“Certainly a Good Choice”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 30, 2013

We booked a short break of three nights at this hotel, in a deluxe room, to include transfer from the airport and onward travel to another part of the island. Pick up and transfer happened seamlessly in the hotels own vehicle, driven by a very informative and pleasant driver. We arrived at the Phoenicia shortly before noon and the reception staff organised a complementary drink in the bar. The room itself was ready by 12.15 and on being taken to the lift we learned that we’d been upgraded to a suite.
The suite was large, with views ‘inland’ towards the Grand Harbour, over Valletta’s main gate, along the city’s bastion wall and on to a corner of Marsamxett Harbour. The quadruple glazing kept out much of the noise from the busy thoroughfare; however we did notice the hum of air-conditioning in the early hours, though this was only intrusive on the first night.
We tried the Hotels restaurants, both of which are good, but we preferred the Pegasus, particularly ‘for the fish of the day choices’. We also tried the hotels pool bar for lunch, where the only current drawback is renovation taking place on the adjoining bastion. If you are looking for a light bite we’d suggest asking for sandwiches to share.
The pool area and gardens are well tended and ideal to spend a few hours relaxing. The main lounge and bar are a good size and not too busy at night, but there are enough people to generate an atmosphere. We found a cosy corner in the Club Bar for our after dinner drinks, surrounded by photos and mementoes which are unlikely to have been changed since the 1950’s.
Overall we found this to be a good hotel with friendly, attentive and efficient staff. Ideally situated to enjoy Valletta itself and use as a touring base. It is an individual hotel with an old world feel; it therefore has some of the character that branded and modern hotels lack. We will return.

My wife and I are currently stopping at the Phoenicia on a 4 night stay. From the moment we arrived nothing has been too much effort. I must admit the carpets on the 2nd floor landing are looking a little tired but this is more than made up for by the overall atmosphere and friendliness of the staff. The bed is the most comfortable we have ever slept in.

We are only here on bed & breakfast basis but the choice of hot and cold breakfast is very good. After a long day touring around Gozo we decided to eat in at the Pegasus brasserie. It is this experience that has stirred me to write this whilst still guests at the hotel.

The Maitre de is John and he is joined by Celine and Chris. Unfortunately I do not have the chefs name but as a team they have got everything covered. The food was very nice and well presented but the evening was made by the John, Celine and Chris. They were very professional and yet very friendly. We were treated to demonstration on making crepes.

We generally eat out where ever we go but I must say that tonight's meal has been a real treat both in terms of quality of food and overall relaxing atmosphere.

Room Tip: We are staying in room 213 and have a good view over the harbour. The hotel is well placed for walki...

This was our first visit to Malta. We were looking for a city break in the sun and were not disappointed. Chose the Phoenicia for its location only a short walk from Valetta's famous sights but also adjacent to bus stops for services to and from the airport and all over the island.

Booked a deluxe harbour-view room not expecting to have a balcony as well so were well pleased to be allocated a first floor room with view of Marsamxett Harbour, hotel gardens AND balcony. Comfortable bed, free in-room wi-fi, tea/coffee and kettle and very well stocked mini-bar all much appreciated.

On the first night we tried sleeping with the balcony door open and attracted a mosquito. When we appealed to Reception for help the concierge arrived almost immediately with a plug-in killer and that dealt with the critter straight away. We thought that was great service.

The hot and cold buffet breakfast was probably the best we have had anywhere (the orange juice fresh-squeezed, eggs cooked to order, wonderful fresh bread and pastries).. We dined two nights of the four in the Pegasus Brasserie and that too exceeded expectations. Service both at breakfast and dinner was extremely professional; we really could not fault anything.

Room Tip: First and second floor rooms have balconies, third and fourth floors do not. We booked deluxe double...

We recently had the pleasure of returning to the Phoenicia Hotel and what a lovely stay we had! As ever, the service at Reception and Front Desk was second to none: the friendly, attentive greeting that we received made us feel immediately at home and nothing was too much trouble for the delightful staff. Our room was also perfect in every way with amazing views and superb comfort. We certainly felt spoilt and are looking forward already to visiting the Phoenicia again. Thank you all very much!

It has been my first experience in Valletta and in this hotel as well. The right moment I got in I felt an extraordinary sense of confort and relaxing atmosphere. Our room was small, but cosy and clean with all the facilties set out in perfect manner.
Everyday we'd a great breakfast (surrounded by the gentle, never artificial, staff, ready in any occasion to satisfy our needs), served in a dining room that, in some way, still echoes the splendours of the British Empire.
If you chance here, do not forget to pay a visit to the Lounge (just close to the dining room). It still keeps an untouched English colonial style that leads you magically in the past, while you have a coffee or a drink, fancing of all the famous guests who haunted this place (a young Queen Elisabeth, Sir Winston Churchill and many others), whose portraits enrich an incredible gallery.
Just five minutes walk away from the heart of Valletta, from the Central Bus Station and from the Touristic Buses (that could take you everywhere), the Phoenicia Hotel really owns the key to Malta secrets and to your holiday dreams.

We came here to celebrate our 40th (Ruby) wedding anniversary and cannot praise the hotel or staff highly enough for the service we received. As other reviewers have stated, the hotel is ideally placed near the bus station and entrance to Valletta old town, which is a real bonus. We dined in both the Pegasus and Phoenix restaurants but favoured the Phoenix as we preferred the old world ambiance there and the food was always very good. Having said that, the Pegasus offers gourmet food in more modern surroundings albeit at higher cost. The 'John Dory' we had there along with celebratory champagne, the latter a gift from the management, on our anniversary day, was outstanding! We hesitate to single out any member of staff for special praise as everyone we came into contact with was charming, helpful and friendly but Alberto in the Phoenix restaurant was particularly nice and introduced us to some fine local wine - the Ulysses label from Comino was exceptionally good.
The Hotel Phoenicia is strongly recommended and be sure to book a 'Harbour View' room! The extra is well worth paying!

Room Tip: Harbour view.

My wife and I had our fifth stay here, in the week after Easter. The hotel did not disappoint. Staff were friendly as always and many of them have been there since our first visit, and remember us (for the right reasons, I hope!). We were given complimentary tickets for a concert at the Manoel Theatre. Food was good, especially breakfast and the Malta buffet night is not to be missed. However, we would have appreciated a little more variety in the normal dinner menus in the Phoenix restaurant.

Room Tip: Many rooms have a small balcony overlooking the harbour, try for one of these.
