“Great location, sub-average hotel”
Reviewed July 3, 2012

Use only in case of emergency. If you are stuck with no booking in Valletta, Castille is a handy choice, meters away from buses and right near the pedestrianized area of the old city. Manage your expectations in terms of the room interior. But with so many things to go visit in Valletta, you won't spend much in the hotel anyway.
If the weather is nice and they serve breakfast on the top roof, chose to sit outside, the fantastic port view makes it well worth enduring the sun.
The staff is courteous and very helpful.

Room Tip: No idea if they have any.

I was made very welcome at check in and upgraded even though my stay was only one night. Both of the people with whom I had dealings on reception were very helpful and friendly even offering to make me a coffee and sandwich on the morning I had a very early departure (well before breakfast was served).
The room was much as I'd expected from having read reviews on TA - a bit dated but clean and comfortable. I had no problems sleeping; the bed was comfortable and the air conditioning efficient and not too noisy.
Situation is excellent for exploring Valletta or just watching the world go by in the Upper Barrakka Gardens just a few paces from the hotel.
The roof top restaurant is great for the view over the city and harbour. Food and service could be improved here though - it was adequate but by no means exceptional.
For the situation, helpfulness of reception staff, comfort and price this hotel represents very good value.

Room Tip: I was in room 47 - great views

This was not a good experience for us, but the price was very nice. The staff were all very pleasant; however, the person who checked us in told us she didn't have time to give us a city map, deal with the air conditioning problem, or anything else because she was expecting 60 people at any moment and she would be "overwhelmed." Those 60 people hadn't materialized by the time we had stowed our luggage and left to get a map at the tourist office . . .
The location is very good. It is close to the city gate and, thus, the bus station and only a short stroll from other points of interest in Valletta. One of the streets to access it was blocked for pavement construction making it a little longer distance to the gates, but, still it was not a problem.
The room itself was a problem. It was very large and had a nice view of the street below. Those are the only positive things I can think of to say. The beds were very soft, enough to be non-supportive. The room decor was very outdated, but I really don't expect much in this department for a budget hotel. The bathroom wasn't very clean. There is only a handheld shower with no place to anchor the showerhead for a standing shower. One morning, there was no hot water for 3/4 of the shower. There is no hairdryer. The air conditioning was not powerful enough to really cool the room. There were only two plugs for the whole room; not quite enough with all the electronics we travel with these days.
The breakfast was at the top of the hotel and was ok. The view from the breakfast room was good. There is an elevator.
I would not recommend this hotel.

The Castille is an old hotel, there's not a lot of modernisation although there is a lift. We were a bunch of pensioners (think 'Last of the Summer Wine') on our annual trip. Rooms were fine, roomy, not too many electricity sockets, wifi OK, small bathroom, not a great shower, ie OK for 2 or 3 days. Staff very friendly. The real plus point is the terrace on the top floor, ideal for breakfast & looking over the harbour. Good location for town & buses, I'd stay there again.

Stayed at the Castille for a short break back in February to celebrate my friend's mother's 80th Birthday. We were a party of nine of mixed ages, and Ronaldo the proprietor accommodated us all on the same floor. I shared a room with the 'birthday girl' and her daughter. The room was a good size and had a 'balcony' view of the harbour, which was awsome. We stayed on a bed and breakfast basis, and the breakfast was very good ranging from eggs fried/scrambled, bacon, cheeses, cereals, toast, fruit, yoghurt etc., and as mentioned in previous reviews, whilst having breakfast, the view is awsome! We did dine in one evening at the Hotel, and I for one, really enjoyed the meal. There's much to see in Malta which is very interesting. We did do two open top bus tours, which cost about 11 euro each, and saw most of what there is to see in Malta. The weather at the time wasn't brilliant, but it didn't stop us from going 'out and about' and seeing all the sights, Mdina and Mosta especially. All in all, I would certainly recommend the Castille Hotel for its location and friendliness, and if I was to return to Valleta, I would certainly stay at the Castille.

It's all true what the other reviews tell about the Castille Hotel.
It is very close to the historic centre (not even three minutes walk), close to the bus terminal (ten minutes walk), the building itself is indeed part of the history, the staff is incredibly friendly and the view on the roof terrace is amazing.
But, the rooms and the bathrooms are in very urgent need of refurbishment.
Our first room had a view, but was on the first floor right across the marble stairs so we could hear everything what was happening in the lobby. So, after one night we immediately got another room, with no view, but with a decent bathroom (the other bathroom was incredibly small).
So, if you don't mind the old and worn out rooms, it is a perfect stay for a very reasonable price.

Some practical information:

You can order a taxi via the hotel to pick you up from the airport. It costs 18 euros, and it's worth the money because the bus has a lot of stops.

We went during spring and after 5 PM we couldn't find any sunny terrace. But the rooftop terrace is sunny until seven and is open even when the restaurant is closed. And you can buy some wine in the pub below or in the little shop further down the road (they have cold wine if you ask for it).

The restaurant in the cellars (La cave) is very good, but when we went there, there weren't many people so it was a bit gloomy. Try the ravioli filled with fish, it is delicious.

Another great place for a drink or meals is the terrace of Luciano/Cettina, on te right handside of the entrance of the cathedral. It looks like a tourist trap, but the rosé wine was cold and more than ok, for less than 2 euro. The octopus is the best I have ever eaten and the maltese platter is an excellent lunch.

Enjoy it!
