Owner description: If you fancy seeing something a little bit different when visiting Valletta go to Casa Rocca Piccola. Often described as a ‘living museum’ it is the only privately owned palace open to the public in the city. Built over 400 years ago for a Knight of Malta, Don Pietro La Rocca it is now the ancestral home of a Maltese Noble family. On your tour the guides will point out interesting things to see such as an 18th Century golden Sedan Chair which was carried around Valletta by Turkish slaves! There are literally hundreds of magnificent objects to see including modern paintings interspersed with the ancestral portraits of the Marquises de Piro and the Barons of Budach. You will also see a network of tunnels cut out from the rock under Casa Rocca Piccola which were used as Bomb Shelters in World War 2. Over 100 people sheltered here from the Nazi bombs that poured on Valletta. To finish your tour in the cellars of the house there is a delightful Sicilian restaurant called La Giara.

Whether it's the laid out table or the bomb shelters, the art on the walls or the old furniture, this is an interesting "casa" to explore. The tour quide was great in putting all that we looked at in the historical persepctive of the town.

I couldn't work out whether this was a visit to an historic site or a pure commercial venture on the part of the aristocratic owners. I didn't think the house itself was up to much although there were some interesting artefacts here and there

could really be anywhere

It was interesting to see how the houses in the area are built and lived in. An interesting experience.

This was the best visit of our holiday. It is a beautiful family house and full of interesting artefacts. The guide was very well informed allow enough time to see everything in each room and could answer any question. The highlight of the visit was at the end when the owners of the house met us in the courtyard garden and offered Prosecco or a soft drink to celebrate tourism in Malta. This act of hospitality made for a perfect visit.

Thank you for your kind words about the tour at Casa Rocca Piccola. We were serving Prosecco to promote European Heritage Days 2013 and we got great feedback from everyone who visited on that weekend!

We visited this house as part of a tour arranged by the cruise ship. It was interesting to see. The interesting part was the underground tunnel used as a bomb shelter. It also gave some insight into life during those times.
