Description: La Mère is tucked away past the old 'Suq Tal' Belt'. Rustic wooden tables blend with Middle Eastern décor, matching the unique theme of two great cuisines - Indian and Middle Eastern. A small, intimate dining area, and flickering candles, give a warm, homely feel. However, the tables are spaced enough that you do not feel cramped. Servers are attentive and knowledgeable on the wide choice available in the menu. Here, our desire is to present a repertoire of authentic dishes, bursting with flavour, certainly a multi-sensory experience. The menu offers a broad selection of starters, allowing you to whet your palate with a Lebanese spiced lamb sausage, or enjoy mussels and chorizo in coconut milk. Mains are similarly varied, giving you a choice of curries, or perhaps king prawns or lamb chops cooked in the tandoor. Our new menu also presents a selection of main dishes with a fusion twist, such a marinated filet of fish wrapped in banana leaf. There is also a good choice of vegetarian, vegan, lactose and gluten free options. Besides we have introduced a menu degustation, an extensive wine list, cocktails and whiskeys and a broad selection of homemade desserts such as chocolate filled samosas with mango and coconut, assorted baklava, pistachio and ricotta briouats with halva ice-cream.

We went here after reading the glowing Tripadvisor reviews and expected a nice meal. We were sorely mistaken.

Maybe I'm a snob, having lived in India for 6 years and learnt traditional cooking first hand, but the food was overspiced, underspiced and (with the dhal) no spice whatsoever.

Too oily, too much masala and too much oil. Such a disappointment.

The only saving grace? The pappads were authentically cooked on an open flame and the naan was lovely.

Sorry La Mere, I won't be returning anytime soon. Instead I'll be cracking open my own khadhai and cooking the food that is considered authentic to everyday Indian fare.

PS On the plus side, they didn't charge me for the thali!

Thanks for your review. HOWEVER, may we clarify that our Indian Chefs have been born, studied and worked in India, thus their experience in Indian cuisine is quite obviously far more than 6 years.
We are surprised that the food was not up to your expectations, however we believe this is a matter of opinion, the judgement of other reviews seems to proof otherwise.

Went to La Mere recently with a work colleague as everyone as raved about La Mere and how nice it is, the food, variety and service so decided to give it go.

Booked a table, and managed to find the restaurant. Restaurant was busy and looked lovely inside.

Was given the menu and seen some nice different choices. Ordered our food.

Menu does state food takes long, and we sure did have to wait a while.

Starters were okay, same for the main course, very bland.

We asked to pay the bill, the very rude waitress said we have to spend a minimum of €50 to pay on card!! What!! Me and my colleague had 3 courses and a drink and was just under. We had no cash. She kept saying it's the minimum. I told her it will work through the machine. Also says on the window outside. I told her it doesn't say on the website or menu, who looks at a little sign on the window outside??

Then they lied and said they don't accept American Express either!

Would not go again or recommend. Much better choices in Malta. They need to sort out their minimum spend on cards and the service.

If you like Indian food, Arabian, Maltese and Mediterranean, you can find a really interesting concept in this restaurant's menu. Food is genuine. Place is cosy. Service is good. You can take your own wine and you just pay a corkage fee. Location is also good, especially for those entering Valletta with their cars for a lovely dinner. Try it!

I would like to say thank you to all the staff at La Mere. We have just returned from this lovely restaurant and all I could say is that it's EXCELLENT. The staff are friendly and attentive to your needs, the food is superb and you won't have to wait too much even though the restaurant is always full. It's important to book before as the restaurant is always full and you will be surely disappointed. For a delicious three course meal with 4 drinks and 1 bottle of wine...the price was only €57 which is very cheap for the delicious and abundant food. We will surely come again and recommend it to everyone.
