“Great hotel”
Reviewed October 23, 2013

Stayed at this hotel for 5 nights and had a room with a view of the Grand Harbour. The room was recently renovated and suited us very well. The staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was very good, with cereal, meats bread, yoghurts, fruit etc. Malta is a beautiful Island and would highly recommend it as a vacation destination. The Hotel is in a great location for shopping, dining and visiting the historical sites. The lobby and breakfast area are being renovated this year (Nov/2013). I look forward to my return visit to Malta and the Grand Harbour Hotel.

If you're looking for five stars, swimming pools, beaches or evening entertainment, this hotel isn't for you. However it has a well earned reputation for being an excellent place to stay in Valletta. It is a privately owned family run establishment and everyone was very friendly and helpful. If you need to know something about the island, they can probably help you and if you should encounter a problem with your room, they will do their best to sort it out.

When checking the room prices at other establishments in Valletta, this was one of the best value places we could find.

The guest rooms have been refurbished since we stayed there last year. Admittedly the rooms are on the small size, but we only used ours as a base and spent most of our time exploring this beautiful island. Last year we chose a room with a harbour view (probably one of the most spectacular views of the harbour from any hotel in Valletta), but this year we opted for a less expensive room at the back of the premises overlooking Urusla Street which leads up towards the Upper Barrakka Gardens.

All rooms have now been fitted with air-conditioning and we were grateful for this, as it was very hot while we were there. The en-suite shower room/lavatory was compact and well laid out, making the best use of the available space. The toilet is a modern "square" design which looks good but doesn't make for a comfortable seat (because our backsides are nearer to being oval rather than square).

There was a good selection of food on offer at the buffet style breakfast;- coffee or tea, cereal, fresh fruit, yoghurt, bread, marmalade or jam, fruit juice, ham/meat slices, cakes, etc.

The Barrakka Gardens are within sight of the rooms that overlook the harbour and are just a five minute walk up the hill. The gardens are worth a visit at 12 noon to see (and hear) the noon gun being fired (muzzle loading cannons that were converted at Woolwich Arsenal to breech loading -- the only ones of this type that I have ever seen).

Another five minutes from the gardens and one is at the main bus terminus. Buy a seven day ticket for 12 Euros and you can use any of the Arriva buses anywhere on the island at any time that suits you -- the best bus service we have ever come across.

The roof terrace at the hotel is worth using occasionally. Great views of the harbour and the three cities opposite from such a high vantage point. There are tables and chairs up there, but no umbrellas because the occasional gust of wind is likely to (and has in the past) lift them up and drop them down into the street below.

By next year the public areas of the hotel are to be refurbished and updated and the outside of the building (shutters, etc.) will be sorted as well. We hope that the owners will get the necessary permissions to carry out the work that they have planned, because this should make some very good improvements. We will return again next year.

Room Tip: A room with a view of the Grand Harbour is worth paying a bit extra for.

Great location and with fantastic views of the Grand Harbour. Even if you have a room at the back of the hotel, they have a communal roof terrace anyway. PS: the rooms are more expensive at the front, and they even have rooms on the 5th floor with private balconies.
The staff were friendly, helpful and polite, and it felt like a family run business which was more personal.
The rooms were clean, nicely furnished and offered TV and air con. (You will need air con in Malta!! We went in October and it was still humid)

Sadly, the lobby and breakfast area were a bit shabby and in need of a makeover. In fact, I did spot a notice saying 'about to refurbish', so maybe they will sort it soon!
Also the breakfasts were very basic! Bread, cereal, yoghurt, tea and coffee. And it would have been nice to have breakfast on the roof terrace with those amazing views.
Overall, it just wasnt worth the 68 euro price tag. (Bear in mind, Malta is not an expensive country.)

Room Tip: The rooms at the back are approx 10 euros cheaper with a view of a lovely little steep street, but o...

This is a small, family run, hotel close to all the attractions of Valetta as well as the bus station for trips further afield. Our room was excellent, with efficient aircon, a new shower room and our own roof terrace with views over to the three cities across Grand Harbour. All the staff were helpful and friendly and had time to talk. The restaurant is being refurbished but breakfast was very good and served very quickly. I would recommend the Grand Harbour to anyone who is not interested in heated swimming pools, spas etc. but to use as a base to explore Malta. For those not fit enough to cope with Valetta's steps, taxis can come to the front door of the hotel.

Room Tip: We had room 605 which has its own roof terrace. The double glazing is good at reducing the church be...

Excellent location, great view, the staff were nice and the room was clean (with AC).
Wi-fi were not working all the time and the breakfast could be healthier.
I would definitely return to this hotel.

Upon arriving at the hotel we were a bit worried because of the dated 70's look of the hotel lobby. But we soon changed our mind when we entered the room which had been fully renovated with some style. The room had two balconies overseeing the three cities, giving us breath taking views. The service was excellent and we actually got to like the 70's look of the lobby and dinning room witch transported us every time to a bygone era. The breakfast was normal, with all the expected componentes, but did not amaze. Overall a good experience so I must recommend.

I stayed in Grand Harbour hotel on 5 September. Because of the rating on tripadvisor, I didn't have much expectation before I check-in. However, the room quality and service were way better than I expected. The gentleman in front desk was so nice, friendly and helpful. The room and bathroom were very clean. Moreover, the location is very convenient, very short walking distance to bus station, town center and right next to Grand Harbour. The breakfast was adequate and simple but didn't bother me too much. Overall I highly recommend this hotel for its value and location.I will def. stay with them if I visit Malta again.

ps Also try this restaurant "Nenu the Artisan Baker", not far from the hotel and the food is superb.
