Imperial Hotel
Ranked #23 of 28 Hotels in Sliema
Reviewed June 7, 2014

This well located hotel is in the centre of the Sliema peninsular and the area is convenient to access the surrounding sea front promenades and the many restaurants etc. The Imperial is traditional and full of charm and character. Sadly some of the character is fading a little and some refurbishment is required especially in the bedrooms. We did not sample the reasonably priced evening meals as we found the dining room rather confining. The courtyard garden was a lovely tranquil place to sit and have a coffee or a drink and the pool was a suntrap for sun bathing. The bar often shuts at 10pm and one of the bar attendants can get a little agitato even if you request something as simple as a coffee after that time. The place lacks managerial flair frankly but we did have a fairly good week staying there and appreciated the elegance and charm of the surroundings.

My husband and I stayed here for 9 nights, and felt we got value for money. The entrance was very impressive and the staff were very friendly. We had a room on the 2nd floor and found it basic but very clean with bedding changed regularly and towels every day. The breakfast was disappointing, maybe fresh fruit would have been an helpful addition and I think the bacon is typical of most Mediterranean countries. We just had the continental breakfast which we found adequate. We enjoyed the garden and pool area but were disappointed that the lounge bar was closed in the evening and had to get drinks from the pool bar in plastic cups! The hotel is situated away from the sea front but a 7 or 8 min walk will get you to the main shopping areas with restaurants and bars. However it is quite a pull up the hill on your way back if you are not fit! On the whole we enjoyed our stay here and was definitely value for money.

Room Tip: rooms on the higher floors seemed to be a better choice

The staff are very friendly. The breakfast was OK shame about the awful sausages! The evening meal was good for the price.
Our problem was with hygiene. We noticed that the soil pipe from our bathroom was broken below the window in the maintenance well. Waste was escaping into the well, yuk!! We reported this to a member of staff and it was not fixed while we were there.
We sat at the same table each morning, on the 2nd day our friend spilled juice and it went through the gap between tables onto the floor, it was still there when we left 5 days later. This stuff worries me, it shows a general lack of care about hygiene. If it wasn't for this I would stay there again.

Room Tip: choose a pool/garden room very quiet.

This hotel needs a drastic updating.
A very noisy hotel, with old furniture.
Not very clean and the smell is absolutely disgusting.
Good location, in the middle of Sliema.
Basic breakfast.
Nice garden and nice swimming pool.

Just got back from our holiday staying at the Imperial. Lovely entrance and old colonial atmosphere, staff very friendly. Our accommodation however was very disappointing. The shower room was very shabby with towels having to be laid on the floor to stop water spilling out of the shower tray. The whole shower room smelt of drains. We were in a ground floor corner room facing the road that was very noisy. The breakfast was very basic and not much choice. The bar closed at 10 o clock in the evening and no entertainment at all. There was only a small old tv with one English channel being sky news. This is a shame because it could be a lovely Hotel with lots of History but badly needs some investment. Malta was lovely for the history but a bit like a building site with all the new flats being built.

Room Tip: choose a room overlooking the pool

Don't be put off by the bad reviews you may see. This is a decent 3 star hotel WITH CHARACTER in the middle of a quiet residential area about 10 minutes walk from all the resort's facilities. It has a gorgeous internal garden with a medium sized pool. We again visited the Imperial Hotel in Sliema, Malta for the second time in early April 2014 for a week. If anything it was better than last time (last year at Easter). See my previous review "Imperial by name, Imperial by Nature". We stayed in a room in the right wing of the hotel on the second floor. As before this was a street facing room, and, as before, there was no traffic noise. This was a standard room not a premium one and so was a bit smaller than those but it was very spacious. As some commentators have stated the hotel needs a bit of maintenance in some rooms, but it is all clean and there is daily maids service. i have to say we do not find it noisy. We just love the character of the place. The hotel has changed little. There are 2 changes, both good, worth mentioning - the free wifi worked well this time and I was able to use my tablet and dinner in the evening is now a 3 course buffet which suited us better.
The hotel is the same as before rejoicing in faded glory. It is a 3 star hotel and if you remember this is what it is and not think it is a 5 star you should be pleased. I found the comments from others about noisiness totally unfounded - there were no language students when we stayed. The clientele are of all ages with a few elderly regulars who like the very slow pace in the hotel. Their nationalities are also very varied - French, Korean, British, German, Italian. And this time the hotel was a lot fuller - at breakfast time the dining room was full but you could always get a seat. Again the evening meals were good value - 3 courses for 14.50 euros per person. Wines are also reasonable about 9-15 euros per bottle. The rates for B&B were also excellent.
The only downside was that the TV (which was old admittedly) only gave you news programmes in English - drama /entertainmennt programmes were in Maltese and other European languages. We did not use the room safe. Malta seems a very safe place and we never felt uneasy.
The staff were all very friendly and competent and we had no problems at all. I found it rather touching all the attention toddlers received from the waiting staff.
The bottom line is this is an excellent value for money hotel with a good location, friendly staff and with bags of charm rather than some soul-less efficient 5 star hotel. You pays your money and get what you chose.
Again, I would recommend it. If we return to Malta we will stay there again.

Room Tip: Rooms with pool and garden views are a bit larger. Room 208 apparently is very big. Some of these po...

Dear Sir / madam,

Thank you very much for taking your time to share your experience at the Imperial with other potential clients.

We appreciate the fact that you returned to the Imperial following your first visit last year. Allow me to welcome you to the very large community of repeat customers that the Imperial hotel has. We are currently hosting one of the longest return visitors to the Imperial, who is celebrating his 50th year of repeated custom.
I appreciate that you mentioned that we are hosting a larger number of customers from an increasing number of varied countries and customs. This could pose a bit of pressure on my team as we strive to ensure the best service to all our customers and keeping in mind the customs of various countries. It is not easy but our dedicated team does strive to achieve this aim.
I am aware of the fact that some reviews mentioned ‘students’. However, one must keep in mind that the hotel is open for all paying customer without any discrimination of age, sex, colour or religion. Unfortunately I cannot say the same from a handful of ‘customers’ who wrote differently. ore your comments when we noted that you were actually accommodated in another hotel and thus your comments are more valuable since you were comparing hotels and services offered.

We do look forward to welcome you back in the near future.

With kind regards,

Joe Attard
General Manager

A beautiful hotel with character and charm - but is let down by the accomodation which needs drastic updating. The bedroom was very basic - monastical even - no lock on the safe, and as for the bathroom, I would only shower as the bath was so rusty, and the toilet needed bleaching. The dividing walls ( not to mention the dividing door ! ) very thin and you can hear everything going on next door.
A positive note - you won't need an alarm clock as the cleaners start in the corridors very early, and are prone to loud voices and trolleys.
I only had breakfast there once. The selection was absymal, and so overcrowded there was nowhere to sit, and when there was a seat available everything so cluttered because the waitresses couldn't cope.
It's a huge shame as the hotel itself is lovely and I would LOVE to stay there again, but won't as I need to sleep when on holiday.

Room Tip: Avoid the ground floor opposite the lift.
