I'd been here once years ago and ended up returning by serendipity. The intention was not to eat; we wanted to find a place to have a bottle of wine in, and though it was late on a weeknight, we were not turned away at Legligin.

Courteous, friendly service, excellent ambience in this little subterranean gem in Valletta. From one bottle of wine it became two, which quickly became a long, incredibly interesting conversation with owner Chris over some completely free dolmathakia he offered us. An astoundingly good (and complimentary) tawny port after and the night was complete.

In brief - brilliant place, will definitely return, and often.

Legligin is located in a small semi-basement town house in Valletta. The atmosphere is quite special. The small rickety tables and chairs, the tight spaces, the subdued lighting, the wine bottles stored in holes in the wall, the odd non-matching pieces of dinnerware all contribute to an interesting atmosphere (assuming you like something of the sort). We've visited on several occasions over the years and this last time we arrived somewhat late in the evening when the restaurant was all full except for our table. The service was a bit slow to start with but then it picked up and the small Maltese tapas plates starting coming in rapid succession eventually. The food is interesting, especially, I think, for foreigners who want to taste some Maltese dishes. From my perspective, however, I would expect some more variety - octopus maybe? or some more exciting meat titbits? rabbit? Prawns in some interesting sauce? Or some breaded meats ('sfineg')? Anyway I'm no chef, just thinking aloud. Bottom line is that the food could be more exciting for me. Maybe we were particularly unlucky on our last visit (a Sunday evening). On the plus side, the owner chef runs the place so at least you can expect a genuine interest in the client.

Ate here twice. An informal but pleasant atmosphere. A series of different small portions, but we were quite full by the end, and had to refuse some. Good food, don't always have all the wines listed. Desserts maybe a little overpriced.

We loved this place - 20euros each bought a seemingly endless selection of Maltese tapas, so we got taste several things which we might not have risked choosing for a main course. Great wine list, friendly service, and quite a local feel. The mismatched furniture and crockery added to the feeling of eating at a friend's home. Dishes included dips, pate, beef olives, pork in white wine, gnocchi and more.

This unique restaurant has a great atmosphere and an excellent wine list. Unfortunately that is all the praise I can give. We decided on the taster menu, but were disappointed after we realized that it only included four extremely small tasters, that was it! We basically overpaid for 4 small (but tasty) bites and for a basket of bread (which ran out quickly as we had to fill up on it, and when we asked for more, the waiter informed us that they had ran out). I would still recommend this quiet restaurant for tourists looking to taste tasty Maltese foods, with the hope that ours was a one off experience.
