“hotel excellent but spoiled by students”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

I have spent a week at the Plaza Hotel in Sliema. The blue see just across the road, local bus stop right outside, which you can go anywhere on the island. The hotel rooms are basic but very clean and comfortable. There is roof top pool and bar with evening entertainment. Dining room overlooking the sea. Food is fine, choice of four hot meals, salad but repeatable at breakfast. Staff is very friendly and helpful.
Sorry to say that everything the hotel had going for it was spoiled by groups of out of control young students staying there with a company called Education First, who had no respect for anyone else with their door slamming, the screaming of the girls, shouting from the balcony, room parties and their animal behaviour at meal times. Their tutors seems to do nothing about it. This happened each morning before eight and at night until past midnight. So check first before you travel if Education First is staying at the hotel and stay well clear of it.

just back from our first time in malta. malta is a beautiful place hotel in good location but little did we know what sort hotel goin into. got there early hours of the morning shown to our room in the regency side of the hotel. the room was so tiny horrible smell as soon as opened the door, bare walls not very clean damp bed. we went and complained to be told coudnt move us till the morning,we lay 2 beach towels on edge of bed and tried to sleep which we didn't, first thing in the morning we went to change rooms into the plaza side which was much better but come at a price we had to pay 72 euros. then we found we had to share the hotel with loads of EF students with bad manners running around at night and first at meal times nearly knocking you over on the stairs spoilt our holiday. no one told us about the students bein there else wouldn't have gone there. will go to malta again but not this hotel .

Room Tip: ask for sea view in the plaza

Just returned from a one week stay here and like many people I had read previous reviews and was dismayed to be told I was in te Regancy half of the hotel on check in and of course there were no alterantives available....But I was pleasantly surprised, the reception was nice and quite, the staff very pleasant. The room I was allocated was very clean and for one person quite roomy, for two people it would have been a squeeze. The deco was 1980's MFI as I was in an older room not yet upgraded but all in good condition, all worked ok, no bulbs missing etc. and the bathroom though small was clean. The room was cleaned every day and no where in the hotel did I find it dirty. There were language students staying in the hotel but other than seeing them at meal times I hardly came across them and I was never disturbed at night by any noise from other guests. It was noisy early in the morning when the dustcarts come round but everywere in Malta they start before dawn and if your hotel is on a road you will hear the traffic noise.

The resturant up on the 6th floor and did get quite noisy and busy at times but the chef coped quite well, food was replenished frequently so did not sit around in the serving trays. Each night 4 choices of mains and a selection of salads and as Malta 3 star hotels go this was the best food I have sampled and I have visited Malta over 20 times now. The staff in the restuarant and roof top bar were all pleasant. The manager was also very helpful when a flood from the public toilet affected my bathroom. There was a response within 10mins and my bathroom was fully cleaned within 30mins.

Overall I can say I was pleasantly surprised how nice I found this hotel to be and so yes I would gladly go back to this hotel.

Room Tip: Regancy side...Rooms ending 29 ie 129, 229 etc have no balcony but have a sea view out of the side...

Just returned home after a 10 night stay in Malta, and can only agree with the other reviews left for this hotel sorry youth centre.
We were in room 105 in the Plaza side this is one of the refurbished rooms so in that respect we had no complaints, we were on a half board package so were used the restaurant twice a day Breakfast was OK' It right about toast machine just take another option that's if you can get near to it for kids. The evening meal well that's another story if there was anything left after the vultures had been in after a few days you realise if you eat late then its what's left only the staff try there best but are fighting a loosing in battle due to the amount of students As mentioned in another comment the lack of manners of some of these students is beyond belief our dog at home has more sense. At meal time's the hotel lifts are a play area so you might get one up to the restaurant on the 6 floor if your patient. On a night you might want to consider ear plugs as the noise of doors slamming and people running through coridoors screaming at one another goes on from 11 to 12.30 ish. All of this is a shame as the hotel dose have potential, a great location, good facilities, but could be run a lot better. Malta itself is beautiful, nice people, plenty to do, and see the beech area is mainly exposed rooks but you can still find places to sit. Valletta is a must you can go into Selima and get the local ferry for two euro eighty return I would not heitste to go back to Malta but would try another hotel. We booked with Chevron holidays a good price but they DID not mention that this hotel was in the EF ( Education First ) scheme so If I were you check with your tour operator when booking.

Just come back from 2 weeks at hotel with family having booked three rooms. Pot luck on which side you end up and we ended up on the side which has not been renovated (might want to charge different prices and give choice, right hand side is not even 3 star). Spoke to reception but said hotel was full but offered to upgrade to the other side (for a supplement of course). Having unpacked and as rooms were on same floor we decided to stay put. Rooms very basic and carpets in rooms (carpets in a hot country?) are at least 15 years old looking by the state of them. Bedding and towels are old and tatty. Malta now had digital tv but someone forget to tell the management here to upgrade the aeriel.

Found all the staff helpful and smiling (especially reception staff). Food was pretty awful and very basic, breakfast does have all the normal but cold cuts don't change, fruit is limited and despite the management saying toaster has been fixed it is positioned poorly and with the numbers going to breakfast is inadequate for purpose. Considering the choice of fruit and veg available in any number of small stalls selling all over the island you would think a hotel could have more available. Someone might want to tell them that dogfish/shark is still the same even if you use the maltese name for it.

Worst aspect of hotel is the fact that it is now taken over by Education First (EF) students from europe learning english. There seemed to be a large number from latvia and luthiuinia who need to learn manners before english, coughing over the food, running riot, trying to get in lifts before you get out etc. This will be an ongoing problem.

If you can put up with all this it is a great location. Weigh up the price against the negatives and you may get a good holiday.

Room Tip: look at one of the other hotels, several smaller ones close by that look smart and clean and will be...

Pros:

Fantastic location
Cost
Great to have a roof top pool and sun bathing area
Overall staff do try to help
Breakfast was basic but good
Management do try and are approachable except the lady that does reservations as everything she does is just lip service
Great option if you are not planning to spend a lot of time in your room

Cons:

Dated and in need of refurbishment not just half the regency side but the plaza side too
Rooms ok but could do with a deep clean of tiles, curtains cleaned etc
Hotel should replace stained and possibly not the cleanest bed spreads with light weight duvet style bedding that have removable covers and can be laundered between guests changeover
Air conditioning in our room worked but sounded like a jet engine at all times but did block out the consistent noise of the students that had taken over half the hotel from language school on a summer course (not there permanently)

Having recently returned from a weeks stay at the Regency & Plaza I was a little unsure how to review it. Overall we enjoyed our stay and time in Malta and at the hotel where we also took my parents. Having read reviews I understood it was a mixed bag but the cost made it the right option along with location. We booked via alpha rooms and paid a mid range price for two larger inland view rooms with double beds that were quiet. I also emailed the hotel to ask that we be given refurbished rooms and not the ones in need of refurbishment. We received a reply from the reservations lady saying it was noted but no promises. Upon arrival we were given two twin rooms, with sea view in need of refurbishment. They were not the worst but definitely not of the standard expected, the sheets didn't even make it to the end of the mattress on the beds and you had your feet on the mattress. The bed spreads are stained and not the best. Really the rooms would be fine in the meantime with a spruce up lick of paint and fresh bedding. The reservations lady had not even tried to put one of the couples in a refurbished room so it felt like her making a note was more lip service than a genuine attempt to help.

We were told that they could not move us that night but to speak to them in the morning which we did. To give credit they offered us double rooms to look at on the plaza side. We took them only to find out later that double is twin beds pushed together not double beds, we could not open the draws in our wardrobe without taking the doors off, the air conditioner was the loudest I've ever heard in a room. The room my parents got had a shower that leaked and flooded the floor every time they turned it on and they were surrounded by students staying at the hotel were not considerate at any time in regards to their noise and other guests. The hotel did try to repair the shower in room 304 but its a big job so in the end the GM spoke to us, was honest that it could not be repaired easily without moving my parents to another room. By this time they only had 2 nights left to stay and could not be bothered moving again so settled for extra bathmats and a round of complimentary drinks given to us all.

I really think the GM and team are trying and by next summer I'm sure the upgrades will be noticeable. In the meantime if your looking for cheap, cheerful, location, pool and on the shore front then its a good option if you are not planing to spend a lot of time in your room and are not super fussy. You get what you pay for and this is not a 4 start hotel its a 3 star hotel with a 5 star location at a 3 star price. We would return especially once the Regency refurb has been completed.

Room Tip: If you want nicer rooms pay the extra for superior rooms on the regency side
