Castille Hotel
Ranked #9 of 15 Hotels in Valletta
Reviewed April 7, 2013

I have stayed in this hotel for 2 nights, while being on a buisness trip to Valletta.
My overall rating of this hotel is average, but in some issues I would say it is poor, considering that this place is a three star hotel. But to start with the positive sides of this place:
- it has a great location: in walking distance from the main bus terminal in Valletta and just next to Upper Barrakka Gardens
- breakfast is served on the rooftop with a fantastic view on Valletta (a good variety of things to eat, but the quality of food is rather medium)
- the personel is really helpful and nice

Coming to the negatives I will concentrate on the room in which I have stayed. The room was spacious, but defenitely needed some fresh paint on the walls. In the bathroom the ceiling was covered with styrofoam, with blurred spots on it- terrible look. Lack of hot water is also a problem (you have to wait a couple of minutes before the water reaches a temperature that is tolarated to take a shower). I had a twin bed in which one of the mattresses was higher than the other. Sleeping on it alone didn't bother me, but it could be a seen as a disadvantage for a couple sleeping together.
I haven't tried the meals served in the restaurant, so can't comment on that, but some locals told me that the quality of the food isn't good.
And finally the price...... 120 Euro per night is a price for which I personally would require a much better standard in terms of overall cleanliness and tidiness of the room.

Hotel is very old fashioned- which works well in the classic and expensive-looking looking marble landings and grand stairwells but not so much in the rooms. Perhaps some people like old furniture and maybe it's very high quality stuff! Not sure.

The current price for tonight on booking.com is €100 so given the dated room i expected a great breakfast. It was fairly poor. Weak coffee. No cooked meats just hot baked beans and hard poached eggs. decent bread selection. Couple of cheeses (one of which processed wrapped squares) and couple of cold meats. 1 yoghurt, some cereals and juices.

Having said that I have been comfortable here and the staff have been exceptionally courteous and friendly. They give the impression of having worked here for many years and genuinely caring about their guests. The location next to the little park and gun battery is brilliant, amazing view over the grand harbour less than 1 minute away. Bus station and shopping streets also very close.
I wouldn't pay €100 but for the €55 that I did pay, it's fine and I'd be happy to stay again if better options weren't available.

Well situated for all the city sights. However a bit grubby, feels as though it could do with a bit of a clean and an update. Booked a twin room, beds ok although duvet was stained in places and should of had a cover, kept wondering who had been sleeping under it before me !

If you are willing to compromise for the position, it's a good choice.

This old hotel is most conveniently situated in the centre of Valletta. It was good value. The staff were all friendly, welcoming and helpful.
Breakfast, served in the rooftop restaurant was entirely acceptable. Dinner there was rather less acceptaBLE. The food was well cooked and the service efficient. But dinner was BORING! It lacked even a little bit of pizzazz!

The location of the hotel couldn't be better. It is only a very short walk to the major attractions in Valletta and the Main Bus Terminal. Regarding the hotel itself...the rooms are dated and the furniture tended to be too big for the size of the room. I had a single room with two beds and large furniture...it was a bit difficult to move around.

The water heater in my room was also a little issue. Maybe the water heater was broken but it took a good 10 minutes before hot water started to come out.

Breakfast was quite good and is served on the rooftop with an excellent of the city and Grand Harbor.

Overall, the hotel was more than satisfactory for me and despite the issue with the water heater and the fact the place is rather dated, it was worth staying in.

The place is one thing and that is for sure. Friendly. Staff at the reception is super nice and welcoming. They make your stay really pleasant.

The hotel is a bit 'tired'. The potential is amazing and the location hard to beat, but it would require some investment in beds, windows, furniture etc. Also the shower facilities are simply not up to date anymore. But, if all this would be renovated it would not bee a 3 star but definitely a4 star hotel and hence the price would rise etc.

The roof top restaurant, where breakfast is served has an amazing view. The breakfast is nothing to write home about but solid and should get you over the day until lunch.

Room Tip: Try to get a higher floor room and avoid the rooms adjacent to the stairs.

The hotel is located in an excellent location in Valletta and the hotel reception staff were very nice and helpful. The hotel has allot of potential but it has a very old decor. The rooms are very basic - only a bed, TV, and bathroom. Wi-Fi was available but the signal intermittently dropped out which made Skype calls very frustrating. No room tea / coffee facilities. No bar fridge. TV was limited to only 1 channel in English (BBC World news). Our room had old creaky beds, an old lamp, and a radio that looked like it survived the bombing of WW2. The hot water worked intermittently, and we had a few cold showers in our week. The room door was old fashioned key locked, and was difficult to open and close. We were able to get an iron and ironing board from reception (none available in room), but the ironing board was almost falling apart and the iron only worked if you pressed the plug hard into the power socket. Breakfast was included in the cost - but is wasn't particularly fancy. Hot food was a greasy fry-up, bread was dry, total lack of culinary presentation and creativity. The restaurant staff could benefit from a customer service program and some standards. I would stay here again if I needed budget no frills accommodation in Valletta - especially if traveling alone.
