the way in, catch it on the way back to the ferry. I found the details in the Bradt Travel Guide by Juliet Rix from my local library which is as up to date and comprehensive as any guide on Malta.
