“How a 5star should be!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 21, 2012

I have just spent 2 nights at this great hotel. Weather was fine so we could enjoy the private pool we had with our room. Food was simply amazing. We paid for the All inclusive so we could try all the 5 restaurants of worldwide cousine - japanese, indian, mediterranean and chinese. A must to go if looking for a 5 star hotel close to all amenities, even though you won't be needing to go out of the hotel.

Room Tip: The Spa rooms are out of this world

I had a short stay in this hotel with my girlfriend. I was upgraded to a spa room and it is incredible.... very spacious room, comfortable and with all amenities in the room. The Jacuzzi behind the bed was fabulous. It was a very relaxing experience.

Our first stay in Malta and won't be our last. Arrived to be told upgraded to 5star for one night and when asked why told its because its my birthday. Great start to the holiday and just got better as the week progressed. Ask for a sea view we were on the 7th floor and although we didn't have a balcony, the stunning view which will always remain in the memory more than made up for it.. The food we felt was better in the hotel than the restaurants you could choose from. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Very safe area to walk around and very much a shoppers paradise. The only downside be aware of the irritant who sits outside the hotel restaurant entrance when you arrive. He is only there for one reason to sell you time share!! Then again if you want to waste half a day of your holiday that is your choice.....

We have just arrived back from our annual 2-week late-summer holiday at the Fortina Spa Resort - this was our 7th stay there - and it might well be our last. As other reviewers have said they appear to have taken their eye off the ball and standards have slipped badly. It is still a very nice hotel but 5-star?
5-star suggests the very best but the Fortina Spa is not delivering the best. When we arrived there were no porters to take luggage to rooms - not a one-off occurrance as other guests mentioned the same thing to us later in our stay. The TV in the room - unbelievably still an old 15" CRT model - didn't work as there were no batteries in the remote control! When these were eventually replaced the choice of channels was even less than last year - a 5-star hotel with a choice of half-a-dozen channels? What has happened to the in-house movies? What has happened to the pay-per-view movies? Both of these used to be available and are surely a must for any hotel calling itself 5-star? I know that you don't go on holiday just to watch TV but on days of poor weather or in the evenings before bed you need something to do - especially now as the amount of evening entertainment provided seems to have been cut back as well. They have a large "conference room" behind the reception with a huge back-projection TV system which is simply never used - why not? During the time of our stay there were various major sporting events taking place - Ryder Cup Golf, European Football etc - but if you wanted to watch them you were directed to the bar in the next-door 4-star hotel. What sort of 5-star hotel does that?

The quality of the food in the restaurants was generally as good as ever, although there seems to have been cutbacks in La Vallette on the choices available at both breakfast and at dinner - i.e. much smaller selection of cold meats, cheeses, fruit etc. however, the big difference seems to be in the level of service. Many of the waiting and serving staff who we have come to know over the years seem to have gone and been replaced by people who are not up to the job. A fellow guest slipped and fell on a food spillage in La Vallette but when I pointed out similar large spillages on the floor to staff nothing was done about it - they were simply left there - presumably for someone else to have an accident! We also found tables that were incompletely laid - i.e. cutlery/crockery missing, and a complete lack of understanding as to when to clear away used crockery i.e. one evening our half-full bottle of wine, glasses and plates were cleared away when we had simply gone up to the buffet to get a sweet!

The standard of food in the other retaurants in the garden was excellent - as usual - although, once again, the service standards left a lot to be desired. No-one wants to rush their meals but the delay between courses in both the Indian and Chinese was, at times, quite ridiculous although none of the restaurants seemed particularly busy. Complaints about this once again suggested that it was due to changes in staff.

All-in-all then, a case of " could do better". The irritants might only be minor ones but, together, they add up to something more substantial. Fortina Spa Resort cannot keep using the stunning views across the harbour as a reason to call themselves 5-star - it takes more than that. They need to up their game and concentrate on quality.

Room Tip: To get the best view and all-day sunshine on your balcony chose a room number ending in 31 32 or 33

Dear caramellog,

Thank you for your posting. We are disappointed to learn that your stay with us was unsatisfactory. Please be assured that your comments have been well-noted and passed onto all Management.

Kindly be advised that the La Vallette Restaurant does not form part of the Fortina Spa Resort but belongs to the four star Hotel Fortina and therefore, it is not of five star service like the other Restaurants located within the Fortina Spa Resort.

Kind regards,

My wife and I purchased a one week stay at the 5 star Hotel Fortina Spa three years ago when it really was a five star hotel. We have been coming each year on a regular basis and have seen how it has plummeted to it's present level of barely four star. We now have no evening entertainment, the food in the restuarant we are entitled to use is at best bland, the cleaners wash floors whilst the guests are trying to move freely, and from what we have gleaned from other guests all, but all of the toilet seats in both the 5 star tower have become chipped.......a severe health risk in it'self. Then of course we have the now famous Fortina lifts!!!!!! I don't think a day went bye but we had one out of commission. As a disabled person this did not go down too well with myself. It was left to me to ask if I could use a different restaurant without incurring extra cost. The staff are very nice and polite.

Room Tip: Imperative to have a sea view.

4th Time i have been to this Hotel and it never fails to disappoint. Ideal for anyone looking to just relax in a luxurious hotel (which has recently had some of it's rooms redone). The area is safe and all local shops/restaurants are within a 5-10min walk. There is also the new shopping mall with a great food hall 5 min round the corner.

Depending on who you book with, there seems to be the offer of free spa workouts, these are really good and also shows you areas of the hotel you may not come across (as well as the indoor pool that i never knew existed till my 4th visit!). I wouldn't really recommend for a family holiday to entertain the kids, as it seems to appeal more to couples, however it is a child friendly atmosphere (just not loads to do for kids).

Room Tip: Both garden and sea views are lovely, but sea view you have more action going on, as well as the sun...

Upgraded from 4 star to 5 star we were rather disappointed. Requested harbour view and our main view was over Tigne apartments. Not a lot of sun on balcony.

Beware of shutting door behind you when going onto balcony as the door locks. We were stranded for half an hour!

We were also approached by someone who wanted to come and view our room although reception staff didn't know anything about it.

Not the sort of thing you would expect of a 5 star hotel.

Room Tip: If in the Tower make sure you get a good view and some sun on the balcony if you enjoy the hot clima...
