This was our first visit to Malta and, although originally intending to stay in Gozo, we decided, on recommendation from friends, to stay at the Phoenicia and keep Valletta as our base. This proved to be a good decision and the hotel lived up to its billing. From the very moment we walked through the door, we were greeted by warm and friendly staff who went out of their way to help make our time there as enjoyable as possible. I spend a lot of time in hotels with work and this was by far and away the best customer service I have ever experienced. We wanted a quiet and relaxing break and with a lovely harbour view room, surprisingly good food and generally comfortable surroundings, the Phoenicia delivered on all counts. Our only (mild) criticism was with the Pegasus restaurant which is the fine dining option. The service was a lttle over the top and fussy but at least the food was good. However, this would not deter us from dining there again the next time we stay at the Phoenicia, which we will most certainly do.

Room tip: The rooms on the 3rd and 4th floors have the harbour view and are more expensive but worth the premium.

It was some 25 years since we visited Malta. One of the lasting memories from that first trip was tea on the balcony at the Hotel Phoenicia in Valetta and the incredible view of the harbour . Our much overdue return for a week's stay in the hotel left us with only praise for all the friendly staff with a special mention for the staff in the restaurant especially Charlos who had been there for 18 years and the chef at breakfast who produced two perfect fried eggs for me every morning. The evening buffet on Sunday and Thursday was a real treat with some excellent entertainment during the evening.

Room tip: Go for a harbour view on the fourth floor, you couldn't wake up to a better view in Malta

The perfect base for Valetta and close enough for everything else you might want to do. Breakfast was excellent but there were so many restaurants close we did not really use the dining facilities. The bars were quiet and not open late. Pool area good dispite being a distance from the hotel through the gardens.

While beautiful and historic, this hotel could really use an upgrade. Much looks very worn, floors, furniture, bathrooms, etc. We had a nice large room with cute balcony and nice view but we were right outside the maid closets where they congregated often which was extremely disturbing. We often had to maneuver around their carts to get out of our room and on more than one occasion had to ask them to keep the noise down. Staff at front desk were not particularly helpful or friendly and hotel restaurant should be avoided at all costs. The clientele skews much older so consider this when booking. It's not a happening place.

Room tip: Avoid room 106

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to write your comments on Trip Advisor, we are very disappointed to learn that we were unable to fully meet your expectations on this visit.

We upgraded all the ground floor areas and half the bedrooms in 2009 and we are hoping to continue with our upgrading of the rooms on the first and second floors in the coming future.
At the end of this phase all the bedrooms will have been refurbished.

With reference to your comments about the noise outside your room, I would like to apologise for this I have forwarded your comments to our Housekeeper, who has already taken action in order to avoid such situations in the future.

I would like to thank you for taking the time to bring these matters to our attention.

Best Regards

Helena

This is a great base for seeing Valletta and Malta and feels like you have stepped into another grand age. Buses stop outside the hotel so it is really easy to get around the Island for very little, and all of Valletta is walkable within half an hour. The public rooms and pool are beautiful. There is some noise from the building work to restore the city gates and wall, but it is worth putting up with. Staff were all very friendly and helpful. We had sandwiches from the pool bar which were great. We also eat in the Pegasus Brassiere, which we didn't think was very good, but you still can't really go to Malta for the food. On Sunday night the local tango club meet and dance in the Palm Court Lounge. This was fascinating to watch, if slightly bizarre. If you want a central location in a classy hotel, I would not hesitate to recommend the Phoenicia.

Room tip: If you can get a room at the back of the hotel they are much quieter.
