Let me say right at the start I wanted a disabled accessible guest room with the least 32 inches of clear door openings, bathroom doors with roll-on shower, level or ramp entrance into public areas/facilities accessible for the physically challenged, rooms accessible to wheelchairs (no steps)
After over a week of research and searching avoiding hills and steps,

"I am pleased to confirm the booking", for one room adapted with people with disability and another room adjacent or very close for my carers, double bed for two people, That was on Monday 14 October 2013.

On checking in we were informed it my room 436 was not one bit disabled friendly, no roll-in shower, no grab rails, no low wash basin and carers instead of adjacent or very close, but was four floors away it 836.
How could the get it so wrong after all I only booked it seven (7) months prior.
straight away we went down to reception to check first, they said it the wrong way round, we checked and both were exactly the same, by then it was getting late so decided to discuss the following day. While on the subject of lifts, it seamed like which one is going to breakdown next, most days for some of the time one would be out of action.

On to The Taste Restaurant you pass the bar then go outside down the ramp, go round the pool go up the ramp go inside up the hump to get seated. Breakfast offered something of everybody the usual mix of tea coffee, juice, cereals, omelettes of a full English or anything in between.

So to reception for round two or it felt like it, we were told there was no free rooms till Friday so half a hour later still no better off all they say was sorry. But to compensate in some small way they were offered two evening meals for 2 nights. We eventually got right room that ordered the first time namely 837 next door to 836 is I ordered for my carers.
We were seriously misled when booking this hotel. It is neither 5 star nor a "Resort". Not by a long chalk. "5 star" implies a level of luxury. "Resort" implies a self contained complex with all the amenities and facilities that holidaymakers could need, no shop, one small communal area, one bar open, and it appeared it all the restaurants all franchised out one way or another.

One night we went to Can Thai caters for Chinese and Thai dishes they choose from the Chinese menu on arrival of the meal the waiter explained that the cook only knew how to cook Thai style not Chinese, but before that another ramp to cope with once inside another problem 4 cm's step a man that to manually lift the wheelchair up the step and be seated attracting some undue attention.

I've saved best or should it be worst till last just getting in was a feat my its self, Il Giordano had No ramp in sight and a 8cm's step, Reinforcements arrived two burly men had to physically lift me up the step again attracting more attention. Looking it the menu it didn't resemble any way, shape or form the menu in reception the same day vastly decreased menu no garlic bread with tomatoes and basil, bruschetta and dishes of olives and when a asked about garlic bread the chef said NO he's to busy and that was that, what happened to the customer is always right, the meal ok it could of been so much nicer, in the end a disappointing meal. I have I feeling something better change and fast and woe betide if you forget your confirmation slip.
Before I finish I would like to thank Christian on reception for doing his best to sort the mess out about the wrong rooms in the first place, also to Xavier and Lisa in Taste Restaurant for there kind service.
I could excuse one or two little hiccups ever all it is open all year round, and the another month we when like dining outside and half they troubles wont apply.

My wife and I spent a very enjoyable week in the Fortina Spa.

It was our second visit, the first was in the adjoining Four star.

We booked half board with a choice of restaurants. It is advisable to book your restaurant well in advance, as they can be booked out very quickly.

There is good WiFi on each floor of the Spa accommodation, which covers the bedrooms.

We will definitely stay there again

Stayed here for 4 nights following a conference at another hotel in Malta. We needed somewhere to relax and chill out and this place did not disappoint. Our room was fantastic. Lovely and clean and very well equipped. We had chosen a spa bedroom and made great use of the facilities. The serums and bath products were replenished twice a day if they had been used. Staff were friendly and helpful. Big comfortable beds. Nice large balcony. Only negative was that we had asked for larger bath robes and never received them.We had been promising ourselves to come here since 2001 when a friend recommended it! We will certianly be back. We had a lovely garden view which made it very quiet compared to a sea view room which people have said can be noisy from the traffic unless you have a room on a higher floor. We tried two of the restaurants, The Taste and Can Thai and found the food to be of good quality and we really enjoyed it. Staff were attentive and friendly. The hotel was well placed for shops and reataurants. We were given a free session in the thalassotherapy pool which was interesting and we were also given a free harbour cruise so were able to see some of Malta's history. Looking forward to a return visit.

Room Tip: Choose a garden view if you want peace and quiet or a room on a higher floor.

This is a fantastic spa hotel with a brilliant choice of restaurants. The spa rooms are great and the one's with their own pool even better. The cocktails are to die for and there is always plenty to eat and drink on the 5 star all inclusive package. The hotel is big as it has a choice of 4 star and 5 star. A map of the hotel would be very helpful to ensure you don't miss any aspect of this great hotel. i have been there with girlie friends about 6 times now!

Room Tip: if you can afford it always go for a spa bedroom. If not the tower rooms are great. Some of the room...

My boyfriend & myself decided to try the Spa at the Fortina Spa resort as we needed some pool therapy. The first thing that is not welcoming at all, is the long distance you have to walk to finally get to a reception where there are staff. We arrived there at 3pm and we were still charged €11/person ( a normal rate) even though the Spa closes at 6:30pm. When we were given the keys for our lockers, the first that staff advised us is that the women's changing room was 'messy'. at that expression I thought it was because cleaners were still not there to clean, which still at a 5star hotel this should not happen. Once I entered the changing room, I was shocked! everything out of order and you can only use the changing room to put things in the lockers. Water on the floor, mould on the soffit and much more. Taking a shower for a woman meant getting all things out of the locker and walking to other rooms that were designated as 'shower & changing room' which were usually used as therapy rooms. they were in a terrible state everything rusting! The last but not least was the pool... although it is quite large, there is no such relaxed music while using the facility which made it a bit boring. no adequate tables/chairs were to put towels etc. Our experience there only lasted for an hour as we were quite angry. upon handing back the locker key to the staff, we were not asked if our experience was ok, and this left us with nit being able to complain there and then.

I would suggest to think twice before going there, as it is really not a Spa for a 5 star hotel.

This hotel was adequate but we started out on the wrong foot. A cab that we had arranged with the hotel to meet us at the airport was not the best intro to the property. Yes, he was prompt and awaited us with the Fortina Spa sign. No problem finding each other since the airport is very small. We two senior adults walked out with our hand luggage, happy to turn it over to the driver. That was not the case! The young man walked in front of us for several minutes and never inquired as to whether we would like help with the suitcases until it was time to put them into the trunk. Strange!
Next step was arrival when we entered a dimly lit lobby to hear a phone ringing non stop and see the one and only desk clerk checking in someone he knew (cash only). We were ignored as were the couple who came in after us until checkin #1 was finally on his way. The phone rang nonstop throughout. I wondered about the person on the other end and the frustration level. Five star hotels don't usually treat their guests so abysmally.

The rest of our stay was pretty average with the exception of breakfasts (which we paid extra for but which were well worth it). Breakfast was delicious and we discovered that Malta has outstanding bread. Exceptional. They will also make fresh omelettes to order and crepes which were delectable.

The evening meals were expensive and average. We were al a carte and, e.g. a small (tiny!) bowl of corn soup in the Thai restaurant was 8 Euros. Not worth it! The meal plan was very pricey and definitely only for a captive audience.

The hotel room had certain deficiencies which were just plain annoying. Our custom is to leave a bathroom light on in an unfamiliar location so we can have a slight bit of light; This was totally impossible with a glass door facing the bed from the lav so we fumbled around in the dark. Unpleasant. Also the situating of the one available plug to charge our electronics was not near the bed. Poor planning indeed! Personally I can't stand throw pillow on the bed and this bed was loaded with them plus a decorative blanket as well. These are not cleaned reliably and I don't want them on my clean bed. Annoying.

They are sparing with soap. One tiny bar allotment. Laundry bags: 1 when you arrive and you have to request more. We were there for five nights. Why can't management think like hosts?

The hotel was basically clean but the finishing touches were sloppy. Paint on woodwork etc. Far from perfection.

The elevator was arthritic. More aches and groans than a 90 year old!

The location was fine.

All in all plenty of warts but not intolerable enough to demote to three stars.

Quite a change with Freddy and team having left to be replaced by PJ and others. However, a long requested 'owners' newsletter appears to be in the pipeline. Oh, for some basic UK TV channels.

Il Giardino has just been franchised. So, need to wait and see how it turns out. Disappointingly, the snackier items such as bruschetta and garlic bread are no longer on the menu meaning there is nowhere now for a light lunch. In all restaurants there are now many items that attract a surcharge even when going 'all inclusive'. And, excepting Taste, all restaurants now require bookings for lunch. We missed the old laisez faire of turning up according to what took our fancy and at whatever time we got back from any excursions etc. With this freedom lost, we're now thinking half-board for future visits.

The hotel arranged taxi service gets worse (was that possible?). Darren is regularly late and then drives like a ******* maniac, one handed whilst texting or reading his pick up notes, swapping in and out of lanes every few yards. This time he failed to pick us up at the airport as prearranged and prepaid. One of our suitcases was a few minutes late onto the carousel and by the time we had collected it, he'd left. After a half hour wait to find out what was happening, we had to make our own way to the hotel; fortunately very easy with the excellent taxi service available at the airport. Darren's attitude was that it was our fault being late and he wouldn't refund the money. It took quite an angry PJ to sort this out. (Refreshingly for us) he didn't speak once when returning us at the end of the holiday. He just drove worse than ever. Time for the hotel to get in a new taxi company / driver and put Darren on a proverbial bike. He is doing the Spa and its customers no favours. Had this been in England, I would have complained to the licencing authority.

For those who visit Ali's shop. We bought 2 of his very colourful Turkish lamps last Christmas. He shipped them to us and all arrived in perfect condition. We were able to tell him that the same lamps had been on a specialist stand at the Ideal Home Show which we visited at the end of March.
