Owner description: Built between 1573 and 1577, this cathedral contains two masterpieces by Caravaggio.

I had thought the cathedral was included in our multi-site pass. When we got there and I showed it to the woman behind the desk she simply said 'Not included'. When I queried this she said 'Is it on the list on the ticket? No.' and turned back to the woman she had been chatting with as I approached. I couldn't be bothered with such rudeness and walked off in a huff! I'm sure it's great once you get inside, but I was tired and pissed off and she put me right off!

This cathedral is essential viewing as there is the famous painting of the beheading of John the Baptist by Caravaggio. The audio guide is excellent and the wealth of the Knights is very evident in the ornate cathedral.

Well worth the 6€! Walked through twice we enjoyed it so much. Though there were several restoration projections going on, it was interesting to see the painstaking work being done behind sheets.

Staggeringly beautiful. The gold-encrusted and painted ceiling, the baldachin over the high altar and the rich carpet around its foot, the richly endowed side chapels of the different langues, the coloured marble tombstones set in the floor, the gorgeous chapel where the icon of the Lady of Philermos was once kept, the Grand Masters' memorials, the pictures….

Don't hurry. Allow plenty of time.

To appreciate it to the full, try to go when it's relatively calm and quiet - perhaps as soon as it opens, while everyone else is still eating breakfast.
