Having eaten many times at 'The Family' in Marsascala, we were interested to hear that not only had the daughters opened their own restaurant, but that it was situated in Strait Street - the infamous 'Gut'. The street is being brought back to civilised life and Valetta itself is now a much more lively place to visit in the evening.
The restaurant is elegant, having been a complete wreck previously, and was mostly filled with Maltese customers which is always a good sign. Service by Francesca was great and the food was an eclectic mix of Maltese, Italian and modern. Rabbit liver, rockfish, langoustine, saltimbocca were just some of the dishes we had. All were excellent.
Don't miss it.

We'd intended going to another well-reviewed eatery tonight, but on the advice of a local landlord, opted for Palazzo Preca instead. I have two pieces of advice: 1) Book and 2) Do not be remotely daunted by the opulent entrance. You can eat as reasonably (or as lavishly) as you choose here. Either way, you will have a memorable night that is fantastic value for money. Portion sizes have defeated us in Malta, but the menu here is so good (and very fish and seafood centric - great news for me, with plenty of meaty offers for Mr Lassie). The wine choice is phenomenal, particularly the local Maltese wines which have impressed me so much. Starters and mains ordered, we were presented with a plate of antipasti, gratis. Lovely olives, dip, butter beans. Starters were good - goats cheese for me, fish soup for the boy (verdict: good flavoured soup, albeit rich with butter). Mains were fabulous. Beautiful soft, aromatic sea bass for me, rib-eye for the boy. His pepper sauce was a huge hit of crushed fresh pepper, the rib-eye pronounced better than anything he could get in the UK, cooked perfectly and at 17 euros, a real steal. I'm only sad I had no pudding compartment tonight. However the free limoncello at the end rounded the meal off beautifully. A stunning setting, lovely food and good service. Remember to book!

I had been to Malta before and was generally unimpressed by the standard of 'everyday' restaurants. Preca, however, was a real find. The quality of the food - especially the fish - was excellent and beautifully presented, in delightful surroundings, by friendly, expert staff. I believe it would have been in a much higher price bracket - and deservedly so - had it been in the UK. We were so pleased with it that we ended up by going there on three of the four nights we were on the island. Top value for money and the fact that many of the patrons were obviously locals spoke for itself.

We arrived without a reservation and squeezed in at around 7pm on the second last table. About eight couples were turned away after the last table was filled, so it's a popular place. Most of the people there seemed to be Maltese and many were obviously regulars. Every part of the meal was of an excellent standard and the waiting staff friendly, helpful and efficient. The actual restaurant room is beautiful and there is a surprising floor! (Go and find out what the surprise is!) The toilets are spotless. It was excellent value for money. Wednesdays are 'dining by candlelight' and are very busy so will always need to book for that.

What a find! We have been going to Valetta on holiday for several years now and eaten in many of the restaurants but there is no question in our minds that Palazzo Preca in Strait Street is by far the best. Very elegant Interior with great atmosphere, excellent service with a smile, beautifully cooked and well presented food from an extensive menu covering simple to the most discerning. Also has a great modestly priced wine list .
