Palazzo Valletta Suites
Ranked #8 of 20 Valletta B&B and Inns
Reviewed April 8, 2012

We stayed in the studio on the ground floor for 9 nights in March/April. The 17th-century building is restored with love and care. Our little apartment had high vaulted ceiling, thick stone walls, tiled floors, and interior design with exciting details and hints of the past. Yet it was equipped with all amenities. The location is ideal. The heart of the marvelous city of Valletta is literally behind the corner and yet you feel like having gone back in time and far away from all the tourist bustle.
The arrival arrangements were very smooth, including a free pick up from the airport. Franck, the owner who lives in the same building, provided us upon arrival not only with the keys but lots of helpful local information and tips. This said, he is no busy body. All in all, we did hardly recognize that there were other people living in the building even though the palazzo was fully booked.
The housekeeping was excellent and far above anything we have seen in other self-catering vacation apartments. Our studio was cleaned up and the towels changed daily. The occasional wine bottle or chocolate box waiting on the kitchen table were lovely gestures and made us feel welcome over and over again.
What more could one wish for? Nothing that the owner could have helped. The signs of an exceptionally cold and rainy winter could still be felt also in the studio. The heaters came in handy, but the strong smell of damp prevailed – a phenomenon that often is a fact of life in very old houses during and right after the winter, including our own summer house in Finland :o) We also longed for more daylight since the sun did not reach the windows of the studio and it was still too chilly to have the morning coffee outside on the shady little patio. This said, we would definitely love to go back and will next time make our reservation well beforehand in order to rent the penthouse of Palazzo Citta Valletta.

It was great to be staying SO close to everything we wanted to do - we could easily walk to all the sights in Valetta, walk to the ferry departure point, walk to the bus stop for the hop-on, hop-off sightseeing bus, walk to the bus station for the buses that go all over the island, and walk to the market for fresh produce and groceries. We loved Valletta, and found its history fascinating - and to be staying in such a venerable and typically Maltese building added to the pleasure. The San Gwann apartment was comfortable adn well-maintained daily, the kitchen adequately equipped, and we were pleased to have the use of the wall heaters on the chillier evenings. Franck, the apartment's owner, gave helpful advice on all sorts of things from the quality of the drinking water to the best way to get to Gozo. The complimentary bottle of wine and box of chocolates were very welcome!

We spent a week in this large apartment in the heart of the walled city of Valletta. We were the only guests in this fabulous old but renovated building and we saw the owner only a couple times during our stay. One windy night we were kept awake by a shutter banging incessantly on the building across the street. We left a message for Franck the next morning before we went out for the day and when we returned the problem was fixed. The "San Pawl" apartment was beautifully furnished and decorated as were the common areas of the building. Be aware that this is an ancient structure with walls of traditional Maltese stone and tiled floors. The resulting chill (in December) and odor (sort of musty) is typical of Mediterranean construction. While the website describes the apt as "light-filled", it faces north along a narrow street opposite similar height buildings and does not get any direct sunlight through the three floor-to-ceiling windows. The linens were disappointing - I felt the bath towels were rather small, thin, and far from fluffy. In fact they were not machine-dried and quite stiff and scratchy. I think the housekeeping staff was away the 1st few days because after that we were given a new supply of towels every day. Also, there is no full-length mirror and the large bathroom lacks counter-top space. One thing that turned out to be rather comical was the fact that the wireless computer worked only in the bathroom (the walls are thick remember) and we spent a lot of time in there. But overall we really liked this place for its location and beauty and we would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Street traffic might be an issue if windows are left open.

Thanks for the 5 star rating. Some points need clarifying.
Length of stay was 3 nights 6/9 December, all 4 apartments were booked during these days. All guests are met at the door on arrival by the undersigned and given exhaustive information about Valletta. The house, a palazzo conversion, dates from 1622 and has walls 1.2 / 1.5 meters thick. The apartment faces West and gets afternoon sun when available, certainly not on stormy days or in the thick of winter when the sun is low. It is located dead centre 100 meters from the main square, traffic is restricted to business hours and the whole city is dead quiet from 5 pm onwards. The apartment has central heating and air condition and authentic oriental rugs thrown over the original floor tiles ( painstakingly restored ) and double glazed double doors in the bedroom. Regarding the linen It seems to me there must be some confusion with another establishment on guest's travel itinerary, considering the lapse of time. Housekeeping staff are present daily except Sunday, and I am confused by what is meant by *first few days* since guests only stayed 3 nights. The apartments are serviced regularly and towels changed constantly unlike some other self catering apartments. See other reviews for quality of linen. As to the musty smell in Mediterranean buildings I find this a very condescending comment, to say the least, and does not merit a reply.

I was lucky enough to spend a month in this marvelous palazzo. It has been lovingly & beautifully restored to its former glory whilst having every modern amenity.
My holiday started with a chauffeur driven limo from the airport, all part of the Palazzetto Citta experience !
I stayed in the penthouse for the first part of my holiday & this is truly spectacular. The penthouse itself is cutting edge modern with possibly the best views in all Valletta. A panoramic view of the harbour from the front patio and lovely city views from the rear patio. the penthouse even has a private lift !!!
After this treat, I moved to one of the more traditional apartments in the palazzo. this was quite charming, eccentric in a good way, and opened onto a beautiful courtyard.
Franck , the owner of this fantastic property, was a mine of information - be it where to eat, what villages to visit, or Maltese history - he knew it all !
He could not have been more helpful and added a lot to my holiday.
The general house keeping was exceptional - everything was spotless and even the plants in the courtyard were healthy & shining.
Valletta is a beautiful city -- faded grandeur is how I would sum it up & the Palazzo is very central - easy walking distance from all the major sites, shopping areas and cafes.
I would , without reservation, say that this was one of the best stays I have had in Europe -- unsurpassed.

Room Tip: the two I stayed in were really quite special, so I imagine the rest are as good.

A wonderful place to stay. Franck has an amazing eclectic collection of art and procelain scattered all around the courtyard, stairs and apartment. Perfectly situated and our host was great - even providing extra cooking dishes when asked. I would stay here anytime I was back in Malta. Jennifer cleaned all the time and was always providing new towels. We both loved it!!!

My wife and I stayed in the San Angelo Penthouse Suite during the last week in October, 2011. The owner, Franck, had arranged transport for the short distance from the airport, and was waiting in the hall for our arrival. Access to the Penthouse is via a private lift and Franck gave us a thorough guided tour and something of the history of the house and area. The Penthouse has one en-suite bedroom, a kitchen area with terrace on the street side, a sitting area and the most fabulous terrace area overlooking the harbour. There are sun loungers, chairs, table etc. The décor is ‘minimalist’ which contrasts wonderfully with the elegance of the ancient entrance.
The location could not be better with a variety of small shops and cafes within a short distance. St John’s Cathedral is about two minutes’ walk. Franck was extremely helpful throughout our stay in suggesting things to do and answering our various queries; the perfect host.
Valetta is a small city, so none of the things to do are far away. However, Valetta would be a problem for those with mobility problems because the hills are steep and are often stepped.
The Maltese bus transport system is excellent; the main bus station is about 10 minutes easy walk from the apartments. The smaller island of Gozo is readily accessible by bus and ferry.
There are various schemes for ticket price reductions for attractions, transport and over 60s (proof of age required) - enquire at the tourist office.
Overall, then, we were very satisfied by the accommodation and service. We had an excellent holiday and fully intend to return.

Room Tip: The Penthouse is by far and away the best accommodation, albeit the most expensive.

We chose the San Angelo penthouse for our honeymoon in October. It was a perfect fortnight. On the days where the weather was good (most of them) the terrace overlooking the harbour was a great place to sunbathe in private, on the sun loungers provided. There is another large terrace off the kitchen on the street side of the property, however we did not use this, as the view from the front terrace was so good. You get full sun on the terrace from sunrise to about 3pm in October.

The penthouse is very bright and feels spacious. There are plenty of opening windows which allow a good breeze through the apartment on hot days. The penthouse is well equipped with plenty of crockery, a hob, fridge and satellite tv.

Unlike a lot of self-catering properties, there is a daily maid service. Jennifer would pop in pretty much every day to see if we needed anything, and fresh towels were plentiful. All very efficient, but unobtrusive.

The location of the property is fantastic. It is barely a two minute walk into the heart of Valletta and all the delights the city offers. Although so close to the city centre, the apartment is quiet and you are unaware of the city around you.

The penthouse itself is a modern property built atop a traditional palazzo. It is accessed through the main door and central courtyard, with a lift direct into the penthouse. The palazzo is a wonderful building which you feel part of.

Due to the nature of the palazzo, i.e. being built around a central courtyard, you are occasionally aware of activity within the floor below, however this is minimal, and in our opinion adds to the flavour of residing in a traditional building within the city. The owner of the building, Franck, knowing our interest in architecture, kindly invited us down for a glass of wine and a look around his home (which is beautiful). Due to the double height ceilings of the second floor, this made you realise how far removed the penthouse apartment is from the other apartments, adding to the feeling of peace and seclusion.

Franck is a great host and is on hand to provide you with assistance should you need it (and leaves you alone if you don't!). We were picked up from the airport on time in a chauffeur driven Merc, Franck was waiting at the front door of the Palazzo to greet us when we arrived, he provided advice on where to purchase supplies, and arranged a return car for us to the airport at the end of the holiday. Very efficient and helpful, and we couldn't have asked for more.

Fabulous holiday, fantastic city, great place.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Palazzo Citta Valletta is a 16th century Palazzo located on the “High” side of Valletta, a much sought after location, on one of its principal streets. The house is one of the earliest to be built in the city when two smaller houses dating to around 1580 were joined and remodeled in 1622 in the understated Baroque style so typical of the buildings of that era in Malta. As is typical with most layouts of the time, the building revolves around a large central courtyard or patio. A door and hall large enough to take a coach and horses connects to the street. Cellars housed the stables, the ground floor the kitchens and the first floor the servants’ quarters. On the second floor called the “Piano Nobile” lived the gentry. Various important Maltese families have occupied the house and for a period of years it was also the headquarters of a leading commercial company. The house was locked up for numerous years until a careful and loving restoration was commenced some years ago under the direct supervision of the present owner. The result is a subtle mix of traditional and modern within an imposing structure albeit full of elegance and charm.Just one hundred meters from San Gwann Square the main square of Valletta, the Valletta fruit and vegetable market, food stores and 10 minutes from Malta's main bus terminal. The “Patron”’ of the house has opened the house to a few select guests wishing to relive the splendor of Valletta’s glorious past. A totally new concept in Maltese hospitality not unlike Riyadhs in Morocco, Paradores in Spain and Posadas in Portugal, a unique experience to share in the day to day living within an authentic 16/17th century “Maison de Ville”. Palazzo Valletta offers a high end lodging alternative to hotel accommodation in Malta, at very competitive rates.A total of only four suites ranging from a ground floor junior suite to a de luxe penthouse with panoramic views are grouped around the central patio, the heart of the house. Each suite comes with cotton bed linen, anti allergen pillows and mattress and silk bed covers, pure cotton towels, fluffy cotton bathrobes, cutting edge Italian design kitchen and appliances from a well known brand, Italian bright ceramic bathroom tiles.Daily maid serviced with regular change of towels, pillow cases and sheets. ... more   less
