Fortina Spa Resort
Ranked #10 of 28 Hotels in Sliema
Reviewed November 3, 2011

Firstly, there are two hotels at the site bearing the Fortina name, the Fortina Hotel (4 star) and the Fortina Spa Resort (5 star), we heard locals such as taxi drivers refering to them as the Fortina, and the Fortina five star respectively. The hotels are conjoined and each is accessible internally from the other which allows for sharing of resources.

The Fortina Spa Hotel comprises a tower block built on to the east end of the Fortina Hotel and also a wing running off NW which makes up the rear wall of the joint internal pool/garden area.

There is an absolutely fantastic panoramic view of Valletta to the south across the Sliema Creek, we are not exaggerating here, it is truly stunning. This view was the main reason we picked the Fortina Spa.

Unfortunately a large multi storey residential complex has recently been built in front of the hotel which considerably restricts the view of many of the seaview rooms.

All of the seaview rooms on floors above 6 should have reasonable views, below this, only rooms 1-3 have the fantastic Valletta view, rooms 4 onwards have more and more of the tower blocks opposite. We saw rooms 236 (floor2 room 6), 636 and 632, the first two had direct views of the residential blocks only, very annoying when you have paid extra for a seaview.

There is a second problem for those staying on floor 2 (there are no floor 1 rooms), a walkway has been built from the closeby Tigne Point Mall across the front of the hotel, this walkway is the same height as the balconys of the floor 2 rooms. The balcony and the room interiors are easily visible to busy pedestrian traffic a short distance away.

The Fortina Spa Resort seaview rooms we stayed in were large and well furnished with a bed of at least superking size. Towels were changed daily and robes and slippers were provided. The aircon is directly controlable with three settings and the TV is a CRT with the usual hotel satellite fare. The windows are double glazed and are effective at keeping the noise from the road below out.The safe was small and used a programmable PIN for access.

There are several pools, one in the garden area which gets little sun and two in a lido area across the road from the hotel, this can be reached via a private tunnel from the hotel. My wife is a serious exercise swimmer and she found the indoor pool in the basement spa complex to be the most suitable for this activity.

My wife also tried several of the spa treatments provided in the huge basement spa area of the Spa Resort hotel and was very pleased with them although she considered them a little pricey.

We had excellent service during our stay with room defects being repaired very quickly. The main problem we had was being offered two rooms with no view when we had paid extra for a seaview room, we had to stay in one of these for two days as the hotel was full. Once we had the stunning view everything was fine except for being billed for minibar items we did not use.

We only ate breakfast at the hotel as there are a huge number of cafes and restuarants just outside. The comprehensive buffet breakfasts were served in the Taste restuarant in the garden pool area. Taste in food is very personal, but we really enjoyed the offerings there, if you are a fan of the full English, you won't be disappointed.

The hotel has no guest parking, but the Tigne Mall carpark is just next door and is 24hr with reasonable rates.

Room Tip: On floors 2-6 only seaview rooms 1-3 actually have a seaview and some seaview rooms on floor 2 are o...

First of all, the three star part of the hotel is very shabby indeed and the five star part of the hotel is four star at best!. The reception staff are ignorant and disinterested. The breakfasts are reasonably good and so are the evening meals., but we had to wait a long time to be served.
The spa treatments are way overpriced and it is hard to get a lounger by the pool. The best part of the hotel is the internal garden, especially when it is all lit up at night. The worst part of this hotel, is the time share sharks on the 12th floor and since returning home, we have read so many articles of people being scammed by them.
We like Sliema and the view of Valletta is very pretty, but here are far better hotels in Malta than Fortina and my advice is to avoid this one!!

Room Tip: If you do go there, get a room in the five star part of the hotel

I love staying here - it's a little bit of ultimate pampering that you just can't beat. It is really worth spending the extra on a spa room with private pool if you go during the summer months. I have had this room travelling as a single and as a romantic getaway with a partner. The room is the absolute BEST for pampering with no less than a jacuzzi, massage bath, steam room, dermalife (makes you feel great if you use it every day of your holiday) and then a great upstair area with high density salt pool with massage jet and enough room for four people to have a comfortable day either in sun or shade (there's also a shower, blinds for your privacy, a sink and a fridge up there). Where to start with the food - be prepared if you go all inclusive to come home with more than a few pounds extra - delicious, delicious, delicious - Taste restaurant and the Tapanyaki would be my favourite. In my opnion nowhere in Malta compares! PS - I forgot, make sure you take full advatage of the swim up bar and great cocktails they serve!

Room Tip: If you book a spa room with pool, ask for one furthest away from the 'tower' - ultimate sun...

Stayed at this hotel from 7th to 14th October. on arrival we were second to book in and was treated to a lovely glass of cold champagne while we waited. Receptionist was very polite and efficient we were allocated our room with a garden view. Room was a good size very clean. Having seen the views of Valetta we asked for an upgrade and this was accomodated for a small fee but well worth it for the view. Breakfast selection and quality was outstanding. Ate in most of restaurants on site all were excellent quality and value for money. Spa sante absolutely fab!! overall a fantastic week and will definately be going back.

We have just returned from a week in Malta - what a wonderful time we had, great venue for popping anywhere in Malta, view from the hotel overlooking Valetta Harbour was just fantastic both during the day and at night. We had a beautiful sea view room 6th floor. Pool is salt water and there is a good reason for this as the sea is prone to splashing over the side of the harbour, again such a fantastic thing to see. (personally I hate chlorine) Pool is great when you are hot and needing a cool down - I loved it. Food in the choice of restaurants was also a very pleasant experience, food exceptional, and not being tied to eating in the one place. No full board available however this is returning for those who like to drink etc...... I cannot commend the staff enough they were always polite and helpful, I had a very light breakfast but my partner loved the full breakfast, no complaint there. Yes the majority of visitors this time of year were elderly but they had a great time - music not my age range but what the hell we danced! Night lift not too far away if you want clubbing. I think you pay for what you get in this hotel, if you opt for the cheaper choice you may get a small room and limited view - my advice ask for sea front (this time of year as garden view gets no sun) and on the 6th or 7th floor where the rooms are all newly fitted and a decent size - but if you are only worried about the size of your room - book a villa! Malta is a great place and we will certainly return to stay in this hotel. If you have reason to complain - the staff I'm sure will do their best to help. As far as we could see they were understaffed and all worked very hard when rushed off their feet. We are now back in a very cold Scotland and would happily return to Malta today! (any size room)

Room Tip: 6th or 7th floor - sea view. not need for 5star.

The Fortina was a very nice hotel the service and food great,
beaware if your sun bathing and want to cool off in the pool its very cold ( freezing )
plenty of sun beds so no worries there
We went 4 star but found the rooms a little basic but large, the bath room however are small.
after 2 days we upgraded to 5 star you can tell the differance, you do pay the extra but worth it so if you go, go 5 star nice views on to harbor or the gardens where you find the resaurants. free use of computer in lobby with internet. but there is only one but free WiFi if you have your own.
A new bus service is running there with modern air con buses 2.60Euro gets you an all day ticket to go any where on any bus.
Still needs a bit of work to bring it back to life in places
If you hire a car like us take it easy the locals are crazy, Iv seen them go through red lights over crossings with people on, dont stop at stop signs. you can pass on either side. and you follow road signs then they just vanish and you dont find any more. the only thing is its great for getting round the islands.

Room Tip: Harbor view better than garden as you get more sun

I stayed in this hotel for a weekend break and even if the Spa rooms might be top rated rooms, the other rooms are very normal, hardly a 5 star level. As soon as we entered the reception the lady at the front desk sent us to the 4 star Fortina next door may be assuming we were not up to the 5 star? She was fairly rude and as soon as I tried asking her something she would immediately give me a pre-studied answer which in my case was never the answer to the question which I had in mind of asking if she ever had let me finish. At one point she had a phone call regarding someone from outside the hotel wanting to book a restuarant, she just passed the call to the restuarant without even bothering to inform the caller!!

The room was nice and clean and of good size. May be the furniture was a little ols but everything else was brilliant. Apart from the TV. When we switched it on, we were able to hear the sound but we couldn't see any picture. It was an old type of TV so we assumed it was faulty but then again you would expect a 5 star to have a flat screen rather than a small tube type of TV. The hotel is very quiet and very pleasant to stay in, very good for relaxing.

The Spa was magical and their facilities one of the best on the Island. You can find any kind of massage or other therapy and they are executed as you would expect them to. The rest of the Spa facilities were also very nice, a variety of things to do such as sauna, Turkish baths, foot bath, meditiation room etc. and all rooms were of very good size, including the jacuzi which could hold a good number of people at one go. There was no indoor pool at the spa, since there is one at the gym only down the corridor.

The food at their restuarants are very good and the waiters very nice and helpful. Breakfast was also very good but may be the restuarant chosen to serve the breakfast was a little small and if you decide to have breakfast late you might need to wait for a table to be freed.

Wi-Fi was available in the garden/outdoor pool/restuarant area but not in my room and also the 5 star spa resort does not have a parking facility. The options therefore is to try and park outside the hotel, which in Sliema is very difficult to do, or use a shopping mall parking just across the road. The Spa and restuarant desks will stamp your leaving parking ticket so you don't have to pay but the front desk will not so i am not sure if you have to stay going to the spa and restuarant everytime asking for your ticket to be stamped if you are staying for a week at the hotel and you have rented a car.

Overall I think this hotel was very nice and comfortable but some of its personel still need to learn a bit on how to go along their customers. So far I would give this hotel a 4 or 4.5 star rather than a 5 star. I've been to other 5 stars on this island and the level was much higher, but then again i stayed in the normal room and not in the spa and wellness rooms that this hotel offers with spa facilities in your own room!
