“Justice done to ancient history”
Reviewed January 4, 2014

A compact and very well explained insight into Malta's fascinating distant past. The section on the cart ruts is particularly outstanding. The staff were also very helpful. A great introduction and incentive to visiting the ancient sites throughout Malta.

“Guides would help”
Reviewed December 30, 2013

Malta has such a treasure-trove of archaeology, but this Museum does not engage the visitor as much as it could. However, the cartoons are hilarious and helpful! Please consider installing some interactive displays to explain and enhance your treasures. Also, actual knowledgeable Guides would enliven the visit and capture viewers' interest.

Excellent display of exhibits from the Malta temples. Some of the enigmatic statues and religious artefacts some over 5000 years old.

“The real deal”
Reviewed December 15, 2013

This is an excellent museum. I was a bit worried that it was going to be big and rambling like the British Museum (where I always get confused about where I am in history) but it was really well laid out and not too big so you don't feel lost in it.

The displays on the Temple Period and the prehistory of Malta were really well laid out, and very informative - I would recommend going here before you visit too many of the temples, because it really helps you get it all in context. The museum also has a large number of the actual temple artefacts in it (some of the ones you see in the temples themselves are replicas). This includes the Sleeping Lady from the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum as well as many of the other carved human figures and lots of the original carvings from the temple structures.

Upstairs there are some interesting displays on the Phonecians.

“National museum of archaeology”

Fascinating collection from Neolithic to Phoenician. The prehistoric temple finds are stunning esp the female figurines and carved stones but the museum needs a shop to increase income and improve the presentation.
