“A 3-star hotel in a great location in Sliema”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 24, 2010

The Park Hotel is a 3-star hotel in a good location in a nice part of Malta. If you keep that in mind, you'll be fine, but if you expect 4-stars and all that that implies you will be disappointed.
The decor of the hotel, both in public areas and in the rooms was dated. It opened 20 years ago and the style refects that, for example the curtains appear original.

Pluses:
Our room, sheets and towels were clean.
The room was a decent size and we had a glimpse of the sea from our window.
The bathroom has been recently re-decorated (stylish modern beige tiles on the walls, the white bath looks new, as are the toilet and sink, and the counter is solid oak (although starting to be ruined by the water that gets splashed on it), except for some reason they left in the original (yellowing) hairdryers.
The room heating (we came in winter) worked fine.
The shower was hot and powerful whenever we used it, which are essential for a good shower.
There was plenty of hanging space for clothes in the closet and storage on the shelves.
Most of the staff were helpful and efficient, and usually (although of course with some exceptions) quite knowledgeable about things like bus routes and ferry times.
The location in Sliema is good: a minute from the seafront, with a good (local) restaurant around the corner, and 10 minutes' walk down a street filled with shops to the Sliema waterfront with ferries to Valletta, sightseeing cruises, and other big-name stores and cafes and restaurants facing the waterfront. It is about a half hour bus ride from Valletta and the bus stop is a few minutes' walk down the street from the hotel. We thought this was perfect even at the end of an evening and would not have wanted to stay further away from Valletta.

Minuses:
Our beds were the usual twins pushed together, and very uncomfortable. They were the worst part of our stay.
The bathroom was quite small - two people was a bit of a crowd and because of this, I could not imagine wanting to have a soak in the bathtub. (The bathtub was a normal size, it's just that the bathroom was small--not a place to relax)
As is fairly common in hotel bathrooms there wasn't enough space for wet towels, and since they want us to re-use them for environmental reasons, it would be good to have at least a second towel bar so they could actually dry out.
Tea and coffee are not provided in the rooms, only the kettles and cups.
There is a charge of 7 euros to use the safe deposit box in your room.
The "high speed internet" worked ok, but there is always a lag of a couple of seconds whenever you do something (nowadays, a second is an eternity for computers!) and there is a charge (although fairly cheap) to use it. They are 2 computers off to one corner of the lobby, which sometimes means waiting for somebody to get off.
The restaurant (where the breakfast buffet is) could use some changes, particularly with the yellow curtains on the street-side windows. It doesn't help that they need ironing and are sagging where they haven't been adjusted properly.
The roof-top outdoor pool was closed for the winter, but the indoor pool in the lower level was open, however the chlorine smell was overpowering--strong enough to come up to the lobby at times if the door was left open. We didn't use it, but we did see some others do.
The "gym" is a few exercise machines near the pool and hot tub, which I think wouldn't be very nice for either the swimmers or the exercisers.

Breakfast was a full English, but without any potatoes, and it never changed. There were sausages, bacon, toast, baked beans, eggs, several other choices of sliced bread and rolls with jam and butter and cheese, 3 kinds of cereal, some fruits, tea, coffee, and hot chocolate (from a machine) and watery fruit juices (also from a machine). None of the drinks were very good.

For us, the hotel was absolutely fine, and we would recommend it to anyone else who is happy with a 3-star hotel. Of all of the minuses, the only one that really mattered was the beds. I didn't like the breakfast, but that's personal taste--others were quite happy to pile it on. The other minuses were, at worst, only slightly annoying or cosmetic. We found it clean and decent and all that we expected from a hotel and we'd happily stay there again.

The Park hotel, which is situated up a side street just off Tower road was a very pleasant surprise to me,considering I read a couple of rather negative reviews. The room I was allocated was on the 4th floor which was ideal as I requested a room on a high floor.
My room was clean, spacious and bright.A large twin bed and satellite T.V. were a welcome sight.A previous reviewer only received 2 English speaking channels,
I received 4 which was adequate as I was'nt there to watch television.
The en-suite facilities were very good. The kettle, which was provided for coffee/tea making(you have to provide your own tea/coffee,milk and sugar)had seen better days, but after a good few rinses out,the lime-scale was removed. The chamber maids were very efficient, and if you needed anything, they were very helpful.
The restaurant was very clean and tidy and was always well manned at meal times.
The food at breakfast and dinner was adequate to say the least.
All in all,I had a very enjoyable stay at the Park hotel and would definitely stay there again.

My wife and I have just returned from a week at this hotel, and our experience is very different from what is shown and described on both this, and their own web site.
The hotel staff were in the main extremely good, and prior to our arrival handled all my inquiries (via e-mail) efficiently and promptly. The bedroom was roomy, with an on-suite bathroom, and a small balcony overlooking the street. The room was cleaned daily, towels replaced, and the bed linen was of a respectable standard. The television was very poor with the majority of the channels unavailable due to "CHILD LOCK". Only 2 channels were in English. Their web site spoke of "room refreshment facilities" and this turned out to be a kettle, 2 saucers, and one cup! We purchased tea-bags and milk from a local supermarket).
The pipe to the shower head was twisted and broken so the shower was very poor, and on 3 days of our stay the water was only lukewarm. When we arrived the bathroom contained 1 sachet of bath foam, and 3 of shampoo. These were not replenished until day 5 of our stay, by when we had purchased our own.
The brochure stated a heated indoor pool, and a gym. When we went to the pool, it was in darkness and we had to find our own way to light switches to illuminate the area. The pool, if heated, was to a very cool level, and far too cold for us to use. The gym had chains through the handles of the entrance doors, and was padlocked shut. The view through the doors certainly does not match the photographs on the web site.
The lifts frequently did not work properly and doors would open and close 2, 3, or 4 timed before the lift would start to operate. The hotel lounge bar was only open one evening of our stay and to get a drink you went to the dinning room when a waiter would come to the bar to serve you. The dining room itself was a great weakness as the chef displayed no imagination about his food or the menu. We ate in the hotel twice during our stay, and the vegetables were cold on both occasions. Breakfast was adequate but not exciting.
Their web site spoke of entertainment 4 nights per week, but this consisted of a video in the bar lounge most evenings, and a musician with an electric keyboard reliving the 50's on Saturday.
The staff were always friendly, cheerful, and helpful, and I could not criticise their efforts at all.
It must be said that I do not recognise the premises we stayed in, from the description on either their web sight or that of Trip Advisor, and had I known what the hotel was really like I would not have booked to stay there. I can not recommend this hotel to anyone unless all you are looking for is a clean bed with no other amenities.

I generally think the main issue with Maltese hotels tends to me their star rating system does not match expectations of most travelers, if you however take off one star you get a better idea of what a hotel is really like. This property is based up a small side street but just a few meters from the sea front, so lack of sea views is no big deal, I found the hotel to be very clean and fairly well maintained, my twin room was fairly big with a small balcony and reasonable bathroom, the room looked to have been updated in the last few years, so no complaints at all about my room., the food based on staying bed and breakfast was nothing special, I seldom find hotel food in Malta to be excellent, the breakfast was however eatable.

The Hotel is in a good location on Tower Road, with buses passing the hotel going to a number of locations on the island, the walk down to the main hub of Selma does not take long there you will find plenty of shops, places to eat, boat trips and other temptations, including lots more buses to other places on the island.

great location, staff excellent, clean room, couldn't fault the breakfast. At times the breakfast room was really busy, but the staff did all they could to accommodate us, and their was still plenty of food! The only draw back to Sliema was the busy & noisy roads, but we did choose to stay here rather than somewhere quieter. If you sat at a bar, you had to look beyond the road before you could see the sea! There isn't anywhere to sit very much near the sea front, (especially if you wanted to sit with a drink!)

I booked the hotel through their website based on the above average reviews here on TripAdvisor. However, our stay was far from the great experience others had.

The staff was amazing and friendly and really the best part of the hotel. Our room had a sea view, and even that didn't save it. It was dirty and dated. We were both scared to sit on the beds because the comforters appeared so soiled. The pillows were quite lumpy. The bathroom was clean and somewhat updated (new tile on the walls, new mirror possibly) but the toilet didn't flush.

The location is fairly good, near the sea and main Sliema attractions. We rented a car and had nowhere to park - not even a nearby car park was available. Renting a car in Malta, in fact, is a whole 'nother story (i.e. only do it if your marriage can survive the stress).

The breakfast was atrocious and we left after just one bite. The "juice" had gas, not real fruit juice.

Besides the staff, the other thing they have going for them is that they are quite affordable. I booked directly with the hotel website which I believe is why we got the "sea view" room. If you're desperate for a place to stay in Malta and looking to save a few bucks, this place is fine. Just don't expect greatness here.

Just returned from a weeks stay here and have to say we were a bit apprehensive after seeing some of the other reviews. However, we were pleasently surprised.

The hotel is in a great location, just of the front at Sliema, within a very short walk to the nearest supermarket and kiosk were you can get daily english newspapers.

We were on a half board basis and this would be my main complaint - the food is a bit 'school dinner' like. To be honest we choose to eat out apart from the 1st night. Breakfast is okay but a bit samey. If you choose to miss it, there is snack bar on front, just at the crossing that does excellent toasties, etc and is very reasonable. My other complaint is that the water in the outdoor pool was too cold, although, to be fair, the indoor pool was warm enough to swim in. (did'nt get to try the gym as it was locked for the entire week we were there).

We took a taxi from the airport at a cost of 19euro (use the official taxi kiosk and you won't get ripped off). Similarly, don't pick up a taxi on the street, they charge whatever they feel like. Get the hotel or restuarant to call one, we used wembley taxi's whilst there, very reasonable. We used the local buses a lot - very reasonable and an experience on itself!

All in all we had a great week doing very little!
