“It's like staying with friends.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 4, 2014

I'm a frequent visitor to Malta and tried for ages to book into the British Hotel. I finally made it and it was certainly worth the wait.

OK, so it's not the poshest place in town, but it doesn't pretend to be. It's a clean, functional, very friendly family-run place in a great location - especially if you like steps ;-)

I only ever ate breakfast there and it may not be inspiring but it's wholesome and plentiful and there's any amount of cafes and pastizzerija a few minutes walk away if you really want something more authentic or filling.

I've rated it 5/5, not because it's the best place I've ever been but because I think it's the best in its class. It's more like staying with friends than staying in an hotel and it's high on my list of places to stay when I next visit.

Room Tip: Take a travel kettle.

The view was worth the stay alone, the location was great, far enough off republic street to avoid the cruise ship tourists. Contenintal breakfast is just that, had better, had worse.( How often do you go to your local hotel for food at home?) If you go to a hotel just for the food and decor then this is not this place for you. If you go for a place to sleep with a great view this is the place to be. The hotel was great value, dated but clean, lots of stairs, but if you don't like stairs Valletta is not the place for you.(then again i came to malta to hike) i have been in much smaller lifts in Paris(just room for two people thin people face to face) over all experience was good. A basic two star hotel. I would stay again

Room Tip: Harbor view a must!

I went to Valletta on business and was booked into the British hotel very close to Victoria Gate.
The place needs some serious money spent on it, it hasn't seen a coat of paint in years. There were broken and loose floor tiles everywhere. Exposed electric and a rabbit warren of stairs.
The breakfast was very bad and the continental selection consisted of a plate of cheese and two plates of meat, cornflakes, bread and jam. The covers on the tables must be at least 30 years old and were stained and faded. The hooks holding the table covers on were rusty.
My room had dirty walls and two single beds. The bedding was worn out and there were no mattress covers. The staff were friendly apart from the 'chef' and I say that in the broadest terms, he was scruffy and miserable and showed little pride in his (lack of) catering skills.
There was a lot of building working going on in neighbouring properties which resulted in lots of banging and drilling.
This is probably one of the worst hotels I have every stayed in. I will tell my secretary to read trip advisor before booking anywhere again.

Room Tip: If you must stay in this dump, ask for a sea view room.

I highly recommend the British Hotel. If I ever return to Malta, this where I'll stay, hands down. I'm tempted to give it five stars, but there was one minor problem - the food kind of sucks. The breakfast is edible, but uninspired. The dinner we had was lousy. But that wasn't a problem because we're fast learners. We ate dinner elsewhere after the first night.

But the hotel is really neat. There are all sorts of funky staircases and oddball architectural elements. The hotel, like Malta, is mysterious and fun. We had a balcony overlooking the harbor. The view was tremendous. It was so beautiful that we awoke early to watch the sun rise. It's a great location. It's a great starting point for your explorations.

The staff is super helpful. They gave us great advice.

I loved the little wi-fi lounge with its retro late 1960s, early 1970s vibe. The whole place has an old, vintage, semi-beat up vibe. I hope they don't change the decor. It's perfect. (If you desire a hotel with perfect paint, unblemished walls and an overall perfectly manicured, boring look like every chain hotel located off the interstate in Anywhere, USA, then stay somewhere else. The British Hotel has character that comes from age.)

Just have your dinner down the street, then you can give the British Hotel the five stars it deserves.

The British Hotel is in a good location in Valetta, right near the harbour and Republic Street but it is at the bottom of a million stairs so, if mobility is an issue for you, it could be a problem. It's a basic hotel for sure - very few amenities (bring your own shampoo and conditioner, no minibar, etc.) Our room was on the top floor and had terraces with beautiful city views but, for some reason, it was insanely noisy at night. I think maybe the wind was blowing some sort of metal around but there were loud clangs the whole entire night. The front desk staff were helpful and there is free wifi in the restaurant and bar. The breakfast is very basic but fine. You get what you expect from a 2-star hotel but, if you're just looking for an affordable place in Valetta, British Hotel is great.

I would like to thank you for your comments and also maybe clarify one thing. We do provide shampoo , soap and shower gel in the rooms , we have been doing that since January this year. If by chance you did not have any I appolgise however we do provide them. You can ask for them at reception. We do not have mini bars ...they are usually found in some 3 star hotels and above. thanks David Montebello

We stayed here as we wanted to enjoy carnival on the sat night. Yes it is a bit tired but everyone we came across was very friendly and our room was cosy but oh my god up about a billion stairs to the to of the hotel.... The view was worth it tho!!!! It is a cheap and cheerful hotel just be warned about the mountain if you are in room 217!!!

The British Hotel in Valletta has a restaurant with the most magnificent view of the wonderful Grand Harbour. Apart from worth a visit for the view only, the food was tasty & generous & reminiscent of homemade food. The menu offers a variety of Maltese dishes & the usual Pasta/ Meat dishes. It's slightly on the expensive side but I guess the view makes it worthwhile. The service was friendly & efficient. It was unfortunate that the restaurant was only occupied by 4 people during a peak lunch hour. As for the decor, the restaurant clearly hasn't moved on with the times although the prices have! The soft furnishings would benefit from a little face lift (new tablecloths would be nice). It is however a lovely place to spend your lunch hour in........sit by the windows :-)
